HTC release Bluetooth fix for TyTN II, Touch and S710

You may recall that I spoke about problems with the Bluetooth implementation on the HTC TyTN II, specifically that it would not work properly with OEM Bluetooth car kits installed in some BMW’s and Jaguars. My personal experience of the problem meant that the speakers worked fine but no one could hear me via the microphone.

It seems that the problem was a little more widespread and that the HTC S710 and HTC Touch also had the same Bluetooth issues as the TyTN II. Fortunately HTC have come to the rescue and have released a fix in the form of a CAB file.

You’ll need to register and login to the HTC Eclub website to in order to download the update but the good news is that it wont wipe all your existing data!

Toshiba G910 and G920 appear on FCC

The Toshiba G910 and G920 have both appeared on the FCC website. Saying ‘Both’ isn’t really that accurate though as they are essentially the same device. The only difference between the two is that the G910 has its integrated GPS disabled.

Toshiba G910/G920

Toshiba G910/G920

There are several photos of the new devices on the FCC site but basically we are looking at a clamshell design with a full QWERTY keyboard, dual cameras for video calling, an external LCD display (that looks like it’s been stolen from a digital watch), Windows Mobile 6 Professional, Tri-band, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.

Toshiba G910/G920

Toshiba G910/G920

If it genuinely is the case that the G910 and the G920 are the saem device I suspect that it would only be a matter of time before someone works out how to enable the latent GPS unit in the G910 and save everyone the expense of buying the G920.

Let’s hope that the final production units look a bit prettier than the ones shown on the FCC. The white circles on the front, which look to me like navigation and phone buttons, look terrible and the external LCD seems to be a bit of an after-thought.

Orange report reveals explosion in mobile data usage

According to a recent report from Orange (the Digital Media Index) there has been a massive increase in mobile data usage over the past three months, quoting up to a 37% increase in some services.

The report, an excerpt of which you’ll find below, makes for some interesting reading. However it really does make me wonder why Orange can’t offer a truly unlimited data package to their customers? Surely by now Orange must realise the importance of mobile data, and their customers need to cap the cost of their access and not have to worry about a nasty surprise at the end of the month? How much longer must we wait for a (reasonably priced) unlimited data service?

The Digital Media Report:

Orange unveiled its second Digital Media Index, a detailed report examining trends in customer consumption of digital media. The Orange Digital Media Index reveals usage patterns across the full range of Orange’s entertainment and communications services, including home broadband, text and picture messaging, and mobile internet over a three month period.

Key findings from the Orange Digital Media Index include:

  • The camera phone comes of age – there has been a 37% surge in picture messaging with over 1 million photos uploaded from mobiles to online photo albums in August alone
  • The continued popularity of text messaging – a 25% increase in the medium, with over 1 billion text messages sent per month
  • The mobile internet gains momentum – Orange World, the Orange mobile portal, received 2.34 million monthly visitors and an average of 250,000 daily repeat users
  • Music downloads soar – there has been a 15% increase in music downloads to a figure of 295,000, and a 3.4% increase in games downloaded to 691,032
  • A strong demand for mobile television – so much so that revenue is almost double the forecast
  • The Index shows that there has been an explosion in mobile data services, generating nearly 22% of network revenue in the last nine months. Rather than using mobile phones for just voice calls and text messaging, customers are increasingly exploring the mobile internet and using email and social networking sites to keep in touch.

    More HTC Shift delays

More bad news for those of us waiting for the HTC Shift, once again HTC have pushed back the launch date. We’ll now have to wait until the new year for HTC’s UMPC device.

    HTC Shift

    HTC Shift

“High Tech Computer (HTC) has delayed volume shipments of its HTC Shift UMPC (ultra mobile PC) to January of 2008, instead of the third quarter of 2007 as originally planned, according to market sources. Problems related to the integration of HTC Shift’s hardware and software caused the delay, said the sources, noting that the Shift will run on both Microsoft’s Windows Vista and Windows Mobile.”

There’s still no official word from HTC as to when they will no release the Shift but it’s looking more like the end of January begining of February 2008.

    HTC S730 unboxed

The HTC S730 is the latest smartphone device from HTC. I guess you could think of it as being un updated, 3G version of the S710.

When the device was first announced there was some confusion over the specification, some saying that it would have GPS and others that it would not. I can confirm, however, that the retail S730 does NOT have built in GPS.

As always, the review is coming but here is our unbox:

Important information is just a glance away with the Live HTC Home™ screen, giving you an instant view of email, calendar, messages, missed calls and more. With email directly to your phone, super-fast internet access, and a full range of connectivity options, you can be sure to be kept in touch no matter where you are in the world.

    Polaroid Definia updated

You may recall that in our Polaroid Definia Review I mentioned that the power LED on the 37″ model I reviewed was rather too bright and that I found it annoyingly distracting.

When I raised this issue with Polaroid at the time they agreed with my comments and assured me that they would look in to the problem and see if there was anything that could be done during manufacturing to resolve the issue. While it was nice to have the accept it as an issue, I have to admit that I didn’t think anything would happen.

However, I got an email from Polaroid yesterday saying that they had been able to implement a fix and that all new Definia models being manufactured from now on would include a minor hardware update!

    Definia LED control board

    Definia LED control board

In the image above you can see the circuit board for the power indicator on the infrared receiver. Notice that there is now a black divider between the IR sensor and the power LED, to stop the light from the power LED bleeding out through the IR sensor on the front of the TV, and that the power LED itself (the white bit in the middle of the photo) is now a frosted white rather than clear.

