New rumours Google eyeballing HTC for another Nexus

HTC-TabletThis rumour has been heard before, however this is supposedly “supply chain” intel to corroborate them. According to this newest report, Google is still considering teaming up with HTC on a new Android Tablet. This may be an 8-inch device. The second part of this rumour suggests that Google is considering eliminating the Nexus line of Android tablets altogether after this device.

There are two possible reasons why Google could be using HTC instead of Asus for a future tablet. First, Google is apparently looking for a new outer design for the Nexus tablet. Second, according to the report, Asus has not been very motivated to try and push the Nexus tablet line, instead they are trying to build up its own brand cache. Ironically, this is exactly what Google wanted. They specifically put restrictions on how Asus could push the Nexus line. This was meant to spur the company to create its own line of Android products.

Apparently, Google’s whole purpose with the Nexus tablets was simply to jump-start the industry so that Android tablets could compete effectively with the Apple iPad. Since that has been mostly successful, Google is considering pulling back to let the various OEMs run the show now. Asus is a good example of the outcome that Google was aiming for.

Are Google thinking about launching their own network?

2014-03-15This question recently appeared on a Google Opinion sparking the rumour that Google might be launching their own network. Perhaps as an virtual network operator on a larger network however as they have dug in the wiring for Google Fibre is does not rule out the option that they might go to the expense of erecting their own towers.

The best news here is that Google would be charging less than the other networks as you can only use a Nexus device on their network. A master stroke for all those who love a Nexus, and lets face it, there are a lot.

At any rate, this is merely a rumour now. Gauging from public reaction Google might not both. For us little folk in the UK, we would be unlikely to see a Google network for a least 1,000 years.

Google Nexus 8 rumours

Nexus7-9530We have a Google Nexus 8 Android tablet rumour to today. Apparently a new report sheds additional light on some of the hardware details of this potential device. Whilst there isn’t too much information there is enough to start dreaming and getting excited. Here are the proposed specs:

Google Nexus 8 Tablet Specification:

  • 8-Inch Display
  • Intel Atom “Moorefield” 64-bit 2.3GHz quad-core processor with enhanced performance memory
  • PowerVR G6430 GPU
  • Android 4.5

Supposedly, Google will announce the tablet later this year and it will be one of the first devices running their next iteration of Android, which will supposedly be 4.5. Using Intel hardware would be a substantial departure from the norm for Google, but we wouldn’t put it past them. The Nexus 10 is due a refresh first and with any luck we might just see version 4.5 on that and a version 5 arriving with a Nexus 8. One can only hope.

iPhone 6 going bezel-less?

iphone 6There are plenty of rumours about the forthcoming iPhone 6 out there at the moment, some of which also contradict others. However, there does seem to be a growing consensus that the iPhone 6 may have a larger, bezel-less screen.

Certainly there have been suggestions that the iPhone 6 could come in 4.7″ and 5.7″ variants which also seems to be becoming more credible.

The latest rumour to suggests two versions of the iPhone 6 comes from the South China Morning Post who claims an Apple insider has revealed details and that the new iPhone 6 will go on sale in September, later than many industry analysts believe.

It has also been suggested that Apple may ditch the existing Gorilla Glass screens in favour of Sapphire screens which are claimed to be virtually “indestructible”.

The last rumour, for today at least, relates to the iPhone 6 cameras. Claims from the news site Nikkei, say that Apple and Sony are in negotiations at the moment and that Sony may in fact be the supplier of the front and rear facing camera components for the iPhone 6. There have been further claims that the rear camera could be a 13 megapixel shooter and have a built in optical image stabilizer.

HTC M8 Mini mentioned in new leak

HTC-One-Mini-900x600Only yesterday we were talking about the anticipated replacement for the HTC One, the HTC M8. Today there’s a new rumour about the M8’s little brother, the HTC M8 Mini.

In a tweet yesterday the omnipresent tipster, @evleaks, posted the following tweet:

HTC M8 mini (mem_ul): SD400 (1.4GHz x4), 4.5″, 720p, 1GB/16GB (+microSD), 13MP/5MP, a/b/g/n/ac, BT4.0, KK4.4.2, Sense6.0, buttons on screen.

Claiming that the HTC M8 Mini will have Quad-core Snapdragon 400 at 1.4GHz, 4.5″ 720p display, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage, MicroSD card slot, 13MP primary camera and 5MP front facing camera, Android KitKat 4.4.2, HTC Sense 6.0 and Wifi 802.11a/b/g/n/ac.

