HTC Touch Pro unboxed (exclusive!)

Ever since the HTC press conference announcing the HTC Touch Diamond three months ago people have been asking "Where's the one with the Keyboard?" Well finally, thanks to Clove Technology we've been able to get our hands on an HTC Touch Pro review unit.

HTC Touch Pro

The phone arrived just a few hours ago so I decided to record the customary unboxing ceremony for you to have a look at:

HTC Touch Pro unboxed

My initial thoughts are that the Touch Pro is an extremely nice device, the screen seems to be more sensitive than the Touch Diamond and it looks like HTC have spent the extra time with the Pro refining a few things. The TouchFlo3D interface seems more fluid and that QWERTY keyboard it great. It's a little bit bigger than I had anticipated and looks almost twice as thick as the Diamond plus the additional 50 grams may not sound like a lot but make it close to 50% heavier. Also, that TV-out feature that everyone has been talking about requires a special cable that you have to buy separately!

We'll have a full review for you soon but expect some comments and photos over the next few days too!

EDIT: More photos can be found HERE.

EDIT (again): Our HTC Touch Pro review is now live!

Nice looking device. I can live without a dedicated audio jack, but where's the US friendly HSPA bands!? Video out cable not included at that price!? I guess I'll wait.

When texting do you have to use the slide out keyboard or is there an on screen alternative such as t9 predictive text type buttons?

Looks nice, I'm trying to decide between this and sony xperia!

Touchflo 3D on L26 is almost as good without the expense. Looks noce, vga great, bit faster but otherwise tt2 with l26 v10 touchflo 3d just as good
    14/08/08 @ 22:44
No, you don't have to use the hardware keyboard. There are several touchscreen text input options to choose, from QWERTY keyboard to T9.

Thanks Matt! I wanted to know if this device has a iRDA?
    15/08/08 @ 07:29
No iRDA unfortunately, not many devices do lately.

Thanks for that, best Touch Pro video I've seen so far. I look forward to a full review. This baby looks like the ultimate tech toy! I do worry that it won't be quite as usable as a phone though (dialling, quick one handed texting etc).

Anyone know how far behind this the X1 is?

You said it had in-built GPS but I dont see it on that list above. Also would the GPS be free to use, I am looking at upgrading soon and GPS would be great to have.
    19/08/08 @ 07:55
    Steve,

GPS is on the Spec list above. GPS is free to use and the Pro comes with Google Maps pre-installed. If you want proper sat nav though you will need to look at something like TomTom or CoPilot.

My sences are just tingeling with anticipation of recieving an upgrade from my tired battered tytn 2 to the full glory of the Rahpael aka Touch pro. Good news to JB, SJK and all those poor souls who, like myself, have found orange's (and Lemons he he) customer service to be a misnomer and reminicent of extracting a meaningful conversation with a dead door; a rather nice lady from orange has informed me that the phone is in their 'coming soon' section (not on the customer website though) and has kindly offerd to send me an SMS when the phone is available. Surely there has to be a way of getting at least one person in all the major phone networks to leak some of the crucial information that keeps us mere mortals happy. Enough with the ramblings of a young fool. To tracey and matt i would like to thank you for the excellent service you provide to both your humble disciples and the phone industr. You are truly the voice in the darkness. I'm going to my ready room you have the bridge.

Very interesting piece of technology. Can you answer a question, can the TouchFlo3D be turned off? although its certainly better than the standard windows mobile, I find the 'flipping effect' especially the contacts list looks very enoying & potentially slow, and I feel its trying too hard to be flashy. Can the contacts be shown just as a list or in groups? Are there settings to keep the nice black theme, but to disable the daft 3D effects?

I have had 3 HTC's and I have to say they are great..the touch screen was a real pain to get used to but now I can't live with out it..

    So Matt

I am in total sync with my TytnII so is the HTC Touch Pro an almost direct replacement to it more than the HTC cruse which Orange said was the closest?

Does the Pro have speaker dial ( voice ) that has been a real gem of abit of kit..esp in the van to call back the office " call office " and it works I can't live with out that in todays hands free world!! Glad the camera was looked at abit I use this the most for quotes for work take the pic;s and then I can see the job in the office. shame the key board does not tilt I just wounder how many will get broke in the first few months with people bending them back !!!

Amanda, totally agree with you and want to do the same. My SPV M3100 has taken a major bashing over the last year and is still the only phone I continually rely on - but - for all it's good, the HTC Touch Pro, or whatever it's going to be called, looks like the only thing worth exchanging for. I really hope it's an improvement...

I have been awaiting the arrival of the HTC Touch Pro with Orange. I understand that they aren't going to supply this now which leaves a problem?
Could you please advise whether this is the case and what you would recommend as an alternative (with keyboard).
Also, can I purchase the unit alternatively and use it with Orange sim card?

The HTC Touch Pro is a great phone and I've been hearing lots of positive reviews. My own personal experience has been great and I'm really impressed by the phone. Web browsing is amazing with the full VGA screen and the hardware keyboard is just right. I wrote a review of the phone here:

This phone looks great, especially with the full QWERTY keyboard. I didn't know that it has a light as well as the camera which is cool. Does the Touch Pro have a virtual keyboard similar to the Touch Diamond? I think the virtual keyboard is nice when you only want to type a few letters or so.

This is a good phone but I can't understand why limited stock of this phone had been produced. This is more punishing for those who love the keyboard. Tried the Diamond, it is all rubbish compared with this phone.
