Mozilla Fennec Alpha on video

image

Brandon over at Pocketnow has put together a video of Mozilla’s upcoming mobile browser currently known as Fennec. As this will be the mobile version of Firefox its pretty exciting to see what they have in store after the huge success of the desktop version. In the video, they give you a tour of Mozilla Fennec Alpha running on an HTC Touch Pro. Although the program is totally unstable and difficult to use, you get some glimpses of what Mozilla has in store for its upcoming mobile browser, which brings several elements of Firefox 3 to handheld devices.

Microsoft files patent application, combines smartphone and desktop

Microsoft has new invention idea and filed a patent application for a device that bridges the gap between your desktop computer and your mobile phone. The device is essentially a microsoft-smart-interface-systemsmall  computer with its own CPU and OS, but when docked with a compatible mobile phone it can create a powerful computing platform, that can interface with a number of peripherals, including keyboard, mouse, monitor and others. The Patent Application titled “SMART INTERFACE SYSTEM FOR MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS DEVICES” sounds like a beefed up version of the Redfly desktop Smartphone Terminal that Celio was showing off at CES a couple of weeks ago.

This seems like a natural progression for computing as our mobile phones become more and more powerful. Just as laptops started out as lumbering expensive supplements to desktop computers, but now a laptop can replace a desktop in terms of cost, and speed. It’s easy to foresee a time when smartphones can also bridge that gap. Maybe this device will help herald in a new era of computing, one which a lot of us in the tech community have been waiting for for a long time.

Orange launch UKs first PAYG Blackberry

Until now, if you wanted a Blackberry device you had to have a pay-monthly account and have a Blackberry subscription. Orange are about to change that though as from February they will be offering the Blackberry Pearl for just £145 with their Blackberry Internet Service for just £5.

Orange today announced it will be bringing the BlackBerry® Pearl™ 8120 to its Pay As You Go (PAYG) customers. The smartphone, which provides exceptional phone; email, messaging, organiser, web browser and multimedia capabilities, will be priced at £145, with customers now able to take out a BlackBerry® Internet Service that provides email, messaging and web access whilst on the move. The new offering comes as a result of the growing demand for a BlackBerry® smartphone with PAYG service.

With a quick set up, the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 connects customers to Facebook®, MySpace®, Flickr™ and Windows Live Messenger (MSN® Instant Messenger), meaning you’ll never miss out on a friend’s update or party invitation. Webmail users are also catered for, with easy access to Hotmail®, Yahoo!® Mail and Gmail®.

To take advantage of the Orange PAYG BlackBerry smartphone offer, customers must first purchase the BlackBerry Pearl 8120 for £145, which is exclusive to Orange in indigo. They can then choose one of Orange’s existing PAYG Animal packages, offering a choice of free rewards before taking out Orange’s PAYG BlackBerry Internet Service for just £5 per month, on a monthly rolling subscription.

The BlackBerry Pearl 8120, combines chic styling with full BlackBerry smartphone functionality. Features include a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth®, Wi-Fi® and  media player (MP3, video, etc.); it’s designed to help you do everything you want with your life.

Pippa Dunn, Director of Pay As You Go, Orange UK said, “With nearly two thirds of UK mobile customers now using pay as you go , we are really pleased to be bringing  one of the most popular email  and multimedia devices to the masses as the first operator to offer BlackBerry on pay as you go in the UK . At Orange, we’ve always been known for innovation and great value, and with the launch of this service, we continue to lead the market – giving UK pay as you go customers the choice they deserve.”

3D phone coming to Japan

image Japanese operator KDDI has unveiled a phone with a 3D display. The recently announced Ketai H001 has a 3.1in hinged screen – made by Hitachi, and named after its HD TV brand, Wooo – that’s able to display games, pictures and video content in 3D. A 3D button on the phone takes the user through to a dedicated channel which streams 3D content to the phone over an integrated 1Seg receiver. The rest of the phone’s features are pretty high spec too. It has a 5Mp camera with autofocus. Images are stored on Micro SD cards. E-Wallet support lets the owner pay for things using the H001, and the clamshell’s top surface is a display in its own right. The 51 x 111 x 18.6mm device is available in “Flame Red”, “Solid Silver” and “Neon Purple” body colours. A UK launch date or price, no chance this will be a Japanese only release, Boooo!!!!

More Windows Mobile 6.5 screenshots

image

The guys over at XDA-Developers have posted up a few more screenshots of the soon to be announced Windows Mobile 6.5. The pictures on the left are the new Internet Explorer 6 and you can see the new zoom bar and the other pictures are of the new home screen and launcher honeycomb layout. Not sure if this is just a today screen enhancement / overlay or something deeper like a new programs menu, guess time will tell.

Dream G200i Phone Runs Real Google Android

dream_g200i_google_android

Is this the first Android phone in the market. The Dream G200i is a 2.8-inch phone with Smart Touch display, Bluetooth, 4 MP camera, support for video and music files and runs an OS dubbed Google Androidoperation system. It doesn’t look like a straight clone of the T-Mobile G1, so we’ll have to file this one under MotoROKR E7 knock-off. No WiFi, 3G connectivity or GPS. The Dream G200i, however, is a full-pledged business phone with support for  “Google Mobile functions of Google Search, Google Maps, Gmail, Google SMS, Blogger, Google Calendar, Picasa Web Albums, Google Notebook, Google Reader, Google Docs, Google News & iGoogle!” It also supports MS Office and a host of IM software’s. Discounted price tag is $235 here.

General Mobile DSTL1 could be the First dual-SIM Android Phone

general-mobile-dstl1-3

Though we have heard a lot of promises from other manufacturers, we have yet to see another Android phone become available apart from the T-Mobile G1. Well, that may soon change if General Mobile keeps their promise and debuts the DSTL1 Imaginary at the World Mobile Congress next month. Aside from running Android, the DSTL1 also features dual-SIM capabilities making it the first dual-SIM Android phone. It’s equipped with a 624MHz Marvell processor, 3-inch display, 5-megapixel camera with autofocus, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP and EDR, FM radio, microSD card support, and 4GB of internal memory. It’s a pretty decent spec sheet to me, but the big question is; can they deliver the good on time? Granted that the World Mobile Congress is just a couple of weeks away, we’ll probably know sooner than later.