This sounds like it’ll be a pretty awesome phone in its own right and the 13MP camera perhaps calls in to question the claims from some sources that the M8 itself will have ‘only a 4MP sensor’.

However, in my mind a device with 4.5-inch display is really pushing it to be called mini!

More on the HTC M8

HTC M8Things are definitely hotting up around the device that’s set to supersede HTC One, the HTC M8. Almost every day we’re seeing a new leaked image or screen shot of the phone that’s soon set to become HTC’s new flagship device.

This week we saw images of the HTC M8 which appear to confirm the claims that HTC have done away with the on screen buttons in favour of capacitive buttons below the screen. However, other images, including the ones in this post, seem to show a lack of both on-screen and off-screen buttons which is one reason why many are calling the current round of leaked images ‘fake’.

Other images released this week reveal the new look of HTC Sense 6 and, in particular, how Blinkfeed has just become a whole lot sexier.

Moto Maker Motorola Android Tablet

motorola-xoom_wifi-angleHow does a Moto Maker customized Motorola Android tablet sound to you? That’s the idea that Motorola is supposedly mulling over right now. Here’s a quote with the details,

Motorola Android Tablet Quote:

CEO Dennis Woodside unveiled in a recent interview that not only Motorola is considering a tablet, but that Moto Maker, the service used to customize the Moto X, might branch out: “we are looking at tablets. A lot of people have asked us to build a tablet using Moto Maker, to customize their tablet. There might be a day we do that, but the bigger opportunity for us is the five billion people without smartphones,” the CEO added. Of course, Motorola’s top priority, aside from the five billion people without smartphones, is, as Woodside puts it, mobile internet: “We have to decide and convince consumers we stand for something and what we are focused on is the mobile internet.”

It doesn’t sound like he is too committed to the tablet plan, but that could obviously change at a moment’s notice. What do you guys think of this? If they had the same competitive pricing and innovative features found in the Moto X and/or Moto G could Motorola surge back into a strong Android tablet position?

An new Nexus 10 tablet gets the @evleaks treatment

Nexus 10Yet another scoop arrives from @evleaks. His latest is confirmation of a Samsung made Nexus 10 tablet. Not only did he list the specs for the device, he also made mention of Android 4.5. Of course, more than likely, it will be toward the middle of this year before this tablet is officially announced, so it shouldn’t come as any surprise that it will sport a new version of Android. The question remains, “Will it be simply an updated version of KitKat or will it be a completely new dessert?”

Here’s the Nexus 10 specs he mentioned in his Tweet:

  • Samsung’s own Exynos 5
  • WQXGA Display (upgraded from the current model)
  • 3GB RAM
  • 16 or 32GB storage
  • 5MP/3MP Cameras
  • Android 4.5

Also, by chance it would appear the Nexus 10 is completely sold out on the Google Play Store at the moment. How odd…

Would you like your Samsung Galaxy S5 in Metal or Plastic?

Samsung-Galaxy-S5Rumour has it the Galaxy S5 will be available in two versions later this year. According to SamMobile an inside source has “confirmed” some of the specs of the company’s next-generation flagship Android handset. Apparently Samsung the next incarnation of the Galaxy S will have a “metallic back plate while being constructed of metal on the sides and front.” There will be a cheaper model made from plastic, just like previous Galaxy S versions, and cost €650 ($888). It will be interesting to see if there is much difference with the rumoured Galaxy F.

Inside the Galaxy S5 is said to be two processors, an Exynos 6 model and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 CPU. The Exynos model featuring 64-bit support and built-in LTE, and will likely equip the metal Galaxy S5 model, while the Snapdragon would be found inside the plastic version. Both versions would feature a 5.25-inch Super AMOLED display with Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution, a 16-megapixel camera and Android 4.4 KitKat out of the box. Details about RAM, battery capacity and optical image stabilization support for the main camera are not available at this time.

Why stop there, when speculation should quickly lead to a Galaxy S5 Mini and the Galaxy S5 Zoom? With the Galaxy S5 possibly being unveiled in mid-March during an event in London, we should see the device roll out to market early April. A Galaxy S5 Mini is expected to be unveiled in June, and feature a Super AMOLED display and run KitKat, while the Galaxy S5 Zoom would be announced in May, sport a 4.8-inch qHD (960 x 540) display and run KitKat as well.
