Low Power Wide Area Networks coming next year

picowanPicoWAN’s aim is to be the first LP-WAN (Low Power – Wide Area Network) RF network for connected objects, which will be collaborative, global, cross-border and available at a very low price. It will be launched in Europe from June 2016.

“PicoWAN is a project close to my heart. I have been deeply involved in the development and have even filed 3 patents,” announces Henri CROHAS, President of ARCHOS. “The potential is huge.”

A revolution in the Internet of Things

The key to this innovation is a unique wireless communications network protocol based on the use of pico-gateways, as opposed to rooftop concentrators and antennas, which come in the form of smart plugs connected to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet. Embedding a LoRa™ IC, the range of pico-gateways is potentially as long as the sophisticated antenna gears installed on rooftops by telcos. As a result of its low-cost and its easy installation inside buildings, the network can be densified at will and made fail–safe, penetrate very deep indoor resulting in a much higher QoS (Quality of Service).

A collaborative network at a very low price

The cost of a pico-gateway is some 100 times less than the cost of a rooftop installation. Instead of investing tens of million euros in infrastructure, PicoWAN will create a highly competitive LP-WAN thanks to the viral diffusion of very low-cost pico-gateways.

To ensure the deployment of a global network throughout Europe, PicoWAN plans to distribute up to 200,000 free pico-gateways by the end of 2016.

PicoWAN will offer a subscription plan starting at £0.50 pence per year, per connected object. Those who will deploy pico-gateway networks locally will receive up to 50% of the income resulting from the connections passing through their pico-gateways.

Optimal compatibility with connected objects

The software embedded in connected objects will be freely available to all developers and integrators developing on vertical or consumer markets, who can then set up their own IoT networks. This technology will facilitate the launch of multiple connected objects in all domains (health, agriculture, home automation, industry, and more), instantly supported by the PicoWAN network anywhere.

All LoRaWANTM objects can be made compatible with ease.

Join us at the Mobile Word Congress in Barcelona in February 2016 for a demonstration of PicoWAN network.

Garmin combine Satnav and Dashcam in the nüviCam

image001Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. has launched the nüviCam, the first portable navigation device (PND) to feature a built-in dash cam and advanced alerts to enhance driver awareness on the road. Thanks to the integrated dash cam that continuously records and automatically saves files on impact, the nüviCam offers the protection of having an eyewitness that records exactly where and when events occurred.

One of the most comprehensive sat navs to ever hit the roads, the nüviCam offers the latest in premium driver-assist features typically found only in luxury vehicles. For example, Forward Collision Warning2 alerts drivers if they’re driving too close to the car ahead; Lane Departure Warning2 alerts will appear and sound if the driver drifts off the road or into oncoming traffic; and Garmin Real Vision™ takes the guess work out of deciphering hard-to-see house numbers by displaying the camera view along with a bright arrow to direct drivers where to go when approaching select destinations.

“The nüviCam goes beyond helping drivers get from Point A to Point B,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin Vice President of worldwide sales. “The intuitive driver-assist features not only lessen the stress of getting you to your destination, but the nüviCam also provides peace of mind in knowing that your commute is being recorded and can be referenced should you need it.”

The nüviCam features a 6-inch pinch-to-zoom glass display with a high-definition dash cam built in to the back of the device. When powered on, the integrated dash cam continuously records on the included microSD card, and if an incident occurs, the device’s Incident Detection will automatically save files on impact. GPS records exactly where and when events occur and drivers can play back the video on the device or from a computer using garmin.com/dashcamplayer. There’s also a Snapshot feature on the nüviCam that allows drivers to capture still images in or outside of the vehicle if desired. The included magnetic mount enables the device to be easily and quickly secured or removed from the vehicle.
Other navigation features offered with safety and convenience in mind include voice-activated navigation that allows drivers to speak commands to the device while their hands stay safely on the wheel, and Bluetooth® wireless technology for hands-free calling (requires Bluetooth-enabled smartphone sold separately). Smartie pants use #WirelessArmour

Wireless Armour (2)Described by Sir Richard Branson as “underpants for superheroes”, a British scientist has unveiled Wireless Armour, a new line of ‘smart, wearable tech’ underwear which aims to protect male fertility by using a mesh of pure silver woven into fabric to shield against 99.9% of harmful electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted by Wi-Fi devices including smartphones and laptops.

It is estimated that 70 million couples are affected by infertility worldwide (1). Male fertility has declined in recent years (2) and this has been attributed to exposure to environmental factors including electromagnetic radiation emitted by Wi-Fi enabled devices such as smartphones and laptops which have been shown in clinical studies to lower sperm count and motility in men (3). In 2014 the University of Exeter conducted a comprehensive review of all the data from previous studies investigating the link between EMR and sperm damage the and the analysis indicated a negative associations between mobile phone exposure on sperm viability and motility (4). Whilst the findings are not 100% conclusive it does show a strong correlation between EMR exposure and lower sperm health. In one study in vitro sperm motility dropped to 49% and viability to 52% after just one hour of exposure to radiation emitted by a mobile phone (5). Additionally, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has assigned EMR as possibly carcinogenic to humans, in the category 2B, the same category as petrol exhaust fumes and other pollutants (6).

“Like so many people, my smartphone and laptop use has increased dramatically in recent years which made me realise that I was exposing myself to large amounts of electromagnetic radiation, mostly centred on my groin” says London scientist and Wireless Armour inventor, Joseph Perkins. “With my Physics background I knew there must be a way to shield from electromagnetic radiation using a simple solution. Wireless Armour has been tested by an industry leader in wireless shielding and the results show that our fabric shields against 99.9% of the radiation emitted between 100MHz to 2.6GHz. Put simply, this covers the entire range of radiation emitted by wireless devices, from voice and text through to 4G and Wi-Fi, almost everything is blocked.”

How Wireless Armour works

  • Wireless Armour has a mesh of pure silver woven into the fabric which creates an unbroken shield
  • The mesh disrupts the flow of electromagnetic radiation due to Silver being a conductor of electricity
  • The electromagnetic radiation becomes distributed evenly around the silver mesh and stops the electromagnetic radiation from flowing through it
  • A UK electromagnetic testing company showed that Wireless Armour’s unique fabric RadiaTex provides 99.9% shielding from electromagnetic radiation
  • The silver is weaved into the cotton to produce an extremely flexible soft fabric which lengthens the lifetime of Wireless Armour by increasing its strength
  • The silver fibres (about 35% of the total fabric) in Wireless Armour are highly anti-microbial, which means they increase hygiene by preventing the spread of bacteria and other microbes that cause smells

Wireless Armour retails between £24 – £35 and can be purchased here www.wirelessarmour.co.uk
