Spring Design Unveils Dual Screen Android-Based eReader

If you listened to the Mobiletech Addicts podcast that James and I were guests on a few days ago, you’ll know that one of the subjects that we discussed in detail was the popularity of the Android OS and how it is being integrated in to more than just mobile phones, finding it’s way in to the Archos 5 internet tablet and several Netbooks already.

Today at CES California based Spring Design Inc. announced their latest eReader, strangely named, Alex. The eReader will feature two screens. a 3.2″ Colour display will be used for the user interface while a 6″ EPD screen will be used for displaying books and documents.

The press release can be seen below. I wonder if we’ll see anything like this in the UK?

Spring Design Unveils Alex Dual Screen Android-Based eReader at CES 2010

First eReader with Internet Browsing While Reading

FREMONT, Calif. –(Business Wire)– Jan 07, 2010 Spring Design http://www.springdesign.com will take the wraps off the AlexT, the only dual-screen Google Android-based eReader to fully integrate web browsing and reading, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas January 7-10, 2010.

The debut of the Alex will take place at the press-only Lunch at Piero’s media and innovator event January 7 and 8 where the company will demonstrate Alex’s full browser capabilities and patented dual screen interaction technology, the Duet NavigatorT that enables Alex users to search the Internet on the 3.5″ color browser LCD screen while displaying books, periodicals and even personal, educational and corporate documents on the Alex’s paper-like 6″ EPD screen. The Alex browser and virtual keyboard provide handy access to email, calculator and will accommodate a growing number of programs from the Google Android community.

Alex’s network connections with WiFi, 3G, EVDO/CDMA and GSM, makes it the first truly mobile wireless e-reader device that gives users access to the Internet and their own personalized library on the go, whenever and wherever they need it.

Alex can be purchased for $399.00 starting February 22, 2010 on the www.springdesign.com site with other availability to be announced.

Spring Design created the Alex as an open systems device with the ability to download any book or document that conforms to the Adobe ePUB/PDF/DRM standard or .txt or HTML format. Alex’s fully functional browser gives users the flexibility to explore the Internet to access text, music, video, and images to enrich their reading experience, or annotate text with comments, multimedia or user-selected hyperlinks to other web sites and resources found online or stored by the user on the Alex eReader removable microSD card.

“We designed Alex to expand the users’ reading enjoyment, enriching the content whether it is reading for pleasure, education or business, and enhancing the capabilities with access to the growing suite of Android applications,” said Spring Design Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Eric Kmiec. “We believe Alex enables readers to transcend the printed page to an interactive multi-media reading experience; letting children browse classic picture books with music to serious students who can view videos of science experiments online on the LCD screen while reading textbooks on the EPD screen.”

Spring Design Eric Kmiec will be a speaker on a panel at HigherEdTECH, “From Dewey to Digital Free,” an exploration of how eBooks, digital devices and sophisticated search engines are shaking up the world of textbooks and academic scholarship, moderated by John C. Itelson, Professor Emeritus, California State University Monterey Bay and Director of Instructional Technologies K20CETC, Friday, January 8 at 3:30 at Room N264 North Hall. Alex will also be on display at both Marvell booth locations, one in the eReader tech Zone in Central hall, and a main booth in South Hall. Credentialed press wishing to see the Alex at Lunch at Piero’s may request an invitation at www.lunchat.com/mediaregistration.html.

No Xperia X2 in the UK

Despite the UK launch party and press events (which we attended) we’ve now heard that the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 will NOT be sold through official channels in the UK. We already know that Vodafone have decided to drop the X2 as the delays in launching the device meant that it no longer fit in with their current or planned portfolio. I read that as meaning that it clashes with their iPhone launch!

No-X2

So the official response from Sony Ericsson is:

Sony Ericsson can confirm that the X2 will not be released by Vodafone in the UK. The delivery date of the product has slipped due to extended testing and the product, which was exclusive to Vodafone in the UK, no longer fits within their planned portfolio. The handset is available in other Sony Ericsson markets however. Sony Ericsson is disappointed not to make this phone available to consumers in the UK but in 2010 the company will be offering a number of innovative, stand-out products in the market.

