Gigabyte GSmart MS800 unboxed

A few weeks ago I was able to get my hands on the new GSmart MW700 and although I was only able to use the demo unit briefly I was reasonably impressed with it. This week I had another package arrive from Taiwan, this time containing the retail version of the MW700 and it’s ‘bigger brother’ the MS800.

Although I say bigger brother, the two devices are almost identical, they have the same RAM, ROM and CPU and both include a SiRF Star III GPS chipset. Where they do differ though is that the MS800 is a 3G/HSDPA version where the MW700 is GPRS and EDGE. The MS800 also has a built in radio.

We are going to review the two devices in jointly as there is little difference between them. Enjoy the unboxing video for now and we’ll be back when we’ve had time to ‘put pen to paper’ as it were.

HTC Touch Diamond Zoom Control video

In this, the last of our HTC Touch Diamond videos for a while, you’ll see Paul demonstrating the cool zoom features of the device. The zoom controls work in the image viewer and web browser but I assume that this could be extended in to other applications in the future. Other places where this control would be useful is in viewing Word and Excel documents and PDF’s

Check out sensitive the touch screen is when scrolling around in the web browser!

Once we have our hands on our own HTC Touch Diamond you can expect to see more footage. Please do feel free to submit your questions about the device either via the comments or by emailing me.

    HTC Touch Diamond notifications

In an earlier post we mentioned the ring of LEDs around the dpad on the HTC Touch Diamond and how these LEDs acted as notification lights for various events on the device.

Paul (MoDaCo) and I managed to capture the LEDs ‘in action’ in this very short video clip below. In this instance the notification, the lights spinning around the dpad, tells you that you have an unread text message.

I like the idea of the notifications as you can see what’s going on with the phone without having to turn on the screen and waste valuable battery power.

Other notification states for the LEDs are slowly throbbing for voicemail and flashing for unread email.

HTC Touch Diamond full launch video

The main press announcement for the HTC Touch Diamond was about an hour long and included pieces from HTC, Microsoft and Orange. I recorded the full presentation and you can find the video below. Word of warning though, it is almost an hour in length, I’ve cut the pause for applause and the bit where someone stood up in front of me but other than that it is the full announcement including Q&A at the end.

    HTC Touch Diamond promo video

Here’s another video for you from the HTC press conference yesterday. This is the official HTC Touch Diamond promo video. You can probably expect to see this video cropping up all over the web and there is even talk of this advert, or a version of it, being used on the TV here in the UK.

Still more photos and video to come.

HTC Touch Diamond in action (Video)

Paul (MoDaCo) and I were able to spend quite some time playing with the HTC Touch Diamond today and between us we’ve come up with the following video demonstrating the device in action.

    HTC Touch Diamond in action

I have a great deal of video left to process so you can expect to see more online in the coming days. We’re still at the event and will shortly be heading off to for dinner so I’ll be posting more when I return. Trying to get the balance between finding out the information and then finding the time to post and pass it on is tricky!

    Gigabyte GSmart MW700 unboxed

Just a little while ago I managed to (briefly) get my hands on Gigabyte’s new GSmart Windows Mobile offering, the MW700.

The MW700 is a fairly typical Windows Mobile 6 Professional device, perhaps a little lighter and thinner than other devices available at the moment but does have the added benefit of built in SiRF Star III GPS, fast CPU and 256MB Rom although, frustratingly, only 64MB of RAM which does mean the unit struggles from time to time.

It’s still not clear whether or not the device will be officially released here in the UK so we may or may not get a loan unit for full review, however, you can see the device in more detail in our unbox video below:

    Asus M930 unboxed

The Asus M930 joins the ranks as one of the few devices to have both a numeric phone pad (outside) and a full QWERTY keyboard (inside). It’s a thin and elegant looking candy bar style device which looks more like an ‘ordinary’ phone rather than a Windows Mobile smartphone. BUT, when you open up the M930 it reveals a little secret as hidden away inside is another LCD Screen and a full QWERTY keyboard.

    HTC P6500 unboxed

A rether unusual device from HTC this one. The P6500 is a larger device that looks rather like a hand-held barcode scanner that you would see in your local supermarket. And that’s exactly the kind of application HTC have in mind for this device, even going so far as to say:

From logistics to warehousing and transportation, this full-featured PDA fits perfectly into any industry. With the open Windows architecture, it is simple to develop custom industry-specific applications that extend the use of the device far beyond making calls and sending e-mails.

The large 3.5-inch anti-glare screen enables images, media and data to be viewed with complete clarity. Combined with the auto-focus 3 megapixel camera which captures clear, sharp images, the HTC P6500 is perfect for 2D barcode and business card reader applications*. Critical data is kept secure down to storage card level with enhanced security features such as fingerprint ID sensors.

Once again, we’ll be reviewing the device over the coming weeks and are looking at it with more ‘industrial’ applications in mind. Here is the unbox to give you a better idea of what I am talking about:

  • Windows Mobile 6 Professional
  • 3.5″ QVGA (240 x 320) TFT display
