Acer Liquid to get software upgrade

We’ve just had confirmation, from a very reliable source, that the Acer Liquid that we reviewed recently will be eligible for an upgrade to Android 2.0!

Although the upgrade is not available just yet we al least know its coming. It will interesting to see which other Android devices get updates in the coming months. With the Android Operating System growing rapidly I think these updates are a must.

The 7.2mm Walkman announced

We’ve reviewed a number of media players from the Sony Walkman range in the past and have always been impressed with them for their sheer sound quality. I was intrigued to see the following press release today where Sony have announced a new model in the Walkman range that’s just 7.2mm thick (or thin).

FALCON_BLACK_small

High-spec WALKMAN® A845 is just 7.2mm thin

  • Ultra-slim (only 7.2mm) and easy to carry
  • Big, bright 7.1cm (2.8″) wide OLED display
  • High quality listening with S-Master Digital Amplifier and Digital Clear Audio technologies
  • Digital Noise cancelling with supplied NC headphones cancels 98.0% (approx.) of ambient noise
  • Enjoy SD video playback on connected Televisions
  • Long audio playback time up to 29 hours
  • New Battery Care mode for extended battery lifespan

Just 7.2mm slim and weighing only 62g (without headphones), the WALKMAN® A845 Video MP3 Player by Sony proves that less really is more. Slipping easily into a back pocket or bag, it’s a great way to keep your favourite music tracks, podcasts and videos with you to enjoy any time.

Despite its chic, slender lines, the thinnest WALKMAN® yet is a true heavyweight when it comes to legendary sound and video quality by Sony.

The player’s front panel is dominated by a big, bright 7.1cm (2.8″) OLED screen. Delivering superb colours, high contrast ratio, wide viewing angle and super-fast response time, it’s a great way to enjoy online movie store downloads, clips from sharing sites, album artwork and digital photos. A new Scene Scroll view lets you browse quickly through longer videos that are displayed as a series of thumbnail images. Find the scene you want, press play and the action picks up at the moment you’re looking for. You can also scroll through cover art images to effortlessly track down the album you want to hear.

Want an even bigger picture? Connect the WALKMAN® A845 to your television via the optional A/V output cable (WMC-NWV10) and enjoy videos on the big screen. Pictures are delivered to your TV set in SD format (720 x 480) at a silk-smooth 30fps frame rate (excludes some DRM content).

As you’d expect from Sony, it’s sheer audio quality that sets the WALKMAN® A845 apart from other MP3 players. S-Master Digital Amplifier technology assures rich, lifelike ultra-low distortion sound. Already featured on Sony hi-fi and home theatre products, S-Master amplification puts you centre-stage in the studio or concert hall while maintaining crisp, clear sound.

Listening is further enhanced with unique Clear Audio technologies from Sony for a dynamic, detail-packed soundstage. Clear Stereo reduces leakage between left and right channels, while Clear Bass delivers powerful, controlled low-end frequencies without distortion. In addition, DSEE Sound Enhancement  Technology ensures smooth, detailed reproduction of high-frequency information that’s typically lost when the original CD-quality music source is compressed as an MP3 file.

Plug in the high-quality 13.5mm EX vertical in-ear headphones and immerse yourself in a blissful world of beautiful WALKMAN® sound without intrusions. Digital Noise Cancelling cuts approximately 98.0%*1 of ambient sound, using advanced processing to detect and filter external noise without impairing audio quality. Three different profile settings let you enjoy optimised noise reduction, whether you’re onboard a plane, bus/train or in the office. With the supplied adaptor, air travellers can connect WALKMAN® directly to the plane’s AV system and enjoy their in-flight entertainment with digital noise cancelling provided by WALKMAN®.

Importing music, video, photos and playlists is quick and fuss-free, with simple drag-and-drop transfer from your PC’s media folder or via iTunes 9.0 using supplied Content Transfer software.  Certain MPEG1 and other downloaded files can be played back on WALKMAN® when converted via Content Transfer. A wide range of major music and video formats are supported, including rights-managed WMA and WMV files.

The WALKMAN® A845 lets you listen for longer, with a generous 29 hours*3 listening time from a single charge. Battery life with video playback is 9 hours*4 – more than enough to keep you entertained on those long journeys. There’s also a new optional Battery Care function that optimises overall battery lifespan by limiting charging levels to 90% of maximum. The home menu can be personalised with a choice of pre-installed wallpaper designs. Alternatively, add an individual touch by choosing your own favourite photo as wallpaper.

The WALKMAN® NWZ-A845 Video MP3 Player with 16GB storage capacity is available from February 2010.

A range of co-ordinated accessories includes the Sony SRS-NWGU50 speaker system: dock your WALKMAN® to enjoy rich, powerful sound at home with deep bass. There’s also a choice of leather (CKL-NWA840) and silicon cases (CKM-NWA840) to protect WALKMAN® from dust and scratches.

