Bread, Milk, Eggs, Android Tablet – Asda selling 7” Tablet for £97 (but don’t get too excited)

elonex We all new that Android tablets would eventually become ubiqutous and much cheaper but we didn’t expect both, in one hit and quite so soon.  It seems that well known UK technology retailer er, Asda are now selling a 7″ Android based tablet for an eye-catching £97, the kind of price where it’s going to be an impulse buy.  So is it worth it?  Well.maybe not.

The tablet in question is made by Elonex, one-time UK PC manufacturer and sponsor of Football bad-boys Wimbledon FC, now tech name for licence.  It’s known as the e-touch tablet and it comes with a resistive touchscreen, Android 1.6, 128mb RAM, 2GB Flash Memory, wireless B/G, MicroSD, and frankly not much else to get excited over.  The resistive screen and the low version of Android (with no promise of upgrade) doesn’t bode that well, plus without GPS/compass/3G radio it won’t come with access to the Android Market, limiting apps significantly initially.  It’s also for sale at that other home of technology, Toys R Us along with its 10″ brother (which apparently will have Android 2.1), and we’re going to see more from the likes of DSG retail and er, Next.

Flash Video Now On iOS

skyfire-iphone

Good news folks! You can now watch flash video on an iOS device! And how I hear you ask, by using a brand new browser called Skyfire. As you can expect, Skyfire does not use Flash exactly, because if they did Steve Jobs would kick its ass straight out the door. The way it does it is quite clever, it converts Flash video to HTML5 on their backend so it can be played on iOS devices. Unfortunatly, Skyfire can’t play flash games.

Skyfire should be available on the App Store on Thursday after a wait of over a month for admission into Apple’s walled garden.

Check the demo video out below.

BlackBerry Bold 9780 now showing as coming soon to Orange

Screen shot 2010-10-31 at 13.37.41

With the launch of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 imminent I have just noticed that the device now appears on the Orange website.

As we have said before the 9780 only offers a few additional features over the 9700 but I can see this new version getting me through the next twelve months or so.

Although I would imagine that all the UK carriers will sell the 9780 Orange have one added bonus and that is UMA.

If you don’t have very good coverage at home or at work the BlackBerry will use the internet to deliver all phone calls and data once you are connected to Wi-Fi.  A rather nice feature to have.

We will have a full review of the BlackBerry Bold 9780 very soon so keep your eyes peeled.

Full spec after the break:

Sony’s PSPhone finally a reality?

psphone Off of the back of some worrying news for Sony and mooted takeover talks, it seems the company has finally put the long rumoured Playstation phone into reality.  While many argue that, especially with Sony’s current precarious position, the company should have done years ago, it’s certainly a very interesting prospect.  Whether this is related in any way to the also rumoured PSP2, the so-called “Z-System” appears to at least be Android based, with the prototype currently armed with the 2.1 flavour of the OS and a slide out control pad.  Currently it’s only equipped with digital gaming controls (U,D,L,R and the PS shape quintet) and a set for stop / start and an undefined button from what can be seen, although there could be shoulder buttons lurking underneath.

As this is the first rumours, there is no word on games – will we begin to see Sony’s IPs on the green robot or will the Playstation part run as a separate entity?  Could this even bring a hardware standard to Android gaming, the lack of which is strongly rumoured to be the reason that so few developers have so far released Android versions of their iPhone apps?  Furthermore, would this be killed stone dead if the rumoured Apple buyout were to happen (clue – almost certainly)?  We’ll have to wait and see, but certainly in a world of Android hardware blending into each other, a Playstation phone is certainly an interesting dot on the mobile horizon.

buy blackberry bold 9780

The BlackBerry Bold is essentially an upgrade to the 9700. Memory rises to 512mb, the camera is improved to 5mp and best of all we get the new OS, BlackBerry 6.

Virgin Media to give us 100Mb broadband

virgin_media

Virgin Media have confirmed the roll out of their 100Mb broadband service this year, saying it will be available to 12.7 million homes.

Neil Berkett, Virgin Media’s chief executive officer, humbly described the launch of the service as, "a historic moment." It "will mean the UK will be comparable to other leading broadband nations," he said.

Those who were hoping that the increased downstream speed would mean an equal increase in upstream bandwidth are in for a treat – the company has confirmed that the 100Mb/s service will also feature an impressive 10Mb/s upload rate.
The 100Mb/s service, which replaces the company’s current 50Mb/s connection as its flagship offering, will cost £35 per month when bought as a bundle with telephone and TV offerings, or £45 per month as a stand-alone product.

Interested? You can pre register here.

Being a Virgin media customer myself I have registered my interest. Could come in rather handy for video uploads.

Choose your OS for Venue Pro – Dell to offer WP7 or Android?

Dell-venue-pro In what seems to be a first, Dell are maximising their new Venue Pro phone by offering it in both regular Windows Phone 7 variety and new Android flavour.  Whether this is down to an over production of Venues or the R&D department has been subject to severe cut backs, it’s certainly different to have a choice of operating systems on what looks to be a very attractive handset.  The WP7 flavour is due on November 8th and comes armed with an impressive 4.1″ AMOLED screen with full portrait QWERTY sliding keyboard a la the new Blackberry Torch, plus the requisite 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, 5MP camera and 512mb of memory.  Loaded with WP7 it’s impressive – loaded with Froyo or even the ever near Gingerbread, Dell could have another Google-powered winner to join the Streak.
