T-Mobile touts GPS Mission app for iPhone at gamescom 2009

Last week we have dropped by to the biggest gaming trade show in the world (over 3 times bigger than American E3 and also bigger than Japanese Tokyo Game Show): gamescom 2009 in Germany. While most of the stuff on that trade show was about gaming consoles, we have spotted also a stand of T-Mobile in form of a truck:

… where you can see that T-Mobile is promoting all over the place the “GPS Mission” app for iPhone. Since T-Mobile Germany has exclusivity on iPhone it is not strange that they were promoting iPhone (see the video above) but why did they promote this particular app? Anyway, here is the description of this GPS gaming app:

You can go out and collect gold or play GPS missions in 65 countries using this Lite version. There are gold stashes, scavenger hunts, quests for treasure, crime stories or time travels waiting in your area. The community is adding new GPS Missions every day.

You too can create GPS games in a simple way at the GPS Mission web site (www.gpsmission.com).

Features:

– Play GPS missions world-wide at interesting places. GPS Mission Lite allows free and full access to all of the missions created by the community.

– Collect digital trophies and souvenirs.

– Document your life in a playful way with GPS Mission. Using the waymark feature you’ll create geocoded pictures or text messages that you can also send to your friends. Waymarks show where you are and where you play – live on the map!

– In our community you can see live players world-wide. Compare yourself with players in the high-score list!

Commentary: with era of app stores clearly mobile gaming is routing around operators. Times when mobile game developers had to go through mobile portals of operators to get to customers – are almost over. Still however several Java games are available mostly through operator portals and being promoted by operator is also a big boost for apps that are available only on the app store…