I know this is just a simple fix but I’m sure this will greatly improve matters and I have to take my hat off to Polaroid for implementing a fix so quickly and for actually making the effort to do so in the first place. It’s very, very unsual for changes to be made to a product during the manufacturing stage and it just goes to prove how commited Polaroid must do to getting their product right and to giving the consumer the best experience possible.

    Well done Polaroid!!

Asus Eee PC 701 (quick) review

    Introduction

The Asus Eee PC is a new product line for Asus which they hope will find a place for those people for whom a smartphone is too small and full laptop is too cumbersome. At first I was unsure as to who might actually purchase an Eee PC, would it be students, techies or business users? However, it looks like everyone is buying them, there is virtually no stock in the UK now!

    Asus Eee PC 701

    Asus Eee PC 701

    What’s in the box?

The device itself, instruction book, installation CD, battery, power adaptor, er, that’s it. Take a look at Matt’s unboxing video for more.

    Asus Eee PC 701 Specification:

    • Inter Celeron M 900mHz CPU
    • 7″ TFT display – 800 x 480 pixels
    • 512MB RAM
    • 4GB SSD storage
    • SD Card Slot (SDHC compatible)
    • Built in WiFi 802.11b/g
    • Ethernet connector
    • VGA socket for external monitor
    • 3 USB2 sockets
    • Linux pre-installed (Windows XP Compatible)
    • 0.92 kg
    • 4 Cell battery: 5200 mAh, 3.5hrs

    General

The Eee PC opens easily to reveal a small, but full QWERTY keyboard, trackpad mouse button.

    Eee PC Keyboard

    Eee PC Keyboard

The screen is smaller than expected given the real estate available.

The Ethernet port is located on the left hand side next to one of three USB ports and the audio lines In and Out. The other two are on the right hand side next to a SDHC card slot.

    Eee PC left side

The removable battery slots very smoothly in and out the spine of the unit and power cord plugs into the back. The power cord has no power pack as such but instead what looks like a large mobile phone charging plug.

There’s also a built in webcam which you should be able to use for video conferencing.

    Highlights

    • Speed
    • Simple but powerful OS
    • Ease of networking

    Lowlights

    • Screen size
    • Trackpad mouse button

    Review

It has to said that the keyboard, trackpad and mouse button does feel distincltively cheap, but that said the device IS cheap so you get what you pay for and given what you get on the inside it’s hard to grumble. That aside the only other disappointment was the screen size which, given the overall size of the device does feel a bit small. However a larger screen would no doubt to have added to the price and made it feel less economically attractive.

The default installed OS is the Linux-based Eee PC version 1.0.1 but should you wish, it is possible to install Windows XP.

The Eee PC is one of the easiet devices to get to grips with. By doing away with the traditional desktop metaphor and simply presenting the user with large icons divided up into common usage groups, it’s almost impossible for any user to go wrong.

Connection to both wired and wireless networks was unbelievably quick and simple and made one wonder why Microsoft make it so difficult.

Program are divided into six groups: Internet, Work, Learn, Play, Settings and Favourites.

The Internet group provides shortcuts to Web Mail, Web, iGoogle, Messenger, Skype, Network, eBook, Google Docs, World Clock, Internet Radio and Wireless Networks.
Web Mail provides shortcuts to Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and AOL mail.
Web launches version 2 of the excellent Mozilla Firefox browser. The messenger client, Pidgin provides connection to all major IM protocols including Gtalk and Jabber.
Skype is an excellent default installation a works seamlessley.

In the Work category shortcuts are provided to Accessories, Documents, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Adobe PDF Reader, Mail, File Manager, Dictionary and Notes.
Accessories include, Calculator, PIM and Screen Capture.
The main productivity applications are all provided by the wonderful open source alternative to MS Office, OpenOffice.org.

The Learn group rather excitingly gives shortcuts to Science, Language, Math (sic) and Paint.

Play is where you’ll find Games, Music Player, Music Manager, Photo Manager, Video Manager, Web Cam and Sound Recorder. The usual selection of casual games are provided including, Solitaire, Tetris and Sudoku.

The media player does exactly what it says on the tin supporting all the common file types while the media managers do leave quite a lot to be desired. Not really managers so much as glorified file explorers. however, if you download the right codecs you can even watch your DivX movies.

Despite being able to record images and video using the built in web cam I found it impossible to get online video recorders to recognise it – although this could well be a defficiency in my technical abilities. There is said to be a new version of Skype on its way that will support the webcam for video calling.

The Settings category provides a wide range of useful utilities including Anti Virus, Disk Utility, Diagnostic Tools and Voice Commands. Use Disk Utility to repair permissions according to Computer Technicians.

The responsiveness and speed of the Eee PC is a joy and navigating around is very intuitive. It’s a device which you wouldn’t want to spend too much time using but for the short periods you do it exceeds expectations in almost every area.

Having played with the device for a while I can start to see where/how it would be used. Students looking for an inexpensive, yet capable laptop should consider the Eee PC while business people on the go will love the portability and battery life.

I think that in order to be a proper business tool you’d have to look to install Windows and some sort of office suite. Matt has been using his Eee PC for a few weeks and now has Windows XP and MS Office installed on his – he swears by it. Matt will be writing a follow up to this article at some point and will tell you all about his experiences with the Eee PC, in particularly, installing XP and other software. For mobile and Laptop apps, a great resource to check out is https://mytechnolojoy.com.

    Conclusion

All in all an excellent device for the money and highly recommended for reluctant technophobes and gadget feaks alike.

The more you use the Asus Eee PC the more it makes sense, what started out for me as a gadget or a ‘toy’ has now become a useful tool and one that I do not wish to give up. Considering how light the Eee PC is and how common WiFi hot spots are becoming I think this will the standard for business UMPC’s for a while!
