Netfront Browser turns 4.0

The is no shortage of capable browsers for Windows Mobile these days and here is one of the stronger offerings with a new suit. Grand Theft Auto comes to the iPhone

Grand Theft Auto has arrived on the iPhone and iPod Touch with Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars making the jump to the iTunes App Store.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the iPhone uses onscreen controls rather than the iPhone’s accelerometer and includes the mini-games that were present in its original version.

Nexus One vs iPhone

I’ve only had the Nexus One for a few days and have to admit that so far it’s been pretty difficult to put it down, I think it’s fair to say that I quite like it!

After posting my Nexus One video on Saturday I’ve had loads of requests from readers asking how the Nexus One compares to the iPhone, both physically and in terms of functionality. In terms of the functional comparison I thought I would leave that until I publish m Nexus One review, which I am working on at the moment. However, to satisfy your curiosity in terms of the physical differences between the two I thought you light enjoy a few photos.

Looking at the Nexus One and the iPhone 3GS from the front they are of a similar size. The Nexus One is a little taller (119mm v 115mm) than the iPhone and a little narrower (59.8mm v 62.1mm). The Nexus is is also 5 grams lighter than the iPhone. In terms of the screen the Nexus One looks to have a much larger display than the iPhone but in reality the difference is just 0.2″, however, the Nexus One display is much higher res than the iPhone, 800 x 480 pixels for the Nexus against the 320 x 480 of the iPhone. When you look at the screens powered up the difference is clear!

Comparing both devices end-on the Nexus One is slightly thinner than the iPhone, but there’s less than 1mm between them. Despite the very curved back on the iPhone, which helps to make it appear thinner than it is, the Nexus One feels thinner than the 1mm may suggest.

Perhaps the reason why the Nexus One feels much thinner than the iPhone could be down to the camera placement. The 11.5mm of the Nexus is measured at the thickest part, which is just at the top by the camera which sticks out a little from the back. As you can see from the image above this makes the Nexus a bit thicker at the top than the rest of the unit so overall the device feels thinner.

So that’s just a few shots of the two devices side-by-side to give you an idea of the physical differences. They are quite similar really, anyone would think that Google were trying to compete with Apple or something! 😛

I’ll be back with my review as soon as I can get it done for you but that said, I’m not rushing it. I want to use the Nexus One for a good few days before I start to offer my opinion. Windows Mobile 7 not backwards compatible?

James posted earlier about Windows Mobile 7 and over the past week speculation as to its launch date have been rife. Will it launch, will it be at MWC, will there be an interim version of Windows Mobile (WM6.6), there seem to be more questions than hard-answers at the moment for sure!

Another story that surfaced earlier today was the question mark over Windows Mobile 7’s compatibility with existing WinMo applications. This came about after Eldar Murtazin allegedly got his hands on an early version of Windows Mobile 7 running on a yet to be announced new device. Murtazin then proceeded to tweet “Hate Windows Mobile 7. No apps from previous version of WM working here. Not compatible at all. Couldnt do anything.” Now these tweets from Murtazin have since been deleted but call my a suspicious soul, but I’d be surprised if a version of WM7 has really got in to the wild without anyone really knowing about it, no screen shots and substantiated evidence?

And what of this unknown handset? Again, it’s not very often that we don’t have at least some idea about what’s coming. All seems a bit suss to me!

Now we’ve already been told that Windows Mobile 7 is an all-new OS written from the ground up in much the same way as Windows Vista was. It should not be considered an upgrade to 6.5 but an all new version of the OS. With that said, I suppose it would be easy to understand how it would be possible for Windows Mobile 7 not to be backwards compatible BUT for Microsoft not to build in backwards compatibility would, in my opinion, be a huge mistake. Consider all the existing WinMo software back catalogue, it’s not a small number of apps. and games!

I’d be very surprised if Windows Mobile 7 turned out not to be able to run existing software, maybe there would be issues with the odd title but not the whole lot!?

Palm OS coming on a new device?

Arguably the biggest problem with the Palm OS was it’s inability to work with 3G however it was a strong and stable operating system. So what’s to stop non-3G devices running it? Well nothing! Aceeca seem to have plans to continue to produce reinforced handsets using the old operating system whilst updating it to the newer 5.x. Whilst the rumoured $199 and $499 price tags might seem a little excessive we’ll watch these devices closely just to see how and why they have decided to go with the Palm OS.

Sky+ Remote Record application updated

We are big fans of Sky Satellite TV here at Mobile Tech Addicts and the one thing lacking is a decent application to view upcoming TV but more importantly be able to set your box to record it while you were out and about.

Sky did release a rather awful application that was slow and unreliable but this refresh looks fantastic and is fast and now includes all the missing HD content too.

Vodafone Access Gateway Review (Sure Signal)

What do you do if you have tried every mobile network where you live and discover that they are all pretty poor and you suffer random loss of service, missed calls and frustration, well Vodafone think they have the answer with their Access Gateway or as their starting to call it Sure Signal.

This is basically a femtocell that connects to your home broadband connection and provides a full 3G signal to your phone for calls and data.
