HTC Tattoo unboxing video

A little over a month ago HTC announced that they would soon launch another Google Android powered handset called the HTC Tattoo. Surprisingly soon after that announcement HTC have launched the Tattoo and we’ve just managed to get our hands on one for review.

The HTC Tattoo The HTC Tattoo (back)

The HTC Tattoo

The HTC Tattoo is the smallest Android powered handset to be released so far and possibly one of the cheaper ones too. Unlike all the other Android handsets this one has only a QVGA (240×320) display versus the HVGA (320×480) found on the others. This makes for a much smaller, compact and lightweight handset. I’ve only used it briefly today but I have to say that my initial opinion is that it’s a really nice looking handset and I like the design of the back, much more interesting than the usual black or silver.

So we’ll be reviewing the HTC Tattoo over the next week or so and will have the review online for you as soon as we can. For now, have a look at the unboxing video below to see the handset in a little more detail. Note that although the box isn’t the full retail package the handset itself is full and final.

HTC HD2 – You may want to put this date in your diary!

Our good friends at Clove have told us of a rather special date we should all remember. Wednesday 11th November sees the release date of the HTC HD2!

7

HTC HD2

Fingers crossed HTC can deliver on time as this is one device I have been eager to get my hands on for a while now.

If you are not aware of the spec of the device here’s a quick rundown on the best bits:

  • Windows Mobile 6.5
  • Sense UI
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 1 GHz Processor
  • 480×800 Capacitive Display
  • Multi Touch Support
  • Accelerometer
  • 448 MB Ram
  • 512 MB Rom
  • HSDPA
  • Wi-Fi
  • 5MP Camera with autofocus and LED Flash
  • HTC Peep/HTC Footprints
  • 3.5mm Headphone Jack

If you have not seen the size of the handset be warned, it’s a beast!

55

HD2 Dimensions

The HD2 is pretty much the same size as the Toshiba TG10 (although HD2 has a slightly bigger screen) which Orange have been selling here in the UK for a while now. The HD2, in my opinion, will run smoother than the TG01 which was launched with WinMo 6.1 but is eligible for the 6.5 rom upgrade.

If you are thinking of getting the HD2 then SuperEtrader have got a great deal on at the moment with some accessories thrown in for free. Click here to see the page.  Devicewire have also got the HD2 coming on the 11th. You get get it from them for ONLY £499.00!

As soon as we can get our hands on the HD2 we will have an unboxing video followed by the full review. Now, as I have a slight suspicion that the review may be quite popular we are offering followers of our forum the opportunity to send us there HD2 questions in advance. This way I can answer them in the review or if I cant answer I will “phone a friend”.

So please feel free to either post your questions here or alternatively you can post them under the HTC HD2 unboxing video coming soon.

Palm: A brief history

a-brief-history-of-palm-0 (1)

When a work colleague said to me “This new company Palm seem to have a nice looking phone coming out on O2” I was pretty taken aback. However, thinking about it now, why would someone who has used dumb phones, like lower end Nokia’s and Sony Ericsson phones, all their lives know the Palm brand. It’s essentially business users and most, when seeing one in a business users hand probably assumed it was a Blackberry.

To help update the masses pocket-link has written an excellent retrospective of Palm over the last 13 years. Well worth the read!

Back in 1996 a small division of US Robotics came up with a personal digital assistant portable pad that ran a touchscreen controlled OS on 128KB memory and just a serial port for connecting it to the rest of the world. So was invented the Palm 1000 – the very first PalmPilot. Continues here.

New Blackberrys on the way

This week has has seen not one but two bits of great news for Blackberry fans.

The first is that the Blackberry Storm2 is now official and coming to Vodafone here in the UK.

Storm2

Storm2

The specs are without doubt better than the original Storm with the inclusion of Wi-Fi (Yay!). Kevin over at crackberry.com has done a fantastic review of the Storm2, so rather than me waffling on about something I’m not an expert on click here to see his review.

The second piece of news is that the Blackberry Bold2 (9700) may be with us sooner than we thought.

