The bigger picture on the iPad 12.9

12_9_ipad_ipad_4_mini_light-800x450Apparently an unnamed official for an Apple supplier in Korea told The Korea Times by phone that Apple’s local first-tier display supplier is currently producing a 12.9-inch Retina display for a new “maxi” iPad slated to launch early next year, possibly as early as March. This panel is being manufactured by the supplier’s plant in Korea, the source added.

Rumours of a larger iPad have been floating around for a few months. Even the Wall Street Journal jumped on the rumour bandwagon back in July, reporting that Apple was testing larger screens for iPhone and iPad devices, including a 13-inch prototype iPad, to offer a better choice of products for the end user.

“The 12.9-inch iPad will have improved picture quality. As the Apple partner intends to boost its lineup for displays that have almost ultra high-definition (UHD) quality, the upcoming iPad will provide very clear quality similar to that of UHD,” said the official.

BlackBerry Not Working on iPad Specific BBM

bbm-iphoneSince BlackBerry resumed the BBM roll-out to iOS and Android devices, it has been downloaded tens of millions of times and has been consistently at the top of the app download charts.

BlackBerry recently spoke to Slashgear and Andrew Bocking confirmed that BlackBerry are working on a new version of BBM specifically for WiFi-only iPod’s and iPad’s. At the moment users must have a cellular capable device in order to register and set up BBM. This is a situation that BlackBerry are looking to resolve and the update is said to be coming any time now. This will mean that BBM does not have to be tied to a specific mobile number.

However, there’s no news from BlackBerry for WiFi only versions of BBM for WiFi only Android tablets but one would hope that if there’s to be an iPad and iPod WiFi version then an Android version should not be too far behind.

No iPad specific BBM

Perhaps one piece of news that may disappoint iPad owners, though, is that BlackBerry are said NOT to be working on an iPad specific version of BBM, one that would make better use of the larger display. At the moment BBM will work on iPad devices but just a larger version of the iPhone version. iPad users have been hoping for an iPad specific version that was more akin to the interface and layout from the PlayBook.

Hopefully BlackBerry will change their mind!

iPad Air Explodes in Australian Vodafone Shop

iPad Air ExplodesNot a good headline for Apple. In a Vodafone store in the city of Canberra, Australia, one of Apple’s new flagship iPad Air’s explodes during shopping hours leading to a full scale evacuation of the store and requiring the fire brigade to be be called to extinguish the fire.

According to several reports the store filled with smoke and sparks flew as the iPad literally exploded while on charge.

No official word from Apple as yet but it is believed that a faulty charging circuit was the culprit as the lithium polymer batteries used in the iPad, and common in a variety of other electronic products, are predisposed to exploded when over charged.

Worrying perhaps but considering the 100’s of thousand iPad devices sold each year having just one recorded explosion isn’t a huge cause for concern just yet as this is the first such recorded incident.

Apple announces the iPad Air

ipad airAlso today, during their press conference held in California, Apple have announced the new iPad Air.

Thinner, lighter and more powerful that ever before, the iPad Air has a 9.7″ retina display. A much thinner, 43% thinner bezel surrounds the screen and at 7.5mm thick it’s 20% thinner than the iPad 4 and weighs in at just 1 pound! The lights full size tablet in the world!

Having the same A7 CPU that we first saw in the iPhone 5s there’s also the M7 motion chip from the new iPhone.

The iPad Air goes on sale starting November 1st, from just $499, the same price as the existing iPad 4

The new iPad Air is unbelievably thin and light. And yet it’s so much more powerful and capable. With the A7 chip, advanced wireless, and great apps for productivity and creativity — all beautifully integrated with iOS 7 — iPad Air lets you do more than you ever imagined. In more places than you ever imagined.

iPad has always been about the display. And that’s even more true with iPad Air. Because we reduced the width of the device, along with the bezels on the sides of the display. But the size of the stunning Retina display is exactly the same. So your content fills your view more than ever. With a 2048-by-1536 resolution and over 3.1 million pixels, photos and videos pop with detail and text looks razor sharp. Pixels are indiscernible. So all you see is what you want to see.

The A7 chip takes iPad to new heights of power and speed. Thanks to the A7 chip, apps run faster. Games are more responsive. And everything you do with iPad Air feels quicker, because it is quicker. Up to twice as quick, in fact. But that’s just the beginning. It also supports OpenGL ES version 3.0, enabling detailed graphics and visual effects once possible only on desktop computers and game consoles. And the A7 chip features 64-bit architecture, opening the door for even more robust and powerful apps. Which means even more possibilities for what you can do with iPad Air.

Apple confirms iPad press event 22nd October

apple ipad 5 eventThis afternoon Apple announced a press event to be held on the 22nd October in San Francisco. Press invitations have already been sent out to the event in which we’re expecting to see the new iPad 5 and iPad mini 2 unveiled but the tag line in the invitation “We still have a lot to cover” possibly suggests that there may be more in the line up for the day.

Certainly the smart money is pointing to the two new iPad models both of which are expected to have the Apple’s Touch ID fingerprint sensor introduced in the iPhone 5S as well as a version of the 64-bit A7 chip.

The hope from us is that the iPad mini 2 will have a retina display but there have been many rumours about this over the past few weeks that seem to equally say yay and nay, all will be revealed next week.

Other possible attractions at the event are OS X Mavericks that went GM earlier this month and the Mac Pro which has been teasing us for several months.

We’ll be coving the event from 6PM BST on the 22nd October.

Apple readying iPad 5 & iPad mini 2 launch

Apple-iPad-5Apple are set to hold their new iPad event on October 22nd, according to various sources on the interwebs. Later than the October 17th date that had previously been touted, the event date now looks to be more definite.

It’s likely that the event will see various announcements, certainly we anticipate the iPad 5 and iPad mini 2, but then there’s the matter of OS X Mavericks that went Gold just recently too.

Furthermore, Apple have been teasing us with images and video of their new Mac Pro, so could we see this new beast released at the same time? Certainly the hopes are that each of these new products will be available pre-Christmas.

As we near the launch date several new high-quality images of the iPad 5 have surfaced. These clearly show the reduced bezel size on the new iPad which is now similar to the iPad mini in that respect. Furthermore, it seems increasingly likely that both the iPad 5 and the iPad mini 2 will have the fingerprint unlock technology from the iPhone 5s and a suggestion that the iPad 5 will have an A7X chip, slightly different from the A7 chip existing in the iPhone 5s.

iPad 5 leaked images and video

iPad 5 leakedWe’re expecting an Apple event sometime in October where we’ll get to see the new iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2. However, if you are as impatient as we are you’ll be pleased to know that images and hands on videos of the anticipated next-gen iPads have already leaked out.

The iPad 5 leaked images and video appear to show just the aluminium back panels of the new iPads but do also reveal that the iPad 5 will be smaller, thinner and lighter than the iPad 4 and seems to be a slightly different form fact too. The iPad Mini 2 appears to be pretty much the same size and shape as the existing mini so expect all the changes to be on the inside!

Both the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 are expected to feature the same fingerprint scanner as featured on the new iPhone 5s as well as updated cameras but neither appears to reveal a built-in flash.

The hope from us us that we’ll see a retina display on the iPad Mini 2 as well as improved battery life and CPU performance on both models. I suspect that both will have the new A7 chip in there too.

So check out the video from SW-BOX.COM below and see if that give you an appetite for some new Apple tablet goodness!
