The next release of Windows Phone is here. The UK and rest of the world will now see the update (codenamed Mango) rolling out to all Windows Phone 7 owners, beginning today, with the aim of all users receiving the update by the end of October. Check ‘where’s my update’ for the latest information on the update. Also take a look at our update guide to make sure you are prepared.

The latest release of Windows Phone brings your contacts, messages and pictures together in one place, making it easy to share life with the people you care about most, keeping you in touch and always up to date.

Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Windows Live Messenger are all right there in the People Hub, so you needn’t worry about how you’ll get in touch. Choose the person to contact, all from one central place.

View a contact, and it summarises all the conversations you’ve had with them, whether it’s phone, text, email or instant messaging – so it’s easy to go back and refresh your memory.

New features

Threads

With Windows Phone your conversations keep flowing. Whether via text, Facebook chat or IM via Windows Live, it’s in one continuous thread for each person or group you chat with. Meaning you never lose track of the conversation.

Groups

Create groups of friends, family or workmates to get in touch with everybody at once – and see what people are up to at a glance. Great for planning things like a birthday party or big night out where you need to keep in contact with a lot of people.

Pinning

Pin your favourite people and groups to the Start screen. You’ll see their latest messages and news right there in the Live Tiles – just tap to get in touch.

Photo tagging

Take a photo in a touch and immediately tag the photo before you share to Facebook or Windows Live, thanks to our new face tagging feature. From pocket to picture to your social network in seconds.

Apps with added intelligence

Forget about apps that wait for you to tap. With Windows Phone there’s less clicking in and out of apps – the information comes to you. Pin apps to your Start screen and they’re alive with animations and updates, bringing you the news headlines, the latest eBay bids or train times – whatever you need to know.

Brand name apps

Windows Phones brings you loads of cool apps from Sky News and The Guardian to British Airways and Tesco. Plenty are free, but even with many of the paid apps you can try before you buy.

Fast web, smart search

Get where you want to go fast with Internet Explorer Mobile on your phone. And with Bing built in, search is instantly more local and more visual so you can spend more time doing and less time looking.

Bing, Bing, Bing!

Bing Local Scout

Looking for something? Wherever you find yourself, Local Scout knows where you are and will bring you local info about places to eat, shops and things to check out – all with the single touch of a button. We search, so you don’t have to.

Bing Music

Wondering what’s the name of that song? Bing Music is built in to Windows Phone. One tap and it’ll tell you what the song’s called, who it’s by, and where to buy it.

Bing Vision

Abroad, and want to know what a sign says – or what’s on the menu? Bing Vision can help. In one touch, scan the text and get a translation.

Bing Voice

Voice search has come to Windows Phone and it’s built right in, so you can go hands free. Search, write and answer texts, make calls – all with just your voice.

When will I get it?

The next version of Windows Phone is rolling out to all Windows Phone owners now. To check to see when you’ll be getting it, go to ‘where’s my update’. And don’t forget to take a look at our ‘how to update your Windows Phone’ guide to make sure it all goes smoothly.