Let see if we can get our hands on one of these for review soon!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 goes on sale

It’s been a few months since we first saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 at the launch event but after a few delays, and according to GSMArena, the X2 finally goes on sale.

x2

Well we say it has ‘Gone on Sale’ but other than having a listed price of about £445 (490 euros) we cant find anyone actually selling the X2 as yet and enquiries made to our usual sources have drawn a blank. We’ll keep trying and let you know if we do find a stockist.

We unboxed the X2 and posted our X2 review already but it’s not our favourite device, personally I don’t feel that it’s that significantly different to the X1 despite being a year down the line from the X1. However, judging by some of the questions and comments over on the forum it does look like the X2 is going to be fairly popular. So if you are going to splash your cash on the X2 let us know what attracts you to the handset and once you get your hands on it let us know what you think too!

Google Nexus One preview

A short while ago we let you know that the Google Phone, the Nexus One, would be coming in January and it looks like that day will be with us tomorrow. Google have a launch event in the States tomorrow which will be drawing in plenty of attention.

N1

Google Nexus One

The guys over at engadget have managed to get their hands on the Nexus One and and even have a short video showing its UI.

As I understand it the device will be sold directly by Google sim free and in addition I believe T-Mobile USA will also be supplying the device with a contract.

Although the Nexus One is branded a Google phone they have enlisted the help of HTC to actually manufacture the handset so at least we can be assured of a quality bit of kit.

The device runs Android 2.1 and is sporting a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, a 3.7-inch, 480 x 800 display, has 512MB of ROM, 512MB of RAM, and a 4GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB).

Although the Nexus One doesn’t bring anything revolutionary to the table is does look a nice piece if kit and the new “Live Wallpapers” certainly give it a next generation look.

You can check out the engadget video here and we will be sure to bring you more news as we get it.

Don’t forget to check out our Nexus One unboxing video too!

Nokia N900 not compatible with Three

I first heard this a few days ago and I have to admit that at the time it didn’t fully sink in but for any of you on Three (the UK service provider) that may be thinking about the Nokia N900 as your next phone STOP! The Nokia N900 is currently not compatible with Three.

n900_image_techspecs_device_hardware_315x210

Yes you did just read that correctly, Three SIM cards will NOT work in the Nokia N900 so if you are a Three customer then you are, for the time being at least, out of luck.

I would hope that whatever the problem is it could be rectified with some kind of ROM update for the N900 but until then, if you are on Three then you should avoid the N900!

BlackBerry sales still growing

Research In Motion (RIM) the company that makes BlackBerry smartphones has this week announced its quarter three results and once again the company are still picking up an astounding number of new customers.

BlackBerry Bold 9700

As a recent convert to a BlackBerry I am constantly amazed how popular the handsets are and I’m sure that RIMs position will continue to increase despite the rapid ongoing growth of both the iPhone and the newer Android OS.

Revenue for the third quarter of fiscal 2010 was $3.92 billion, up 11% from $3.53 billion in the previous quarter and up 41% from $2.78 billion in the same quarter of last year. Approximately 4.4 million net new BlackBerry(R) subscriber accounts were added in the quarter. At the end of the quarter, the total BlackBerry subscriber account base was approximately 36 million.

"We are pleased to report record shipments of more than 10 million BlackBerry smartphones during the third quarter with higher than expected revenue, earnings and subscriber growth," said Jim Balsillie, Co-CEO at Research In Motion. "RIM is experiencing a great start to the holiday buying season and the strong Q3 results and Q4 outlook clearly reflect the strength of our diversified product portfolio as well as the success of our efforts to expand into broader customer segments and new geographies while maintaining our strong position in North America."

Nokia N900 coming soon to Vodafone UK – Update

You may have read James’ post the other day – ‘Nokia N900 coming soon to Vodafone UK’ – Well, just a quick update for you…

nokia_n900The Nokia N900

It appears that you can now buy it from the Carphone Warehouse on a monthly contract. However, it seems to be out of stock which is not surprising, but you can still make an order for when they come back in stock.
The Nokia N900 will also be available from Vodafone UK stores from January 2010 (I heard it is the 7th of January but I can’t confirm that).

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness Released

Like most mobile phone manufacturers Sony Ericsson have decided to release a nice novelty based phone just before Chrsitmas.

You may well be asking what the novelty of a phone that will cost around $990 (£676) would be? Well the answer is that the Pureness has the Concierge Service which the Vertu phones have at a fraction of the price. Not only that but it also has a transparent screen which in itself is a huge novelty.

Sony Ericsson Pureness 1 Sony Ericsson Pureness 2
Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness

The name “Pureness” comes from the fact that SE have stripped out all the unnecessary things from both form and function and left only the essential phone functions.

SO what does this little baby have then (apart from the obvious)? Well it has a 1.8″ monochrome display capable of video streaming and viewing and. well that’s really it but on the brightside the Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pureness comes with a 12-month membership to the Pureness concierge service which is available 24/7 via phone or email and it can get you perks like room upgrades in hotels, a VIP welcome, free champagne, discounts, tickets with better seating and so on. Point to note though as the service is country dependent.

Why not have a look at their microsite for some more details?
