Samsung F480 Tocco Review

The F480 Tocco is another high-end touchscreen phone from Samsung following in the footsteps of the Armani and the F490 Nerva. It looks like every mobile phone manufacturer wants to have touchscreen devices in its arsenal and I wonder how much this has to do with the success of the iPhone and the HTC Touch.

    GENERAL

The Samsung F480 Tocco is a lightweight, slim and attractive looking device. On the front we have a 2.8" TFT display which sits flush within a metal surround. There's a front-facing VGA camera for video conferencing and a few basic controls under the screen.

Looking to the left hand side of the unit we can see an up-down rocker button for in-call volume control as well as scroll control when browsing web pages for example. Below that a hinged plastic cover hides the MicroSDHC memory card slot.

    Samsung F480 left side

On the other side of the unit there's a similar plastic cover sitting over the proprietary connector used for charging, connecting a set of headphones (supplied) and for connecting to a PC via USB. Also on the right is a camera button used to launch the camera app. and for actually taking a photo. Directly beneath that are a couple of holes used to attach phone charms or lanyards.

Flipping the F480 over reveals an attractive brushed metal back and the 5 mega pixel camera complete with flash. Looking at the back of the F480 you could easily be forgiven for thinking that it was digital camera rather than a mobile phone.

  • REVIEW

I first saw the Samsung F480 Tocco a few weeks ago when I called in at a local phone store. Initially I thought is must be a new Windows Mobile device that I hadn't seen before (unlikely :P) as I thought it rather unusual for a 'non-smartphone' to be almost completely touchscreen. Returning back to the office I decided to drop Samsung a line to see if I could review one.

First impressions of the F480 is that it's a classy looking phone. The front is clean and understated with just a few push button controls housed in a shiny case. Turning the phone over the metal casing is obvious which makes the phone both look and feel robust.

The supplied leather case should help to maintain its good looks. However, you'll soon discover that the F480 is a total fingerprint magnet that will have you rubbing the screen on your shirt each time you finish a call having held the glossy screen to your ear! The other drawback of having such a shiny screen is the performance in bright lighting conditions, especially direct sunlight. It's virtually impossible to use the F480 under these conditions and it has you looking for shade each time you attempt to make a call.

The touchscreen works very well and is quite sensitive to even a soft touch, not quite as good as the iPhone but certainly better than many other touchscreen devices that I've used in the past.

The user interface is also a pleasure to use and the main menu is set out as a series of 12 icons. Each of the sub-menus appear in list form and the last used item in each of the lists is highlighted as the default when you open up the menu. This sounds like a reasonable thing to do but actually becomes a bit of a pain, I'd like to be able to turn this feature off but sadly that doesn't seem to be possible.

It's been a long time since I used a phone with a numeric pad and as a consequence I find texting and emailing with a numeric pad a bit of a chore. The F480 doesn't have an on-screen QWERTY keyboard which would be ideal for texting and emailing. I guess T9 is something that you will either love or hate but it would be nice to have the option of both included.

    The Samsung F80 Tocco

    The Samsung F480 Tocco

The 5 mega pixel camera on the F480 Tocco is quite pleasing. It includes autofocus, digital zoom, LED flash and also a funky new feature called "Smile Shot". This is similar to the face and smile detection being incorporated in to many mainstream digital cameras and is supposed to be able to tell when your subject smiles and snap a photo at precisely the right moment! This isn't something that I was able to get working quite right but I suspect that it may depend on the subject and the environment as to how effective this is. That said, the F480 is able to take fairly decent pictures but as I have stated before, camera phones are no substitute for proper purpose-built digital cameras and this one is no different. It is among the best I've seen though.

As a music player the F480 performs quite well. There isn't a vast amount of free memory available on the device as standard, 240MB wont go very far but it will allow you to get a few MP3 files on to start you off. Fortunately you can add up to 8GB of additional storage memory thanks to the microSDHC compatible memory card support. When you do finally run out of music there's always a built in FM radio, with RDS support, to give you something to listen to.

The media player application is decent and easy to get to grips with.

The application offering the greatest surprise is the built in web browser. To be honest I was expecting this to be basic at best but I have to say that it puts many other mobile web browsers, even the mainstream Pocket IE in smartphone, to shame. The best of the viewing modes for web pages is the smart-fit mode where pages are rendered neatly on the screen and can be read without having to scroll left and right.