I know that the X2 was not our favourite handset when it came to the review but I still think it’s a bit of a shame as quite a number of you were patiently waiting for this handset!

Sanyo announces their thinnest, lightest Xacti yet

If you have followed us for any length of time you’ll probably know that I’m quite a fan of the Sanyo Xacti range of camcorders. We’ve reviewed many models in the past and I actually record most of my unboxing videos on either my Xacti HD1010 or HD2000.

Sanyo have just announced a new Xacti model for 2010 which claims to be the smallest, lightest and thinnest dual camera, the VPC-CS1. Despite its diminutive size and weighing in at just 127 grams, about the same as a small mobile phone, it still offers features that you’d find on its bigger brothers such as 8 mega-pixel sensor 10x optical zoom, image stabiliser and Full HD recording.

I’ll definitely be wanting to get my hands on one of these at some point, it’ll be handy to have an HD camcorder that will fit easily in my pocket!

Check out the full press release below:

The new Sanyo Xacti VPC-CS1

The new Sanyo Xacti VPC-CS1

SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO) is pleased to announce the release of a new Full HD, Slim Type Dual Camera Xacti, VPC-CS1, available in February, 2010.

The Dual Camera series aims to provide customers with more enjoyable video experiences, by offering cameras that allow users to easily capture both photos and videos in daily life, rather than devices that are merely used to record important events. By utilizing a convenient video format that can be easily handled on PC and Internet environments, and even on home TVs, these cameras are more than just hardware for capturing, viewing, and saving images. They are convenient products for sharing videos online, on blogs or on other multi-media sites, and they are able to easily import images to portable media devices. The VPC-CS1 is undergoing certification to be compatible with iFrame, a next generation video format that has been designed to allow users to easily import, edit and share high quality video. SANYO is offering new ways to enjoy images after they are captured, and the Dual Cameras have been well received by consumers all over the world.

Now, SANYO has introduced a new model with a much greater degree of portability in a compact, lightweight and slim design, in order to expand the use of Full HD cameras. It is a new style of video camera that can record events and occasions as well as capture unforgettable scenes or single frames from daily life in Full HD, just as easily as taking a snapshot.

*2 SANYO Xacti "Full HD" means data recorded at 1920 (horizontal) x 1080 (vertical) pixels

Main Features

1. New style of Dual Camera with the world’s smallest, lightest and thinnest super-slim*1 body

– Product development for the series has been carried out with an

emphasis on a compact design that can be taken anywhere and anytime,

using the concept of a handy device for recording the moments of daily life.

– In order to make the new models even more compact than previous

models, SANYO has developed a slim sensor module and a new super slim lens.

– With its compact size (approx. 126 cc in volume), lightweight design

approx. 5 oz), and slim body (1.06″ in thickness) for superior portability, the VPC-CS1 is a new style of video camera that will radically expand the situations where it can be used.

– The original vertical ergonomic style enables slim body with usability*3

*3 Results from collaborative research on the relationship between thickness of the grip and physical burden with Professor. Katsunuma and Professor. Simomura at Humanomics Section, Department of Design Science, Graduate School of Technology, Chiba University

2. Easily captures beautiful Full HD*2 videos

– Not only it features a super slim and compact body, but also the VPC-CS1 can capture Full HD videos with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels.

– The video format used for this model is “MPEG-4 AVC / H.264,” which is easy to use on PC and Internet environments, as it is a single file format, similar to the one used for still photos.

“MPEG-4 AVC / H.264” is fully supported by the latest Windows® OS, “Windows 7”*4, which was launched in October 2009.

– Consequently, video files are displayed in the same thumbnail format as still picture files, and they can also be played back directly with Windows Media Player, and editable with Windows Live Movie Maker*5, and are Device Stage compatible. This makes the files even more convenient for use on computers.

To enhance its versatility, the VPC-CS1 is undergoing official certification to support iFrame*6, a next generation video format that has been designed to allow users to easily import, edit and share high quality video. This format enables the camcorder function to record in the same format used for editing on a computer, dramatically speeding up the processes of importing, editing and sharing movies across multiple platforms and devices.

iFrame is a computer-friendly format, and can be used with both Mac and PC compatible applications due to the use of standards-based technologies such as H.264, AAC, and MP4.

