Have HTC teamed up with Sharp?

_63566955_htc

Could The HTC J Butterfly phone be the next offering from the Taiwanese company? The word on the street is that HTC have teamed up with Sharp to offer a device with a 5 inch display with an industry-leading 440 pixels per inch – blimey! The Android device is allegedly going on sale in Japan in December this year.

HTC’s 440ppi – pixels per inch – resolution offers a performance-boost over rival flagship devices including Samsung’s similarly-sized Galaxy Note 2 with a 267ppi screen. Apple’s iPhone 5 offers 326ppi, Nokia’s upcoming Lumia 920 332ppi and LG’s Optimus G 318ppi. To support the facility, HTC has included Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.

Clearly we have no news regarding the device from HTC UK so whether it will grace our shores is still yet to be announced.

Asus Padfone 2

asus-padfone-2-full-plus-multi-phone-viewJust a few scant months after their first iteration, Asus officially announces the PadFone 2. We knew it was coming. There was too much leaked info over the past few months for any other outcome. Now the Padfone 2 is official and it really looks like Asus is trying to perfect this beast. (For those who missed this, the Padfone 2 is an Android Smartphone & Android Tablet Docking Hybrid.)
Could they have finally found the right formula, and is the time ripe for a combo product like this one? The specs are quite amazing actually, but only time, and sales numbers, will provide the answer. Here’s the breakdown on the new device, followed by a press release below.

Microsoft Surface has a price and pre-order

Surface-Black-Cover-Front-nbg_PageEarlier today Microsoft announced pricing, market availability and pre-order for their “Surface” – the tablet PC designed to be the ultimate stage for Windows. Announced some months ago there has been much speculation regarding the price and specs. Speculate no more, as all is made clear. This pricing is for the Surface with Windows RT, coming pre-installed with Office Home and Student 2013 RT Preview.

Surface with Windows 8 Pro pricing is still a mystery at this stage however, it’ll likely be more than the Windows RT version as the specifications have been beefed up to run the full version of Windows 8. The specs are quoted after the break.

Highlights:

· Originally unveiled in June, Surface with Windows RT will be available starting at £399.

· Touch Cover will be available in three colours-black, white and cyan- priced at £99.99 so customers can express their personal style. Customers will also have the option to purchase a Type Cover in black for £109.99, which adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.

· Customers can visit www.Surface.com to pre-order now in eight markets across the world: Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom and the United States. Pricing varies by geography.

Google Nexus 7 becomes the best selling tablet at Carphone Warehouse

nexus-7_2

Carphone Warehouse has announced that, since going on sale on 27th July, the Google Nexus 7 inch tablet has become the highest selling Android tablet in the history of the category.

The UK’s largest independent mobile retailer has seen a huge demand for this smaller sized tablet running on the Android 4.1, Jelly Bean operating system.
Graham Stapleton, Chief Commercial Officer at Carphone Warehouse, says, “Looking at the sales of the Google Nexus tablet, it’s clear that there is a massive demand amongst our customer base for smaller tablets. We’re seeing a real shift in what customers are using their tablets for, with more and more watching content on the go. It’s now common to see people using their tablets during the morning commute or catching up on the day’s news in a local coffee shop, and smaller devices make it easier to handle.
“We’ve seen that 59% of total tablet sales in our stores are sold as either connected or tethered, to allow access to the internet on tablets that don’t have inbuilt 3G connectivity.  At Carphone Warehouse, we offer a wide range of tablet and phone packages, so are well placed to offer the best tariff for each and every customer.
“It’s impressive that this product is our biggest selling Android tablet, and it will be really interesting to see if other manufacturers will follow suit with smaller tablets over the coming months to spice up the Christmas period.”

Frankly, I am not surprised at this news. Not only a great tablet but I had super customer service from CPW when I purchased mine there.

Archos GamePad video debut

ScreenClipWe have recently been treated to an exciting collection of videos for Archos’ new GamePad, a 7" tablet that favours gaming over all else. Running Ice Cream Sandwich and a fairly ingenious method of binding hardware keys to on screen functions Archos are taking steps into untested waters with this device that is likely to shift a good few units, especially at the proposed price of less than ?150! The idea of having hardware buttons rather than relying on Touchscreen will obviously be attractive to many.

It’s got a 1024×600 capacitive touch screen but more importantly for gaming, it’s got game controller buttons on each side of the screen. This device runs on the Rockchip RK3066 dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with the quad-core Mali-400MP4 GPU.

Of course No. 1 Archos Fanboy Charbax got a bit of time with it. You can see the videos below:

Russian LG Nexus review appears online

LG-E960 Nexus 4 Android new 1It would appear that Russian site Onliner.by has managed to somehow get a hold of one and has done a full review of what is now known as the LG Nexus 4.

Unfortunately the entire site is in Russia and so with the help of Google Translate, we are able to read most of this review. The review is of a prototype version of the LG Nexus 4 so the reviewer suffered from some initial problems with the device. The device is 134 × 69,2 × 9,2 mm, weighs 139g making it smaller than the Galaxy Nexus. Other remarks include no pogo pins for accessories, there is a multi-colored LED notification, micro SIM slot is on the left side, the back completely smooth and glossy, and the sides of the device are made from a matte black rubberized plastic. Most of this could be speculation from the rumour mill and unconfirmed pictures.

O2 apologize for UK outage

o2logo

Around 10% of the firm’s 23 million customers are believed to have been affected by the yesterday’s outage problem, with O2 admitting people in some areas had been unable to make or receive calls, texts or access data services.

Last night, an O2 spokesperson told Sky News: "Further to our previous update where some customers in some areas were unable to make or receive calls, send texts or use data, service has been fully restored for all remaining impacted customers.

"Once again we’re are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused."

Asked about whether any compensation would be offered, the spokesperson said: ”Our first priority was to get customers back up and in service. We’ll now need to conduct a full investigation into the cause of the problem.”
