Windows Phone 7 Companion – Book Review

DSCF1008

I am not really a book reader and reviewing them isn’t really my thing but I was talking to a friend of mine recently who has written one and I thought it may be worth a read. Windows Phone 7 Companion has been written by Matthew Miller. If the name doesn’t ring a bell then still you may of read his previous work. Matt not only writes for ZDNet.com but also runs nokiaexperts.com which is part of the Smartphone Experts group of websites.

I have been using Windows Phone 7 since launch and although I am pretty up to speed with the new operating system I thought that by reading the book I am bound to find out things that I didn’t know. And I was right.

With the recent news that Nokia will be using Windows Phone 7 as their primary OS in the future the WP7 market share is due to rocket. This means millions and millions of people will be getting a phone with a brand new operating system to them. For many people this is a daunting experience and maybe even a bit scary. This is where Windows Phone 7 Companion may well come in handy. What better than to have one place where you can discover all the benefits to your new Smartphone software and have all your questions answered.

Windows Phone 7 Companion is available in both paperback and for the Kindle.

Like a novel the book is set out in chapters. At the start of the book these chapters are shown as ‘contents at a glance’ so if you are looking for one thing in particular it will get you to the right section.

On the next page the content is broken down further to enable you to find a quick solution/answer to your query.

So what does the book cover? Pretty much everything you could imagine. From the simplest things such as choosing a theme or adjusting the brightness, to more complicated tasks such as setting up a Zune and email account.

Now you may be put off reading a book about a phone because you don’t consider yourself to be that technical. Fear not. Matt has written the book with this in mind and tasks are explained in the simplest of ways and also accompanied with easy instructions.

Conclusion:

If you already use Windows Phone 7 the book is still worth a read. None of us know everything and I’m pretty sure you will pick up a few tips. If you are new to Windows Phone 7 or considering the move then this book will be the best instruction manual you could possibly get. From initial setup, to managing settings and problem solving, Windows Phone 7 Companion will be your lifeline to a smooth and pain free transition to a new Smartphone.