When combined with iMovie*6 in this capture mode, it is possible to realize even greater convenience in the procedure of capturing, uploading to a computer, editing, and sharing.

*4 Windows is a registered trademark or trademark of Microsoft Corporation in the United States and other countries.

The official name of Windows is the Microsoft Windows Operating System.

*5 Downloadable from the Microsoft Corporation website.

*6 iMovie is a trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. The iFrame logo and the iFrame symbol are trademarks of Apple Inc. Compatibility pending official certification.

3. “Sound Zoom” function enables clear sound recordings according to the scene

Sound is an important element for increasing the realism of videos. The VPC-CS1 has three microphone modes for recording clear sounds according to the scene and purpose.

(1) Wide Mode: Stereo recording with high channel separation.

(2) Gun Microphone Mode: Recording that focuses on sound emanating from the direction that the camera is pointing, while reducing sounds from other directions.

(3) Zoom Combination Mode: Automatically changes the directivity and sound gathering format according to the zoom positions.

4. Other Features

– Produces high-resolution 8-megapixel*6 images.

– Wide capture range from an advanced 10x zoom to a 38-mm wide angle lens.

– “Digital Image Stabilizer” *7 and “Face Chaser Function” *8 for videos

– “The new Digital Image Stabilizer,”*7 “Face Chaser Function”*8 and “Target a Color Function” *8*9 for photos

– “Sequential Shot” ensures capturing the perfect images.

– “Eye-Fi card compatibility”*10 enables automatic uploading of images to a computer.

– Mini HDMI terminal*11 for viewing high quality and clear images on TVs.

– Compatible with large-capacity recording media, SDXC memory card.

XBOX Natal coming late 2010

We saw project Natal demonstrated on the XBOX last year at E3 and I think it’s set to be a revolution in gaming, allowing you to play games and interact with the XBOX using nothing but your body.

Looks like Natal will launch later this year. We cant wait!!

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) – Microsoft announced Wednesday that "Project Natal" gesture recognition games, where the human body serves as the controller, will be released at the end of the year for the Xbox 360 videogame console.

"2010 is going to be the biggest year in Xbox history," Robbie Bach, the head of Microsoft’s entertainment and devices division, said in a speech which kicked off the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) here.

"This holiday 2010 you’ll be able to bring home Project Natal which will work with your existing Xbox 360 console," Bach told exhibitors and journalists at the gadget extravaganza.

"With Project Natal we are removing the last barrier to gaming — the controller," he said, providing "an entirely new but completely natural way to play.

Bach’s announcement followed a keynote speech by Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer, who said the US software giant has raked in 20 billion dollars from sales of 39 million Xbox 360s and more than 500 million associated games.

A prototype of Natal was unveiled to rave reviews by Microsoft at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) videogame industry show in Los Angeles in June.

The technology uses a 3-D camera and gesture recognition software to let people play videogames using natural body movements instead of handheld controllers.

Natal lets people play driving games, for example, by simply moving their hands as if turning a car steering wheel.

On-screen figures in boxing, skateboard, soccer and other sports titles mimic the body movements of real-world players.

Microsoft last year released a software kit for videogame makers interested in designing titles to take advantage of Natal’s capabilities.

British videogame icon Peter Molyneux, chief of Lionhead Studios, has described Natal as a "landmark in computer entertainment."

Sony announces Bloggie at CES

CES gets under way today in Las Vegas so expect to see plenty of new products announced over the next few days. Sony are the first to start firing over press releases to us this morning and a couple got my attention.

First of all Sony have just announced that they will expend their memory card offering and will start selling SDHC and MicroSDHC memory cards in 2 to 32GB capacities. Until now Sony only offered their Memory Stick memory card products.

Secondly Sony have announced a new HD camcorder called the ‘bloggie’. The thing that caught my eye about the bloggie is the Facebook and YouTube integration allowing you to easily share your content with friends and easily upload your clips and photos. There’s even a funky option to take 360 videos on one model which sounds interesting!

Check out the press release below, there will be plenty more over the next few days!

