O2 Existing iPhone customers upgrade path to iPhone 3G

Existing O2 iPhone customers can upgrade early to the new iPhone 3G for free on certain tariffs according to O2 however you will have to agree to a new 18 month contract from the date of the upgrade. I was thinking that this seems a fair deal as usually there is a penalty for upgrading early on a contract plan but then I remembered that you have already paid for an unsubsidised handset up front so really its the least they can do.
