Acer P630 Portable Navigator unboxed

EDIT: Our P630 review is now online HERE.

My parents recently decided that they wanted Sat Nav in their car. They would like something portable so that they can remove it from the car but didn’t like the idea of having a Smartphone or Pocket PC with with TomTom installed as they wanted to keep their current Nokia phones.

My initial thought was to get them a TomTom Go but these seem to be rather bulky so decided to see what else was available. That’s when I came across the Acer P630 portable navigator.

The P630 is a slim all-in-one navigation unit that includes CoPilot 6, built in GPS and a wide 4″ colour touch screen. With the Acer P630 you also get built in bluetooth for handsfree connectivity allowing you to connect your mobile phone, using the Acer as a speaker and microphone.

So I’m giving the Acer P630 a try at the moment and I’ll be posting my review soon. In the mean time, here’s an unbox video to show you what’s included in the package.

Download the WMV version of the video HERE.

    Orange Samsung i600 problems?

A while ago we unboxed the Samsung SGH-i600 and published this video of the device. Since then the i600 has been released on the Orange network and a number of our regular visitors have been asking if there is any difference between the straight Samsung and the Orange branded version of the i600.

Both devices have exactly the same hardware but there are some software differences as, once again, Orange removed MSN messenger from their version and branded the homescreen and icons. However there seems to be a more worrying problem with the Orange version. As you’ll see in the video below, there are some stablility issues. One of the first things I tried on the i600 is to change the ringtone but simply doing this is enough to crash the device and all one can do is remove the battery as it wont even respond to the power button.

Now I’m not sure if this is a general problem or if I have just been unlucky with the device I have but I shall be asking Orange to exchange this one!

Other than the above there really isn’t any difference between the two versions but you do get an extended as well as a standard battery with the one from Orange.

You can download a higher-res version of the video HERE.

    Orange SPV E600 unboxed

It’s been some time since we first reported that the Orange version of the HTC S620 (HTC Excalibur) would be made available to business customers as the Orange SPV E600. Since then the news on this device has been rather thin on the ground. However, we have now managed to get hold of and E600 for review. So, once again, we bring you another unboxing video and a preview of the SPV E600.

As mentioned in the video, the E600 has the same hardware as the HTC S620, the differences are software related. One of the biggest differences being that Orange have again removed MSN Messenger and Hotmail support from this device forcing you to look for a third-party IM solution.

The SPV E600 is only available to business customers at the moment. I’m not sure how they make these decisions but if you are a consumer customer you might have a battle on your hands if you want this device!

    Orange SPV E600 Specification:

  • Quadband GSM with EDGE
  • TI OMAP 850 processor
  • 1.3-megapixel CMOS camera
  • 2.4-inch 340×240-pixel LCD with 65K-color support
  • 128MB ROM; 64MB RAM
  • microSD expansion slot
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP and AVRCP
  • 802.11g, USB and infrared
  • 111 x 62.5 x 12.8mm; 130g
  • Check out the Orange E600 page HERE.

As always, you can download a higher res version of the video HERE.

Orange SPV E650 and HTC S710 Unboxed & Compared

The Orange SPV E650 was finally released last week and since then it has proven to be very popular and is the device that we are emailed about most. In fact you probably wont find it at your local Orange retail outlet as, in most locations, it’s out of stock.

Both SPV E650 and the HTC S710 are based on the HTC Vox and are essentially the same device. However, I managed to get my hands on both so thought that I’d do a double unboxing video to see if there are any differences between the two.

A few things I would point out to anyone looking to buy an Orange SPV E650.

  • The neither device has built in GPS. We had several emails this week from people having just purchased an E650 and being disapointed to learn that the GPS isn’t there.
  • Orange have removed Windows Live Messenger from the E650. This is because they are planning to launch their own IM service later this year. The HTC S710 has Messenger left intact.
  • You can download the full length video, in higher res, from HERE or if you prefer to use YouTube you can see the video, on two parts, HERE (Pt1) and HERE (Pt2).

The HTC S710 is now available to buy from Clove Technology. Thanks once again to Clove for supplying the S710 for review, and to Russell for letting me borrow his brand new E650 as Orange have yet to find us one!

    Orange SPV E650/HTC S710 Specification:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone
  • TI OMAP 850 CPU @ 200Mhz
  • Quad Band EDGE/GSM (No 3G!)
  • 2.4″ QVGA 240 x 320 screen
  • 96Mb RAM, 128Mb ROM
  • Bluetooth 2
  • Dimensions: 100 x 50 x 18mm
  • USB and WiFi (802.11b/g)
  • ‘Spring Loaded’ Qwerty keyboard
  • 2MP Camera
  • 5 way jog bar
  • MicroSD card slot
