Motorola Xplay on the way

moto_xplay_2.pngIn Phablet news a 6.3-inch device called the Xplay from Motorola is actually prepping their own large-sized phablet device, which will be called the Xplay. Supposedly it will be sporting a 6.3-inch display at a full HD 1080p and will launch in 2014. That’s not all we have though. It has been indicated that Motorola is also already working on the next progeny of the Droid Ultra. This one will be called the Droid Quantum and is scheduled for sometime in 2014 as well.

Not a single other relevant piece of information was shared on this subject, but we will keep an eye out for it now. Perhaps we will see something pop up at one of the first trade shows of next year like CES in January.

Nexus 5 prices

Phone Nexus 5 pricesArena has apparently scooped a rumour of the price and release for the Nexus 5. The name Nexus 5 seems to be used exclusively and nothing else suggested which might be hints to it being rubbish of true depending on your stand point. The name Nexus 5 indicates either the fifth incarnation of the Nexus phone line or a 5” screen. At any rate the next Nexus will present problems  if called the Nexus 6 and especially a Nexus 7.

As suspected there would be two variants, a 16GB LG Nexus 5 featuring a 2300mAh battery and will be priced at $299. The 32GB LG Nexus 5 will be powered by a 3000mAh cell and will be priced at $399. The Google Nexus 4 was $299 for the 8GB unlocked model when first launched, while the 16GB model was $349. Both of those units carried a 2100mAh cell.

What say ye? Nonsense, an educated guess or on the money?

Samsung developing its answer to Google Glass

Google GlassSeems that everyone wants to get their hands on Google Glass and the massive demands has apparently been too much for Samsung to ignore and rumour has it that the Korean giant has decided to work on its own “Gear Glass” hardware.

In a tweet from Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin, he states:

Samsung developing own version of Google Glass. We will see it (probably) around april-may under Gear Glass brand.

There are no further details as yet but it certainly would make sense for Samsung to release another wearable product to compliment their Galaxy Gear Smartwatch.

According to retailers, the demand for the Smartwatch 2 has been so high that they are unable to satisfy the existing demand and the back-order list is growing daily.

LG Z to launch with flexible display

LG Z flexibleHot on the heels of Samsung’s announcement last week that they would release a special edition Galaxy Note 3 with curved OLED display, LG have countered with news that they will be taking this a step futher and releasing their own smartphone, the LG Z, with a flexible OLED display.

According to ZDNet Korea, LG leaked them details of the new LG Z which is slated to arrive later this month.
Whist it is understood that the LG Z itself will not be a flexible device, merely a smartphone with flexible display there are advantages to that arrangement in that the screen is transformed from being a typical brittle, fragile unit to something with a little more strength and ‘give’.
Little else is known about the LG Z at the moment, but we’ll keep our eagle eyes open for more news…

Android 4.3 rumoured updates and insane battery life

Android-4-3-Samsung-Galaxy-S4The folks at PocketNow have a video up detailing a ton of new features and improvements on Android 4.3. The video uses a Nexus 4 equipped with the new OS from Google, and amongst the many new features comes a huge battery life improvement. Read on and check out the video to find all the details.

  1. Auto-complete in the Dialler – this is a clever function that makes you wonder why they haven’t thought of it before. The Android 4.3 stock dialler has been upgraded to include auto-complete within the dialler itself to help you get the right number more quickly. It’s important to note that some devices have this function already, but that was thanks to the specific OEM. Stock Android didn’t have that feature until now.
  2. New Emoji Keyboard – Google included a this new keyboard as an option for all those super-texters out there who like to add the context of "tone of voice/facial expressions" to their messages with more cute emoticons. To get to it from the messaging app you need to long-press on the space bar.
  3. Bluetooth 4.0 LE – This is one we heard about previously, but it’s still pretty cool regardless. The newest version of Bluetooth promises much better power efficiency, and should drain your battery far less. This new version also includes a greater range of compatible devices. (This wasn’t truly confirmed in the video, but the Bluetooth SIG has confirmed it.)
  4. Improvements in the Camera App – "The camera in Android 4.3 fine-tunes the way the previous version worked by placing the items in an arc with the selected item clearly called out above your finger. Also, rotating the device from portrait to landscape and back while in camera mode is now almost instantaneous."
  5. Better Performance – Apparently, the Nexus 4 is a great deal more responsive when using Android 4.3. It wasn’t really sluggish before, but supposedly the difference is noticeable. This is borne out in synthetic benchmarks as well.
  6. Significantly Improved Battery Life – Normally with this phone, Android 4.2 offers about 4-6 hours of heavy use before you need to recharge. With Android 4.3, the user was supposedly able to jump that all the way up to 25+ hours!

It’s exciting to think that software tweaks could result in such dramatic improvements. We probably should remain a bit sceptical, but that should only temper our excitement a little bit. Luckily, we are likely to hear all about Android 4.3 tomorrow during Sundar Pichai’s press event and the probable launch of the next-gen Nexus 7.

HTC One Mini on its way

One_Mini We love a good rumour but here’s one that’s starting to gather momentum thanks to information reportedly leaked by a Taiwanese parts supplier.

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a possible mini version of the extremely popular HTC One and other sources cite that the HTC One Mini will have a smaller, 4.3″ 720p display but will externally look much the same as its bigger brother.

HTC One Mini, it is believed, will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 dual-core chip clocked at 1.4GHz with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. We hope that it will still have the Boomsound speakers and 4MP ultrapixel camera.

More as we get it.

A new Nexus 7 just round the corner

nexus-7-21The next generation of the Google Nexus 7 will likely be hitting the streets pretty soon. It was just spotted at the FCC with Android 4.3 and a couple different radio versions in tow (GSM and WIFi). Specs for the device are even available through some indirect sleuthing by several websites. The way it was determined that the tablet at the FCC is actually the Nexus 7 required some deductive reasoning and several different puzzle pieces. I won’t bore you with the rundown, but here are the specs:

  • 7-inch display (1920 x 1200 or 1080p) resolution
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064)
  • Adreno 320 GPU
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 32GB of storage
  • 5-megapixel camera
  • 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera
  • NFC
  • Wi-Fi 80211n with dual-badn
  • LTE
  • (possibly) Qi wireless charging
  • profile: 7.5 to 8mm