PM5 - Bloggie - 7 - lowres

The Sony bloggie

Sony bloggieT: upload in style

Fun and easy to use new Mobile HD Snap Cameras

· Slim, compact MHS-PM5/PM5K and MHS-CM5 capture 1920×1080 Full HD MP4 video clips and 5 megapixel still photos

· Eye-catching styling and premium features

· 270° swivel lens for perfect self portraits (PM5/PM5K only)

· Embedded PMB Portable software and built-in USB connector for quick, easy web uploads via PC and Macintosh

· Shoot and view amazing 360 Videos (MHS-PM5K only)

It’s all about capturing the moment. And it’s the spirit of fun, spontaneous still and video shooting and sharing that comes alive with the launch of bloggieT – a fresh concept in style-conscious, premium quality Mobile HD Snap Cameras by Sony.

The bloggieT makes its European debut with two exciting, new models. Both cameras make it brilliantly easy to grab crisp photos and video clips for quick, hassle-free sharing on the web.

Slipping effortlessly into a pocket or bag, the bloggieT MHS-PM5/PM5K and MHS-CM5 are perfect partners for parties, days out or trips away when you don’t want to miss the action.

Colourful, light and easy to carry, bloggieT is the fabulously spontaneous way to share memories, update your personal blog or post to social networking apps while you’re travelling. Just point and shoot: then walk into any internet café, hook up bloggieT and upload your life using the camera’s embedded PMB Portable software.

Both new bloggieT models are fun and simple to use. Press a button and shoot crisp, clear 5 megapixel still photos. Press another button and capture the moment in sparkling Full HD MP4 video.

The PM5/PM5K and CM5 can record both super-smooth 1280×720/60p video and high resolution Full HD 1920×1080/30p clips. On-board SteadyShot image stabilisation* cuts camera shake when you’re shooting handheld, and Face Detection fine-tunes camera settings for clear, captivating portraits.

*Available with 720/30p shooting mode only

Styled in a choice of four vibrant colour finishes, the PM5/PM5K features a rotating lens that swivels 270 degrees to capture life from any angle: get down low, aim high or record yourself. The bright, high resolution 6.0cm LCD screen shows camera settings in the bottom half of the display while you’re shooting. When you want to see the results, turn bloggieT horizontally and enjoy your clips and photos in screen-filling landscape format.

The PM5K also includes a special 360 Video lens adaptor that lets you experience incredible panoramic videos. Just slip on the adaptor and start shooting in 360 Video mode: there’s no need to make any other adjustments. bloggieT captures panoramic video as specially encoded files that can be ‘unwrapped’ for PC viewing using supplied PMB software and 360 Video Player application. It’s a completely new way of seeing the world from every angle.

Featuring ‘pistol grip’ vertical styling, the CM5 boasts a high-quality 5x optical zoom lens, plus a swivel 6.2cm LCD screen that flips out for comfortable shooting and viewing. The CM5 also sports an HDMI connector, letting you enjoy photos and Full HD clips on your BRAVIAT or any HD TV.

bloggieT includes everything you need to keep track of your digital lifestyle. After shooting, both cameras link directly to your PC or Mac via the built-in USB connector that tucks away snugly when not in use.

The embedded PMB Portable software launches automatically when bloggieT is connected to your PC or Mac, letting you view, select and upload clips to popular social apps and media sharing sites like PicasaT and YouTubeT. There’s no need to install any editing or file transfer software on the computer, making bloggieT ideal for use in any internet café while you’re travelling. You don’t even need to carry a charger with you: the camera’s battery is automatically charged while it’s connected to your computer via USB.

The simple integration for sharing content on Facebook® will also be available as a downloadable update to this software in spring. This complements the existing sharing capability with such sites as YouTubeT and PicasaT Web Albums. With the new version, users will have the ability to share photos and videos on Facebook® directly from PMB Portable software.

*Updates for PMB Portable software will be available for download from Apr 2010 onwards.

A slot for Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD/SDHC memory cards (sold separately) caters for users’ personal shooting preferences. There’s also a full range of optional accessories by Sony to help you get the best out of your bloggieT.

