Are 24 month contracts good value for money?

24

The answer quite simply is no. No 24 month contract, whatever you get with it, is worth being stuck into for two years. I myself have an iPhone 4S 16gb on Three’s One plan and I damn near had a heart attack when I discovered the cost of my contract (including the £99 cost of the phone) is £940 over the two year period. To get the same phone via PAYG with a sim 600 ‘All-you-can-eat data’ plan I’d be £260 better off in my pocket.

For my £35 a month I get All-you-can-eat data, 2,000 minutes, 5,000 Three-to-Three minutes and 5,000 texts. It all sounds okay but if like me you don’t really text or call people and use the internet side of things more you are paying for things you don’t actually want. Also throw in the fact no phone is bullet proof and will start showing signs of failure before the 24 month period is over.

A lot of providers now do sim only options which can either be a one month rolling plan or a twelve month contract. These can offer better value for money and save you being tied to the same phone for such a long period of time.

Below is a comparison of a 24 month and a 12 month contract including a PAYG Blackberry 9320 on the Three network:

Sony announce the Xperia Miro – via Facebook

Xperia Miro 2

The Xperia range just keeps on growing. The Miro is the latest edition and looks to be a budget Android smartphone although at the time of writing this we have no pricing confirmed. Announced today on Facebook, Sony say that the Miro is here although I am pretty certain this will actually be in Q3 2012.

Launching with Android 4.0 on board is going to please many people and with a 800MHz processor this one could well go head to head with the new HTC Desire C?

Let’s hope the price is right.

Thoughts?

Three open up EU data roaming!

Three-logo-web1

At last: From today, Three pay monthly phone customers will be able to enjoy the benefits of the internet on their smartphones whilst holidaying in the EU without the fear of running up a massive bill.

For just a fiver a day, customers can tweet, tag, browse, book, update, upload, search, send, and Google as much as they want without worrying about how much they’re spending.

So, if you’re trying to find that perfect pizzeria, you can just Google it and track it down on a map. If you can’t remember the word for donkey in Spanish, download a translation app. Or, if you really can’t resist finding out what’s going on at work, you can pick up your emails whenever you like and wherever you are. But best of all, you can make everyone back home insanely jealous with loads of gloaty “look where I am right now” type status updates and photos.

Thomas Malleschitz, marketing director at Three said, “We love the mobile internet at Three and we want our customers to enjoy it on holiday as much as they do at home. The Euro Internet Pass gives our customers the freedom to use the internet in the EU without having to think about how many megabytes or gigabytes they are using or where the nearest Wi-Fi hotspot is.

"We’ve been campaigning for lower data roaming rates and welcome the new regulation from Europe. These changes promote competition and allow us to offer our customers a better deal so they no longer have to worry about running up a massive bill when using the internet”.

Fantastic news for Three customers. Happy holidays.

HTC Desire C unboxing and hands on video

htc-desire-c-front-left-white-jpeg_2

HTC once again are in the budget smartphone market but this time with a little beauty.

The HTC Desire C runs Android 4.0 and comes with a price tag of about the £169.99 mark on Pay As You Go. I would imagine that on contract we will see this one at the £10 – £15 per month on a two year deal.

While the Desire C may not have the best specs compared to its brothers in the One Series it is bringing pretty good value to the table. With Sense 4.0 running smoothly, new smartphone users on a budget may well find the Android device of their dreams?

Save money with billmonitor.com

Screen Shot 2012-06-06 at 16.50.53

Fancy saving some money on your mobile bill? Well billmonitor may well just do that for you. Tracyandmatt readers can get free early-access to billmonitor’s unique mobile service, Bill Check-up, before it’s launched commercially to the general public. By analysing your bills every month, Bill Check-up helps you to save money and ensures you get the most from your existing mobile contract. Sounds alright doesn’t it?

Created by Oxford mathematicians and accredited by Ofcom since 2009, billmonitor.com started as a free to use mobile price comparison site.  It analyses your online bills to find out how you use your mobile phone, evaluates all the contract deals in the market and then matches you to exactly the right contract so you pay no more than you should. 76% of the UK is on the wrong contract and billmonitor has already helped thousands of customers switch to the right contract for them.

billmonitor.com have now extended the service to include ‘Bill Check-up’ to help people get the best value throughout the lifetime of their mobile contract, not just when they get a new contract.  Bill Check-up:

· Lets you know whether you’re under-using or over-using your mobile phone contract for minutes, text, and data. It gives advice on how to make the most of your allowances and optimise your current tariff so that you can save money

· Advises on roaming/international/other bundles as needed, based on usage data

· Provides a reminder of how long you have left on your current contract. When you reach 5 or less months to go, billmonitor will match you to alternative contracts suited to your individual usage pattern

billmonitor realises that many people are locked in to contracts and need to know how to use them most effectively. The new Bill Check-up service tells you what changes you can make to your usage and your current tariff to get the most from your existing contract without paying more

Head on over to billmonitor.com and check it out.
