ZDNet managed to get an interview with Palm product line manager Rob Katcher about the Pre and webOS at Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona. In the video he talks about the Pre, development of applications and a few other interesting questions thrown at him. The Pre is looking like a great device however I am still concerned that we have not seen any information, or demonstrations of the media player yet. If you know different let me know. Video after the break.
Ryanair has installed the technology in 20 of it’s planes to allow in-flight use of mobile phones on many of it’s services. Calls are at a premium at around £1.50 to £3 per minute and texts at 40p and currently only six people at once will be able to make calls. You will also have to pay to receive incoming calls.
Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s chief executive, was characteristically bullish. “No one is flying Ryanair because it is a bastion of solitude or tranquillity.” he said. “Anyone who likes to sleep, we will wake them up and sell them a sandwich or coffee.”
Like it or not, the age of the in-flight mobile has dawned. And from now on when boarding flights, in addition to crying babies and the overweight, passengers wary of who they will be sitting next to will also be watching out for the verbose.

Opera have announced Opera Mobile 9.5 technology preview with support for Gears, a Google open source project that enables more powerful web applications. Besides this Opera Mobile 9.5 technology preview, Gears is currently available for Firefox 1.5+, IE 6.0+, Internet Explorer Mobile 4.01+, Safari 3.1.1, and Android.
The use cases for Gears differ somewhat between mobile and desktop devices. On mobile, Gears is perfect for creating a better user experience by allowing applications to cache data more efficiently, so you can cut down on bandwidth, and carry out processes discreetly in the background. On the desktop, Gears has ideal functionality for allowing your applications to function offline and synchronize data with the server when you get back online again. More information after the break.
One of the biggest disappointments for me from MWC 09 in Barcelona was the failure by Palm to announce that the Palm Pre would be launching in Europe and which carriers we would be seeing it on. Sure we had rumours that it would be on Vodafone based on a Vodafone SIM card being installed in the demo phones at MWC which would make sense but that was all. Well up until this point the Palm Pre did not even exist on Palm’s UK site. That has just changed and you can now register for updates as to when it will be available. If your interested in the Palm Pre head on over and register for further information.

Pocketnow have managed to flash an HTC Touch HD with a ROM from XDA-Developers that has the updated version of TouchFlo 3D that we saw announced for the new Diamond2 and TouchPro2 in Barcelona this week. This version of TouchFLO 3D adds a few new areas – Facebook functionality, a deeper contacts integration, a new calendar tab, and Push Internet. Also, TouchFLO 3D now works in landscape. We get a new keyboard with an improved design, plus sound and haptic feedback. Take a look at the video after the break.

If you didn’t get to the HTC launch event in Barcelona but would like to see how the announcements of the Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 unfolded you can now see the full press event video. We have it after the break and you can watch it in High Quality too. See the new features of TouchFlo 3D and the new handsets demonstrated by HTC.
Here’s a video I found on Youtube of the Diamond2 that was recently announced at Mobile World Congress. Size wise it seems pretty big, maybe the same as the Touch HD however the interface looks smooth and well implemented. Windows Mobile 6.1 looks rather well and finger friendly here. Check the video after the break.
Google Mobile App gives you faster searching on your Windows Mobile device, with easy access to your favourite Google applications from the Today screen. There’s no need to wait for a browser to open to begin a search, and with search history available to reduce typing, you can get your search results with fewer clicks than before. For an even speedier experience, Pocket PC users can add the Google Mobile App to the start menu (Settings: Menus) or configure a hardware key (Settings: Buttons) to provide easy access from within any application on your phone. See it in action in the video after the break.
We have seen mixed impressions of the recently announced Toshiba TG01 Windows Mobile 6.1 phone, well the good news is the guys from IntoMobile managed to pin down Toshiba at MWC and got them to demo the phone on video. Their impressions, “The Toshiba UI overlay shines as a finger-friendly alternative to the TG01’s Windows Mobile 6.1 underpinnings. The UI gets the job done well. It’s no TouchFLO 3D, but Toshiba clearly spent a good amount of time developing the Toshiba UI. As a multimedia platform, the Toshiba TG01’s Snapdragon chipset outperforms just about every other smartphone on market. From smooth-as-butter high-res video playback to 3D gaming, the TG01 delivers, and then some. The integrated GPS navigation software ensures that you’ll never be left struggling to find your way around town." Take a look for yourself, the video is after the break along with the confirmed specifications.