Bold2

T-Mobile Bold2

T-Mobile in Germany have stated that the Bold 9700 will be with them in November. The Bold 9700, which had the codename of Onyx, is the same size as the current Blackberry Curve 8900. Unlike the Curve though it has 3G/HSDPA which I really missed when using a Curve. Also, gone is the trackball. Its been replaced by the trackpad we mentioned recently when we reviewed the Curve 8520. Along with all the other features you would expect with a Blackberry I think this one is going to be massive for RIM and keep there growth on the upward slope.

Hopefully we will have both these devices to review in due course so keep your eye peeled for further news.

Samsung H1 on Vodafone 360

9a5baf76850dd7e5c3972cc988035116

O2 launched the Palm Pre today so Vodafone counter attacked with … the Samsung H1. This is the first of two phones set to appear featuring the LiMO OS, a Linux based operating system. We discussed this phone in a recent podcast and it really seems to cut it as far as features go, however with most awaiting tariff info on the iPhone on Orange and Vodafone and heavy competition from the Palm Pre we think this little device is going to have a rough time. Read on for the specs.

Palm Pre now available to buy in the UK

As from today, the 16th October, you can buy a Palm Pre from O2 if you want to.

Pre

Palm Pre

At the moment the only way to get a “free” Pre is to sign up to a 24 month contract or pay £44.05 per month. That’s a lot of money to pay each month unless you will actually use the 1200 minutes you will get. Of course, with all the deals, you will get unlimited web and Wi-Fi, that you would certainly need as the new Web OS is permanently connected to the internet.

There are five different packages available, four on 18 month contracts and one on the 24 month.

It will be very interesting so see how Pre sales go, as I feel that a lot of people are currently waiting to see what Orange and Vodafone have to offer price wise with the iPhone 3GS.

Ronan Dunne, CEO of Telefonica O2 UK said “Today’s announcement reinforces O2’s position as the home of the smartphone. With the addition of the excellent Palm Pre to our already extensive portfolio, we will continue to offer our customers the widest range of the very best devices on the market today.”
“There’s a lot of excitement about Palm Pre in Europe as we continue to expand Palm webOS products across new carriers and countries,” said Jon Rubinstein chairman and chief executive officer, Palm, Inc. “We look forward to launching Palm Pre with O2 so people in the UK can see firsthand how Palm webOS offers a new and better smartphone experience.”

Apple shipping iPhone 3GS’ resistant to jailbreaking?

jailbreak_iphone_vterm2

To be perfectly honest we’re surprised it took this long. Reports are surfacing that Apple is now shipping a new bootrom with the iPhone 3GS that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit used by the Dev-Team and others to jailbreak the iPhone. DevTeam member MuscleNerd confirms that the bootrom update, dubbed iBoot-359.3.2, would make jailbreaking new iPhone’s “impossible” for the time being. Man, does Apple hate when people muck with the iPhone or what! Your move Dev Team — and godspeed. Or maybe our ninja GeoHot can find a way around it? We’ll see!

TCPJ iPhone app

We don’t normally cover apps on the blog however I am making an exception as this one was created by a friend of mine and he is rather well known in the mobile phone industry as he has the number one mobile podcast on iTunes!

tcpj

The Cell Phone Junkie

Mickey Papillon who runs thecellphonejunckie.com in the USA has created a great iPhone app for listeners of his podcasts. Mickey and his buddy Joey have two separate podcasts. The first being a free weekly show dedicated to recent mobile news in the States and also its a chance for Mickey and Joey to answer any questions that have been emailed in by followers of the show .The second podcast, TCPJ unlocked, is a fortnightly show where they tend to focus on one particular subject and often have guest on the show. Although I am not in the USA I still find both podcasts very interesting and informative.

The app which can be found in the iTunes apps store gives users a direct link from there iPhone not only to download the podcasts but also some bonus material as well. PDF documents – show notes and bonus audio content can be viewed/listened to. In addition you can follow the shows Twitter feed, email the show and hear call-in audio comments.

For £1.19 if you use an iPhone and want to listen to thecellphonejunkie this app is a must and a great idea.

Good job Mickey!

To find the app just enter tcpj into the search box in iTunes.