There is another disappointment here though as it is NOT possible to rotate the screen and display webpages landscape on the device. Again I would have thought this logical and easy for Samsung to achieve but this feature is sadly missing.

The F480 is quite well connected and, where you have coverage, the HSDPA connection is extremely fast. Bit of a shame that the radio is only tri-band but this wouldn't bother me too much. Music is transferred to the device via a USB cable connected to a PC. Transfer rates are high thanks to the USB 2.0 support.

The lack of WiFi is also a bit of a shame and something that I particularly missed especially coming from a Windows Mobile background where WiFi is normally standard. With the excellent web browser I think that the F480 would really benefit from WiFi support.

    f480_angled_right

    CONCLUSION

The Samsung F480 Tocco really surprised me. I thought that the beauty of the device would only be skin-deep but there are plenty of other bits on the inside to get the gadget freaks excited.

Cameraphone fans will love the 5 MP camera and those just wanting a cool looking phone that fit easily in their pocket will find this phone easily fits the bill and then offers so much more besides.

If only the F480 had Exchange email support then it's be a phone that more business types could enjoy.

The F480 is a great all rounder offering Music, Video, Email, Web browser and Camera in one neat package.

I am a very old and loyal user of samsung for last 5 years. All the time i find samsung different and innovative in their products modifications and inventions. This time too Samsung take step by its new upcoming mobile product, this handset is technically strong as compared to other mobile devices. The F480 is a great all rounder offering Music, Video, Email, Web browser and Camera in one neat package.

My fiance has a Samsung Tocco / F480 and loves it. The problem she has is the sensitivity of the microphone, if she makes a call somewhere there is some background noise it is almost impossible for the person on the other end to hear her. Did you find this problem with the Samsung? Just trying to work out if it is a faulty handset or not!

Thats a lovely phone, do you really reckon it can compete with the iPhone like many have said? The one thing attracting me to this phone is its slimness and the 5mp camera.

I recieved this phone on Tuesday as an upgrade to my old e900 and I love it!!!! I find the screen without buttons is a dream to use and whilst it may be a little sensitive it doesn't take long to get used to it. I also like the way that Samsung have included a leather screen protector case which is a cool idea although I will be looking to get a seperate leather case to protect the whole phone.
It is packed with features and I love the widget tool bar which is a cool idea and the camera is excellent compared to some on phones I have seen :0)
Whilst I really like the i phone I did think that phone is a little on the large side for me anyway and do love the size and slim design of the Tocco phone. I tried before I bought and couldn't wait for it to arrive!
    Love it!

I find that the noise quality is poor and breaks up often even with a perfect signal. There is a slight echo. Will be taking my phone to my nearest dealers shop to see if this is a recognised problem. Apart from that I am learning to use it and love it!

I am thinking about buying a new mobile phone soon but the fact there is no qwerty keyboard has left me a bit unsure whether this is the right phone for me.
Can anyone who has one give me an idea of how easy the T9 format is to use?

Im thinking about changing my phone so i am able to get the Tocco. Iv had touch screen phones before, which have been half touch screen and have key pad - like the LG chocolate, and the 5mg cyber shop both of which the tough screen was dodgey.
i dont want to pay for this phone, if im going to have to keep taking it back, has anyone had any kinds of problems with the touch screen breaking? Email me please.

Just in response to Lucy's comments ("No Wi-Fi, no QWERTY, no GPS, smaller screen - iPhone is better") Can i just point out that the supposedly perfect iPhone doesn't support picture messaging! What is the point of having a camera on a phone if you can't send the pics on. I had the iPhone and swapped it for a tocco. Much neater, easier to use, and the camera is brilliant. Sure it doesn't have everything but it is far better than the over-priced, over-hyped iPhone

I've loved Samsung phones since my very first but this one just doesn't compare.

To anyone considering getting this phone... don't bother! I loved this phone and still do despite it's issues, one of which is the touchscreen!

I've had this phone for about 4 months and already I've had to send it off for repair as the touchscreen from the middle to the top of the screen no longer works. I'm not sure if this is a problem that Samsung have noted with this phone, but it may well be 2 weeks before I get my phone back now and as I'm paying £30 a month on an 18 month contract, I'm not happy!

Samsung should try and make samsungs as they used to, willing to withstand anythin!

I haven't dropped this phone, gotten it wet or anything else.

Though it will probably come back saying water damage regardless!

Go with somethingelse. Trust me on this one!

