The bundled touch screen keyboard of Windows Mobile is rubbish. Sure it does the job with a stylus and its compact but it doesn’t offer much else. There are many alternatives on the market. Up until using this, Resco has provided me with the best experience with it’s imitation iPhone keyboard. Obviously this is tested on a touch screen device. The software is a little pointless otherwise.
The second beta release of Iris Browser for Windows Mobile is now available. This browser from Torch Mobile company has ported open-source “webkit” rendering engine (the same as the one used in Safari and Google Chrome) to Windows Mobile and now they are offering their second beta, available for download right now. They state that it represents their best browser to date. It contains over 100 fixes and improvements since the last beta release, and is incredibly fast and stable.
Technology tracking firm NPD on Monday said iPhones are the mobile handset of choice for US consumers. The report comes on the heels of studies showing that iPhones have taken the place of BlackBerry handsets as second-best selling mobile telephones worldwide and are half as likely to break down as the Research-In-Motion devices. Nokia remains the mobile phone market leader worldwide.
Wmexperts have been sent some screenshots of the upcoming Internet Explorer 6 on 6 mobile browser that should be part of the recently mentioned Windows Mobile 6.5 update. First impressions are not that great, but you can see for yourself with a few screenshots after the break. Not sure if this is going to worry Opera or Skyfire all that much but we can wait and see. It does support Flash Lite so that’s a good positive.
O2 today exclusively unveils the Xda Zest, adding another stylish Xda to its expanding range of O2 branded handsets. On sale ahead of the Christmas period, the O2 Xda Zest is the first O2 Xda to be made available on Pay&Go, as well as on Pay Monthly. We saw last week how the clever bods over at xda-developers had managed to get TouchFlo 3D running on the Xperia X1, well the opposite has happened this week and now we see the Xperia panel interface has been installed on the Touch HD. It is still a proof of concept at the moment but you can follow the thread here to see how it moves forward and there is a video to take a look at too.
We mentioned a while ago that the HTC Touch HD was coming to Orange exclusively until 2009, well it is now available to order from their website. Starting price of the handset is £49.99 all the way up to £299.99 depending on which contract you take out. All the info can be found at the Orange online store here.
Having switched from Windows Mobile to the iPhone nearly one year ago to the day I have been waiting for a device with a similar form factor without all the restrictions and frustrations that an Apple device brings along with it. Sure the iPhone does a fantastic job at making usability simple but with it comes a straight jacketed approach that really frustrates me. Welcome to the HTC Touch HD, can it live up to all the hype, is it really the device that can pull me away from the iPhone 3G and condemn it to my sock draw, read on to find out.
The folks over at Pocketnow have published a rather middling review of the T-Mobile G1. I spent a little time with this phone in the store yesterday and have to admit I felt it was a half baked offering. I may be be spoilt by the features available to a Windows Mobile user. In the months to come I hope the phone will have had several major updates as this is a work in progress.
“In talking about Windows Mobile 6.5, Steve Ballmer did not go in to specifics but did hint at an improvement in the interface and flow of the software. It is believed, however, that this will be the first release to contain the reported Zune software integration instead of the much delayed Windows Mobile 7 release. Though there was no specific date given for Windows Mobile 7, it was believed to be scheduled for as late as the third quarter of 2010, two years away.”
