Skype 3.0 Beta for Windows Phones

Skype have just released a 3.0 beta version for Windows Mobile Phones. New in this release is the ability to send spreadsheets, photos, music and other files Skype-to-Skype for free as well as great value texts to mobiles abroad, and a great way to avoid roaming charges abroad if you text on Skype from a WiFi zone. You can download it directly on to your phone and install it straight away, or you can save it to your PC and transfer it on to your Windows® Phone device. AT&T Breaks the E71x, then delays it.

Over the weekend there was a lot of excitement over the fact that this was going to be the week that AT&T would finally start selling Nokia’s masterpiece, the E71x, but alas the news was too good to be true. With today being the scheduled release date, and no E71x in sight qwerty loving S60 fans across the country had their dreams smashed. According to BGR the trouble comes from a bug in the email or exchange synching software. I find this pretty hard to believe, I have been using an unlocked E71 with exchange since Thanksgiving (late November for those of you outside the U.S.) and have never had a problem with synching at all, and on top of that Nokia has sold millions of these phones around the world for nearly a year. If there was a problem with something as vital as email synch, I’m sure someone besides the guys at AT&T would have spotted it by now. While I am disappointed that my fellow countrymen will be denied such a great phone for an extra few weeks, this really questions what AT&T did to this great phone that would break it.

Acer A1 coming September

You gotta love rumors that come across like “This comes from a guy, who knows a guy…“  Such is the case with the Acer Android-based handset rumor.

This one comes via TalkAndroid who found it in The Philippine Business Mirror. An unknown source within Taiwan-based Acer claims that their first Android handset will be known as the A1 and will feature  a full touch screen.  This handset is rumored to be launching in September alongside 3 other phones.

Windows Mobile 6.5 latest build caught on video

We mentioned last week how Microsoft had dropped the honeycomb layout of the new program launcher in Windows Mobile 6.5. Well Brandon over at Pocketnow has flashed up his HTC Touch HD with a new build from xda-developers and sure enough the honeycomb has gone. Also worth mentioning is that the UI is starting to look a little more polished. Take a look for yourself after the break.

AT&T finally ready to sell the Nokia E71, only 9 months late to the party

After nearly a year of availability around the world, AT&T is finally done with its pre-release testing and will begin selling the Nokia E71x this week. A Scheduled release date of March 24th puts America only one day away from the official carrier release of the best business device that has ever come out of Finland. The E71x is basically the same as the E71, and features GPS, HSDPA, a front facing qwerty keyboard in a slim and sexy package. At $200 dollars this is a little pricey, but if you are in the market for a business device and don’t want a Blackberry, this is the phone for you. Let’s just hope AT&T didn’t cripple all the great features.

Telefónica and Vodafone announce milestone pan European collaboration

Telefónica and Vodafone, two of the world’s largest telecommunications operators, today announce a wide-ranging strategic programme to share mobile network assets across selected European operations.

As part of the collaboration, Telefónica and Vodafone are actively exploring opportunities to cooperate in related areas such as the provision of transmission services.

Telefónica and Vodafone will use the agreements to aid the roll out of their respective networks, enhancing service quality for customers in the longer term. The agreements will also reduce the environmental impact of both companies’ roll out activities, due to the consolidation of existing sites and joint build of new sites.

Windows Mobile 6.5 on a Treo 750

Just spotted this story over at wmexperts and as this device was and still is for that matter my favourite Windows Mobile device it is worth sharing. The video is not the best quality and for some reason it is filmed with the phone on its side so its quite hard to watch. There is also a thread over at xda you can follow too, but you can see it for yourself after the break.

Sony Ericsson sales drop by almost half in one quarter

Sony Ericsson, the world’s 4th biggest handset maker, has reported a titanic sales decrease of almost 50% in just a few months. This is a bad thing, you see.

Reuters slapped a scary headline on this story, but it couldn’t really be described as sensational. As much a terrifying portent of electronics companies’ coming year as it is an indicator of the company’s especially sorry state, this announcement is particularly gruesome when you consider that, unlike Palm, they don’t even have an escape plan in place, or even a substantive Smartphone line—one of the few areas that is expected

New Youtube client for Windows Mobiles and Symbian S60

Google have released a new dedicated Youtube client for Windows Mobile and the S60 platform. While the YouTube blog only said that the new Windows Mobile client is available now, it had forgotten to mention that – at the moment – it’s only available in English for Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK and USA. Thanks to the language detection if you try to download the client from another country, the download page says that the download isn’t available for your smartphone. Nevertheless, instead of pointing Internet Explorer Mobile to http://m.youtube.com go to http://m.google.com/youtube/download?hl=en allows to download the YouTube client from anywhere. Furthermore it’s recommended to use Internet Explorer Mobile instead of Opera Mobile (if installed) to download the app.
