Nexus One Multitouch video

Since its launch almost two weeks ago there has been lots of discussion about the Nexus One and whether or not it supports multitouch. There seems to be some confusion about multitouch, it’s believed that Google/HTC did not implement multitouch on the Nexus One out-of-the-box due to some kind of patent related legal wrangle with Apple. Not sure if that’s true or not but sure sounds plausible.

As most will know, the Android OS itself certainly supports multitouch and we we’re pretty confident that the Nexus One hardware supported it. Rumour had it that multitouch support had been removed from the US version of the Nexus One, the version that’s shipping now, all together and that we would have to wait until a UK or European version was launched, possibly by a carrier, to see multitouch added.

However, I can confirm that the Nexus One hardware and Android OS on the Nexus One definitely supports multitouch! As you can see from my little video demo below it’s simply that the apps pre-installed on the Nexus One are not multitouch capable, so the pre-installed maps and web browser for example do not support it. BUT, if you want a multitouch web browser there is an option, check out the video below:

So if you are looking for a multitouch web browser you can grab the Dolphin Browser from Android Market, it’s even a free app and not a bad little browser either and not only offers pinch to zoom but also allows you to configure some of your own gesture based swipes.

Now the hope is that we’ll be able to get our hands on a multitouch enabled version of Google Maps that we can install on the Nexus One and hopefully an image browser too.

Thanks to my mate Paul from MoDaCo for letting me know.

Don’t forget to also check out my extended Nexus One unboxing and demo video. It’s a pretty long one so grab a cup of coffee before you start! 🙂

Skype for iPhone updated

Skype and Google Voice are 2 main enemies of mobile operators aka carriers. We know it because we are going to Mobile World Congress 2010 where many companies are showing “solutions for operators to combat competition from Skype and Google Voice” – as they put it in their pre-announcements.

Skype for iPhone just got upgraded and new features are:

LG GW620 Android coming to the UK

The LG GW620 is reportedly coming to both T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile here in the UK.

InTouch Max 2

LG GW620 with slide out QWERTY

The device which runs Android 1.5, Cupcake, will be known as the INTOUCH MAX. Running this early version of Android is not the best news but hardware wise it doesn’t look too bad. With Motorola recently releasing the Dext and soon to be releasing the BackFlip its nice to see LG are bringing some competition to the market.

The slide out five row QWERTY keyboard certainly looks impressive and not too dissimilar to that on the HTC Touch Pro2. It will however be smaller as the INTOUCH MAX screen is 3 inches.

The INTOUCH MAX has not yet made its way to the T-Mobile website but it is on the Virgin Mobile one, although showing as out of stock. The device will be available on Virgin for free for as little as £22.00 per month and as well as minutes this deal also includes unlimited texts and internet, although I’m not sure of their terms and conditions with regards to fair usage.

Here’s a quick run down on the LG GW620 INTOUCH MAX specifications:

  • 3G Network: HSDPA 900 / 2100
  • Dimensions: 109 x 54.5 x 15.9 mm
  • Weight:139 g
  • Display: TFT resistive touchscreen, 256K colours
  • Size: 320 x 480 pixels, 3.0 inches
  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • Accelerometer sensor for auto-rotate
  • Internal Memory: 150 MB
  • microSD, up to 32GB
  • EDGE    Class 10, 236.8 kbps
  • 3G    HSDPA 7.2 Mbps, HSUPA
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
  • Bluetooth: with A2DP
  • Camera: 5 MP, 2560 x 1920 pixels, autofocus, LED flash
  • Android OS, v1.5 (Cupcake)
  • Messaging: SMS (threaded view), MMS, Email, IM, Push Email
  • GPS,  A-GPS
  • Document viewer (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF)
  • Battery: Standard battery, Li-Po 1500 mAh

Doesn’t sound too shabby does it?

As soon as we get further news we will be sure to let you know.

Full 3G coverage now available with Vodafone’s Sure Signal

Vodafone UK is helping to improve in-home mobile phone coverage for Brits by launching  the Vodafone Sure Signal (£50) – a unique plug-in box, which gives a great 3G signal in the home.

Vodafone UK customers can now have the Vodafone Sure Signal, the small plug-in box that significantly improves  mobile phone signal in their homes and small offices for just £50.

Quick and easy to install, plugging straight into any home or office broadband line with a download speed of at least 1 MB per second, Vodafone Sure Signal brings customers better and more reliable 3G coverage indoors and works with all 3G handsets. Customers no longer need to worry about missed calls on their mobiles due to inconsistent indoor coverage and will be able to take advantage of the full range of Vodafone services via their handset anywhere in the home or office.

“No other network in the UK can ensure a great mobile phone signal in the home, because the Sure Signal is unique to Vodafone,” says Guy Laurence, Vodafone UK CEO. “Customers tell us it is life changing.  If they live or work in a basement for example, the only way they may be able to get consistent mobile coverage could be with a Vodafone Sure Signal.”

Recent research by Vodafone UK highlights the importance of indoor mobile phone coverage. One in five Brits say that they have missed an important event or occasion because of a lack of signal.  1 in 50 would even consider moving house for better indoor coverage.

Up to 32 people can be registered to use a Vodafone Sure Signal and four people can use it at any one time. Customers can now add or change their Sure Signal users in real-time with Vodafone’s new online service.

Vodafone Sure Signal is available at www.vodafone.co.uk/suresignal for individual customers, www.vodafone.co.uk/businesssuresignal for small business customers and by visiting your local Vodafone store.

Developers writing for iPhone 4.0

iPhone_OS_4.0_270x198

Most are speculating great things for the June announcement however some believe that the 4.0 firmware will be with us sooner than that. Here is further news to fuel the fire for 4.0 arriving on the iPhone sooner rather than later.

iPhone OS 4.0 is imminent. That’s the conclusion I drew from an e-mail I received from a prominent app developer Friday, at least, before hearing from the developer that it was a typo.

The message included the following snippet: "Just wanted to give you a heads up that we’ve submitted an updated app for the new iPhone OS 4.0 software." (The developer later acknowledged that it meant to refer to a 4.0 version of the app itself, not OS 4.0.)

Nexus One drops in price

nexus-one-hand-post-img Negative press? Slow sales? Or does it just not cut it? I would agree with any of those statements have watched this device in action.  However, Google has decided to lop off an chunk of the price tag. Might make take some of the sting out the extra price stapled on with the import duty.
If you have already bought it then don’t be worrying as Google are passing on the saving to existing users also.

The pricing option now appears to be $529 unlocked

So now it’s tempting, very tempting.

Motorola Milestone Competition Winner

The competition has been running since the 26th of December and has seen literally thousands of entries. It has taken me the some time to get all of the entries in to one list in Excel and as with other competitions we simply use a random number generator from the internet to randomly select the winner.

So it’s time to announce our winner. Our random number has selected forum member ‘Justin’ who entered via the forum. I’ve already sent you an email Justin but please do get in touch with me to arrange delivery of your Motorola Milestone.

Please join me in congratulating our winner. I’m sorry that not everyone can be a winner but if any of the handset manufacturers wants to give me several thousand handsets to give away I’d be happy to do that! 🙂

As the last few competitions have been so very successful there will definitely be more soon, just keep an eye on the site or Twitter for announcements.
