O2 reduces text and data roaming costs for UK Customers

image Ahead of this years summer holiday season, O2 has made reductions for its UK customers who use their mobile phones in EU countries.

The cost of texting for prepay customers has been reduced from 49p to 25p per text, matching the rate already in place for postpay customers.

HTC and Samsung not worried about iPhone 3G

image Smartphone makers and analysts have downplayed fears that Apple‘s iPhone 3G could pose a serious challenge for older smartphone manufacturers.

Analysts from Primasia Securities said in a report on major Taiwanese smartphone maker High Tech Computer (HTC) that concern about the iPhone 3G is " overblown".

O2 Existing iPhone customers upgrade path to iPhone 3G

image Existing O2 iPhone customers can upgrade early to the new iPhone 3G for free on certain tariffs according to O2 however you will have to agree to a new 18 month contract from the date of the upgrade. I was thinking that this seems a fair deal as usually there is a penalty for upgrading early on a contract plan but then I remembered that you have already paid for an unsubsidised handset up front so really its the least they can do. T-Mobile doubles cost of calling 0870 numbers

image In a remarkable reading of Ofcom’s new rules on 0870 numbers, T-Mobile has decided to double the price of such calls for most of its customers, rather than cutting them as Ofcom intended.

Ofcom decided that 0870, 0871, 0844 and 0845 numbers should be considered "normal" calls, and charged at the "normal" rate, but the regulator can’t mandate that such calls are included in the normally-bundled minutes, a loophole T-Mobile has decided to exploit.

Amsterdam gets Europe’s first mobile Wimax network

image A commercial network launched in Amsterdam on Tuesday is the first in Europe to use a mobile version of the Wimax standard to allow users to surf the Web at high speeds while on the move, operator Worldmax said.

The broadband wireless network is aimed at competing with telecoms operators KPN, Vodafone and T-Mobile, the privately held Dutch firm said.

Adobe iPhone Flash is in Development

An iPhone version of Adobe’s ubiquitous Flash plug-in is still early into development, the company has admitted. In an earnings call for Adobe’s second financial quarter, CEO Shantanu Narayen has responded to questions on if and when Flash will be ready for the iPhone 3G, which itself is only expected to ship on July 11th. Apple has long blocked the normal desktop version of Flash from the iPhone, insisting that it consumes too much battery power.
