MWC Starts Tomorrow

MWC_logo As the title says, Mobile World Congress (MWC) gets underway in Barcelona tomorrow so we can expect plenty of news and press releases over the next week or so as the mobile industry gears up to making announcements about the products that are going to be hitting the market this year.

There are events taking place in the UK as well as other countries too relating to the events taking place in Barcelona. We’ve already been attending such events here in London over the past week and we’ll be kicking off our MWC news cycle later on today once some embargos have been lifted! 😉

We can certainly expect plenty from HTC, Sony Ericsson and Samsung to name just a few but there will be no shortage of announcements so keep your eyes peeled!

ZTE Tania: At last a budget Windows Phone

zte-tania In case you missed it, I few days ago ZTE held a small launch event in London where they announced their latest handset, the ZTE Tania. Up until now ZTE have only released smartphones running Android OS but with the Tania that set to change as this puppy run Windows Phone Mango.

The Tania is set to be an ‘affordable’ Windows Phone and there really isn’t yet a packed market place when it comes to Windows Phone so it will be very interesting to see how well it does.

Personally I think it’s a good looking handset and it works well in white even of the noise on Twitter does call it a girly phone with a girly name.

Specs and the press release can be found below:

HTC Explorer unboxing video

HTC Explorer The HTC Explorer is the newest Android smartphone from HTC. HTC state that the Explorer is their most affordable smartphone coming in at the £150 mark it’s currently their least expensive (current) model.

The explorer is certainly small, a few millimetres shorter than the Wildfire and a little thinner than the Wildfire S whilst retaining the same 3.2″ HVGA screen size. Not surprisingly, the HTC Explorer doesn’t have the same aluminium construction as its more expensive counterparts, but instead has a rubberised back and edges that looks like an additional case around it.

There is a price to pay for the reduced cost of the HTC Explorer, the CPU is a somewhat limited 600MHz and available storage is just 90MB so you’ll be reaching for a MicroSD card pretty quickly. That said, as you can see in the benchmark in the video below, the Explorer seems to run at a reasonable pace and benefits from HTC Sense 3.5

Full review coming soon but for now here’s the unboxing and demo video.

Samsung Galaxy W unboxing video

IMG_3004 I know the Samsung Galaxy W has been out for a little while but I have a confession to make. I recorded this unboxing video some weeks ago and it wasn’t until I had the completed review from Luke yesterday that I realised that I hadn’t uploaded the video to YouTube or here on the site. oops!

You may be forgiven for thinking that the Galaxy W is a lower-end or entry level phone but when you start to take a look at the spec sheet (which you can see below) you’ll notice a few things that make it stand out and elevate its position. For example, you’ll find a 1.4GHz CPU in there and while it may not be dual core it really does tick along nicely as you can see in the benchmark video.

There’s also a decent amount of built in memory so you wont be immediately reaching for a microSD card either.

In the unboxing video below you can see me check out some of the main features and see how it performs.

More on Nokia’s Lumia 900

nokia-lumia-900 We looked at the new Nokia Lumia 800 a few weeks ago and rumours of the Lumia 900 have been rife for weeks. Said to be a larger version of the Windows Phone 7 powered Lumia 800 but with a 4.3″ display coming in as the flagship WP7 handset.

No official news on the Lumia 900 as yet but a few new interesting tit-bits have surfaced of the last day or so. The chaps over at Pocket-lint have uncovered some interesting looking marketing material.

The leaked images, discovered just before Christmas were billed as the Nokia Lumia 800 coming in an array of new colours – yellow and white if you are interested.

However Pocket-lint believes, on closer inspection, that the marketing images found by French site MonWindowsPhone are in fact of the Nokia Lumia 900, not the Lumia 800.

Head over to Pocket-lint to see more.

Christmas Gadgets

xmas_ball

As it’s Boxing Day and like half the world I’ll be spending time with the family I thought I would kick off a post that maybe (hopefully) leads to a little feedback from readers.

What did you get for Christmas?

Leading up to Christmas I had dozens of emails from readers looking for advice on which new mobile to buy for a loved-one or even for themselves. I expect the mobile networks would have been inundated with news connections yesterday!

So if you’re one of those people that picked up a new mobile for xmas, what did you get? Happy with your gift/purchase? The first 24 hours with a new gadget are always the most ‘interesting’! 🙂

No new mobiles tracyandmatt household this year. Tracy bought me a new coffee machine and, as a really unusual gift, shares in the Disney Corporation. Tracy got a new keyboard for her iMac and some new Wii games but we’ve been rather devoid of gadgets this year. We need to share in your gadget euphoria!

HTC Sensation XL with Beats Audio Review

HTC-Sensation-XL-Contract-DealsThe HTC Sensation XL is a brand new phone from the company with a new direction to it as well, it has Beats audio by Dr Dre built in with additional Beats headphones too.

This isn’t the only phone of its type as HTC have also recently released the Sensation XE into the market but I definitely think that this phone is what they would call their ‘flagship device’ now due to its quite frankly enormous 4.7 inch screen and its powerful 1.5Ghz single core processor.

Will this beast of a phone stack up against the mass of Android smartphones on the market?

Read on to find the answer.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro Review

XperiaPro-main A little while ago Matt did an unboxing video of a handset that I personally had my eye on because my partner and sister are looking for a decent phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, so when I got the e-mail from Matt asking me to review the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro I jumped at the chance!

As you may notice this is going to be my 3rd Sony Ericsson Xperia phone to review in as many months, so I am sure that you will say to yourselves well ‘What’s the difference really?’

Well to find out the answer to that question you will have to read on to find the full review.

HP webOS made Open Source

HP_webos_OSS At the end of last week HP announced that they would be making webOS open source. Initial reactions were that this would be a really good thing and personally I was in agreement. As I said may times in review and on our podcast, I liked the operating webOS operating system that Palm/HP put on the Pre and Pixi but was massively unimpressed with the hardware so opening up webOS to other manufacturers sounds good, I’ve love to see a webOS HTC phone!

Indeed rumour has it that HTC are already working on a webOS handset.

So what’s the downside? Well one has to wonder what will happen to webOS. Will HP simply abandon the platform? That is perhaps the worry and the risk now as HP wont be making the money from the OS that they once were or had hoped to. Will they continue to love and support it?

In their press release, which you can see below, HP assures us that “HP plans to continue to be active in the development and support of webOS” but you have to wonder to what degree they will now do that.
