Asus might be building the Nexus tablet

AsusEeePadTransformer-550x475So fresh off of the press is a new rumour which Android and Me are reporting on regarding the rumoured Google’s 7-inch Nexus Tablet that would be selling for $199 when it is released, if it actually exists. According to two reliable sources that Android and Me spoke with at MWC 2012, Asus will be the company building the device.

Asus has seen quite the success with the Transformer and Transformer Prime line-up of tablets. We really are not surprised if the rumour is true regarding Asus being the company that will build this Nexus Tablet. Other information about this tablet, which is also rumoured to be coming Q2 2012, is that it will sport a Tegra 3 quad-core chipset which is not really surprising at all. Nexus devices have always been the flagship of Android so stuffing as much good hardware into one is essential.

Reports of the tablet, which will be 7-inches and running at a resolution of 1280×800, is apparently going into production in April with a shipping date of June. As Android and Me points out, we could see these handed out at Google I/O this year which would also make sense. There is also a rumoured name for this tablet, the Google Play. This comes from the fact that MarkMonitor, a service Google uses regularly for domains, has registered a bunch of domains with that name in it. The full list of domains, provided by Fusible, are:

appsonplay.com
booksonplay.com
gamesonplay.com
googleplayapps.com
googleplaybooks.com
googleplaydownloads.com
googleplaygames.com
googleplaymagazines.com
googleplaymovies.com
googleplaymusic.com
googleplaynewspapers.com
googleplaynewsstand.com
googleplaytv.com
googleplayvideos.com
magazinesonplay.com
moviesonplay.com
newspapersonplay.com
tvonplay.com

The idea of a $199 quad-core full featured Android tablet flying the Nexus flag is a delicious one indeed. Android and Me also speculates that a 10" $299 model could be in the works as well but even if it isn’t, a 7" tablet of this calibre and price range should sell well. Of course this all has to come true first.