The bloggieT PM5, PM5K and CM5 Mobile HD Snap Cameras are available from Feburary 2010.

More Nexus One info

Obviously we spoke about the launch of the new Google phone, the Nexus One, yesterday and most sites seem to be awash with ‘news’ and speculation about its eventual availability.

nexus

I mentioned in my last post that the handset could be purchased SIM-free directly from Google (www.google.com/phone) for $529 and Google will ship to the UK. What seems like a reasonable deal, $529 equates to around £325 at the moment, there’s more to consider in the cost. Firstly you’ll have to add 6.5% sales TAX, then 17.5% VAT and UK import duty and finally a currently undisclosed shipping charge. So the cost of picking up the Nexus One from the USA is likely to be nearer to £500.

In terms of specification the Nexus isn’t going to be a slouch. Android 2.1, 1Ghz Qualcomm QSD 8250 CPU, 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 3.7-inch (diagonal) widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, trackball, GPS, accelerometer, digital compass, light and proximity sensors and a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash.

Sound good so far?

One thing that may disappoint you is that there will not be multi-touch functionality in the stock device. Seems a shame, and this has been put down to there being some kind of Apple patent in force in the USA with regard to multi-touch. Whether the European models will have this enabled by default we are not yet sure but we understand that the hardware is certainly capable and that the Android 2.1 OS is capable, it’s simply that the bundled applications, such as maps and the web browser, have the multi-touch feature disabled so I’m sure that this could be somehow enabled later.

Google Nexus One Specification:

  • Height: 119mm
  • Width: 59.8mm
  • Depth: 11.5mm
  • Weight: 130 grams w/battery
  • 3.7-inch (diagonal) widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen, 800 x 480 pixels
  • 5 megapixels camera
  • Autofocus from 6cm to infinity
  • 2X digital zoom
  • LED flash
  • User can include location of photos from phone’s AGPS receiver
  • Video captured at 720×480 pixels at 20 frames per second or higher, depending on lighting conditions
  • UMTS Band 1/4/8 (2100/AWS/900)
  • HSDPA 7.2Mbps
  • HSUPA 2Mbps
  • GSM/EDGE (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz)

  • Audio playback: Up to 20 hours

Nexus One officially announced!

As we mentioned the other day, Google held their Nexus One press conference today and officially announced the device.

nexus

If you are in the US you’ll be able to pick the handset up on Verizon some time in the spring and will set you back $529.00 SIM-free. For those of us in Europe, we should have the device at the same time as the US but it will be exclusive to Vodafone, certainly to begins with, but again no news on the cost.

Also, according to reports on Engadget, Google is openly suggesting that you buy Motorola’s (as in, not HTC’s) Droid/Milestone now if you just can’t wait a day longer for some of that Android goodness. Strange when you consider that HTC have built the Nexus One hardware!

If you want to place an order for the Nexus One you can do so for $529 and they will ship to the UK too! www.google.com/phone

We’ll post more news as we get it!

The 7.2mm Walkman announced

We’ve reviewed a number of media players from the Sony Walkman range in the past and have always been impressed with them for their sheer sound quality. I was intrigued to see the following press release today where Sony have announced a new model in the Walkman range that’s just 7.2mm thick (or thin).

FALCON_BLACK_small

High-spec WALKMAN® A845 is just 7.2mm thin

  • Ultra-slim (only 7.2mm) and easy to carry
  • Big, bright 7.1cm (2.8″) wide OLED display
  • High quality listening with S-Master Digital Amplifier and Digital Clear Audio technologies
  • Digital Noise cancelling with supplied NC headphones cancels 98.0% (approx.) of ambient noise
  • Enjoy SD video playback on connected Televisions
  • Long audio playback time up to 29 hours
  • New Battery Care mode for extended battery lifespan

Just 7.2mm slim and weighing only 62g (without headphones), the WALKMAN® A845 Video MP3 Player by Sony proves that less really is more. Slipping easily into a back pocket or bag, it’s a great way to keep your favourite music tracks, podcasts and videos with you to enjoy any time.

Despite its chic, slender lines, the thinnest WALKMAN® yet is a true heavyweight when it comes to legendary sound and video quality by Sony.

