At the 3GSM event in Macau, TheMedicalPhone showed off a new flip device, the iCEPhone, which extended outwards not once, but twice. The device has a gaming style keypad and a full QWERTY keyboard, as well as a three inch touchscreen to boot, so even if you accidentally break one interface, there’s always another to back you up on this WinMo-powered handset. This bizarre device was designed with the emergency services in mind, which is shown by the presence of a key that automatically sends GPS and other info to local emergency services. The iCEPhone will cost around $1,000 (£667) when released in Q2 2009, although there’s no word of when or if it will be released in Britain.

We posted a while ago about the Touch Diamond and Pro having an area just below the screen that is capacitive and can support multi-touch, well at last we have a commercial application that can take advantage of this, GSCroll by mobile src allows you to swipe your finger left/right/up/down on the touch panel to scroll or navigate. This functionality will work in any Windows Mobile application that supports scrolling or navigation via the directional pad. More details and download links after the break.
Over at WMExperts (and elsewhere), a mystery smartphone photo has popped up and it’s giving us a definite Palm feel. The keyboard matches the layout of the Centro and Treo Pro nearly perfectly, the only difference being the location of the , -, and * buttons. The keyboard also looks to have the Centro/Treo rubberized feel as well. This definitely looks like a Palm device. More after the break.
We posted a story last week about a phone coming out of China that can run Windows Mobile or Android, well now we have a video of it in action running Android. Its over 9 minutes long though but shows you the OS in a very detailed way although it is silent so no translations necessary. Video after the break.
The guys over at Phonescoop have grabbed a look at the Nokia N97 and posted a video so we can all enjoy it. This new Nokia handset looks pretty nice and the specs also seem reasonably good too, take a look at the video after the break and see it in action, this may be a phone a lot of people will want to get their hands on.
HTC have released a bug fix for the Touch HD, apparently sometimes the screen stops responding for about 3 to 5 seconds when running an application that needs to use the stylus to click the screen repeatedly within a short time. For example, the windows built-in software like SMS, email, solitaire, etc. If you are experiencing this problem you should install the hotfix but only if your Rom version is less than 1.19. You can find all the information here.
Moneysupermarket.com have asked over 2000 UK citizens about their mobile internet experiences and got a resounding thumbs down. Nearly three quarters of users have internet capabilities on their phones, less than a quarter actually use it. Cost and speed were big issues, with 70 percent saying they had no idea how much it would cost and 24 per cent reporting that mobile surfing was too slow. One in eight actually called mobile internet ‘pointless’.
There is no application as yet to allow you to watch any content from the BBC’s iPlayer website it is not a problem. If you actually visit the website within the iPhones Safari browser you can actually watch all the content without a problem. The videos on the iPlayer site, when selected, open up and play through the iPhones inbuilt Quicktime video player. It works really well and the quality is great too. You have to be in the UK though to enjoy it due to licensing. Video of it in action after the break.
As you are no doubt aware the iPhone cannot be used in landscape mode to compose emails which is another strange quirk that we are waiting for Apple to address. Until that time we have seen various applications that can help. One such application is Wide Email which gives you this functionality but more importantly also gives you short cuts for well used phrases or words. For example I can program the letters mta and the keyboard will automatically type Mobile Tech Addicts. Take a look at the video after the break to see how well this application works.
Q3 2008 saw Apple’s only current smartphone, the iPhone 3G, outsell the numerous devices based on the Windows Mobile platform not only in the USA but on a worldwide scale. Despite the global financial crisis the smartphone market share is still growing (though at a slower pace than last year) and territories are being remapped. The third quarter of 2008 saw some really interesting changes in position.