I just got this phone today and so far it seems a good choice. The last phone I had was the LG Viewty which is slower, scratched easily and had various problems. In comparison the Tocco seems to be quicker and the camera, which is supposedly the same, seems to be better. The bluetooth works fine for me as well.
However, have just transferred various .jar files to it and it does not support this file type, meaning I can't use mobile facebook, google maps or any of the other games I had on my Viewty.
Also the touch screen is more sensitive than the Viewty meaning I often press the wrong button, and on the calendar it seems almost impossible to get the right day.
I'm sure in terms of that it will just take some getting used to, and various websites describe ways of getting round the block on .jar files.
Despite a few issues, it's a good phone. Who's ever had a perfect one?

I have just had this phone for 2 days and so far so good, I must admit did shop about looked at endless reviews all phones have various problems !! The Tocco is a lovely looking mobile and the case that comes with it is a brilliant idea and other companies should follow suit with the touch screen mobiles my prada looked terrible after only a couple of months ! The Tocco has been really easy to use and not complicated at all, my only concern is the call dropping which only after 2 days has not happened yet , BUT there is a bit of distortion on calls nothing major but I am hoping it does not get worse or starts call dropping as I would be reluctant to get rid of it so crossing my fingers ! Pictures are good, and texting is easy but I was use to the Prada (which I do not recommend) unless they iron out a few things !!

I just got this phone, the samsung tocco, and my personal view point is that it is top notch, the dogs bollocks. i absolutley love it. i agree tht the iphone is a little on the large side, but is a better phone if you like the specifications, but it is way to business orientated. I think the 5mp camera on the tocco is amazing and love the little widget bar, just like vista. i love the way the music appears on the homescreen once you've started playing it in your libary. it is a little sensitive i guess, but only takes a few days to come to terms with. Texting is a dream, so easy, and plus its alot quiter for example if you're in a cinema, you dnt hav all tht click, click, click, which is really cool. Tbh im gonna go to my grave with this phone, absolutley adore it. I highly recomend one, its an iphone alternative and at a much more reasonable price.

Pretty good phone.. but there are a couple of drawbacks I've found so far from the image/camera side of things, some are minor some are major.

    1. You can't rotate pics to edit them so anything taken in portrait aspect can't have emoticons and such added (minor niggle).
    2. Picture quality isn't great - I bought the phone primarily as a phone/camera. The 5mp pics aren't as crisp as on my 2mp nokia N73 and the images look washed out. Using ISO 400 has improved this a little but still a bit disappointed with image quality.
    3. This is a major flaw. When zooming in on a picture your thumb presses are queued up. It's easy to tap a few times and have the picture zoom in. Problem with this is the zoom in icon is right next to the icon at the bottom that activates the options menu and it's very easy for a bunch of queued clicks to make you accidentally choose to send the image to the last person you contacted via the phone... basically if you're zooming in like a maniac and your thumb moves slightly too low, which is easily done, the phone queues up commands for options - send - recent contacts - (last person in list) - then sends. And there's no way to interrupt the process! So be careful when zooming if you don't want that photo to be accidentally sent to grandma!!!! I find this a major flaw. I can't find any way to turn this off or reduce the number of queued clicks to just 1.

This is a very high quality, indoors, the camera quality is extremely good, and near enough to that of a mainstream, higher pixel camera. The phone is easy to use in making calls, texting and using the internet. The internet connection i get is very good qualtity wherever i am and i find it a joy surfing the web. In answer to Joseph, the T9 is extremely easy to use, it takes a couple of hours to get used to and from then, you'll be flying, typing at ridiculously fast speeds. The music quality is excellent, and i think everyone should get this phone! Haha, nah seriously, if your looking to invest in a stylish, fun and yet practical phone, this could very well be the one for you. x

I'd be happy to chuck this phone in the river. Have gone back to an old Sony Ericsson mainly due to the sound. Very muffled on the Tocco.. Sent it for repair and Vodaphone have found a small spot of water damage inside and will not repair it. This phone has not been near obvious water, so not very durable. Aslo if you text a word that is misspelt then go back to this word you have to retype it as opposed to getting the dictionary word versions. It's very easy to touch a wrong key which sends you off to different menus. I tried really hard to learn and use this phone properly but I promise you will get so frustrated with it. The web speed was actually good and the screen seems very durable. Will not appear on a Mac desktop (most USB devices will) so ypu'll need a memory card to transfer files.. or Bluetooth transfers I guess.