The player’s front panel is dominated by a big, bright 7.1cm (2.8″) OLED screen. Delivering superb colours, high contrast ratio, wide viewing angle and super-fast response time, it’s a great way to enjoy online movie store downloads, clips from sharing sites, album artwork and digital photos. A new Scene Scroll view lets you browse quickly through longer videos that are displayed as a series of thumbnail images. Find the scene you want, press play and the action picks up at the moment you’re looking for. You can also scroll through cover art images to effortlessly track down the album you want to hear.

Want an even bigger picture? Connect the WALKMAN® A845 to your television via the optional A/V output cable (WMC-NWV10) and enjoy videos on the big screen. Pictures are delivered to your TV set in SD format (720 x 480) at a silk-smooth 30fps frame rate (excludes some DRM content).

As you’d expect from Sony, it’s sheer audio quality that sets the WALKMAN® A845 apart from other MP3 players. S-Master Digital Amplifier technology assures rich, lifelike ultra-low distortion sound. Already featured on Sony hi-fi and home theatre products, S-Master amplification puts you centre-stage in the studio or concert hall while maintaining crisp, clear sound.

Listening is further enhanced with unique Clear Audio technologies from Sony for a dynamic, detail-packed soundstage. Clear Stereo reduces leakage between left and right channels, while Clear Bass delivers powerful, controlled low-end frequencies without distortion. In addition, DSEE Sound Enhancement  Technology ensures smooth, detailed reproduction of high-frequency information that’s typically lost when the original CD-quality music source is compressed as an MP3 file.

Plug in the high-quality 13.5mm EX vertical in-ear headphones and immerse yourself in a blissful world of beautiful WALKMAN® sound without intrusions. Digital Noise Cancelling cuts approximately 98.0%*1 of ambient sound, using advanced processing to detect and filter external noise without impairing audio quality. Three different profile settings let you enjoy optimised noise reduction, whether you’re onboard a plane, bus/train or in the office. With the supplied adaptor, air travellers can connect WALKMAN® directly to the plane’s AV system and enjoy their in-flight entertainment with digital noise cancelling provided by WALKMAN®.

Importing music, video, photos and playlists is quick and fuss-free, with simple drag-and-drop transfer from your PC’s media folder or via iTunes 9.0 using supplied Content Transfer software.  Certain MPEG1 and other downloaded files can be played back on WALKMAN® when converted via Content Transfer. A wide range of major music and video formats are supported, including rights-managed WMA and WMV files.

The WALKMAN® A845 lets you listen for longer, with a generous 29 hours*3 listening time from a single charge. Battery life with video playback is 9 hours*4 – more than enough to keep you entertained on those long journeys. There’s also a new optional Battery Care function that optimises overall battery lifespan by limiting charging levels to 90% of maximum. The home menu can be personalised with a choice of pre-installed wallpaper designs. Alternatively, add an individual touch by choosing your own favourite photo as wallpaper.

The WALKMAN® NWZ-A845 Video MP3 Player with 16GB storage capacity is available from February 2010.

A range of co-ordinated accessories includes the Sony SRS-NWGU50 speaker system: dock your WALKMAN® to enjoy rich, powerful sound at home with deep bass. There’s also a choice of leather (CKL-NWA840) and silicon cases (CKM-NWA840) to protect WALKMAN® from dust and scratches.

Let see if we can get our hands on one of these for review soon!

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 goes on sale

It’s been a few months since we first saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 at the launch event but after a few delays, and according to GSMArena, the X2 finally goes on sale.

x2

Well we say it has ‘Gone on Sale’ but other than having a listed price of about £445 (490 euros) we cant find anyone actually selling the X2 as yet and enquiries made to our usual sources have drawn a blank. We’ll keep trying and let you know if we do find a stockist.

We unboxed the X2 and posted our X2 review already but it’s not our favourite device, personally I don’t feel that it’s that significantly different to the X1 despite being a year down the line from the X1. However, judging by some of the questions and comments over on the forum it does look like the X2 is going to be fairly popular. So if you are going to splash your cash on the X2 let us know what attracts you to the handset and once you get your hands on it let us know what you think too!
