Philips Bluetooth Stereo Headset SHB6100

Philips is probably one of the last brand names that would come to mind when you think about wireless, mobile or Bluetooth technology, but that could be set to change if Philips get thier way as they are now moving in to the Bluetooth headset market.

There are currently 4 products in the range, each of them offering Bluetooth wireless connectivity and offering music as well as voice call capability.

Philips kindly sent us their Bluetooth Stereo Headset SHB6100 "Neckband for phone and mp3 player" to have a look at and in the video below you can see me unboxing and having a look at them.

What I like about this headset is that it comes with a Bluetooth 'dongle' that you can plug into almost any audio device to make it Bluetooth capable.

Philips SHB6100

You can see the full PDF specification HERE.

Oh, and that elastic thing that I didn't know about in the video was actually a 'Wrap around pouch' for 'Extra portability' - The mp3 dongle comes with a wrap around pouch to tie your mp3 player and the mp3 dongle into a tight bundle.

The audio quality of the headphones is really quite good, with very little hiss or other noise that I have experienced with other bluetooth headsets. The large (32mm) speakers give a good base response that you don't tend to get from in-ear heaphones. They are also quite comfortable to wear as the ear-pieces are filled with a soft gel. Despite having a built in Bluetooth receiver and battery they are not much heavier than a normal set of headphones.

As I metioned above, the headphones can be used for stereo audio playback OR as a headset for making/receiving calls. This is an either or situation though as you have to set up two different Bluetooth profiles - one for stereo and one as a headset profile. You cannot have one profile for both jobs. However, in practice you can use the Philips Switchstream. With SwitchStream you will hear a ring tone in the headset when you are receiving a call on your Bluetooth enabled phone. You can then pick up the call from your headset and return to your music after ending the call. I wasn't able to get this working when using the headphones with my laptop and receiving calls through Skype.

Pairing the headphones with the included Bluetooth dongle could not be simpler and is a matter of a few button presses. I did try this out with my MP3 player and it works quite well.

When using the headphone with my laptop I was able to use the buttons on the headphones to skip between tracks, play and pause etc. but this was not something that I was able to do when using the headphones with my Windows Mobile device.

Overall I like these headphones, definitely worth considering if you are looking for Bluetooth stereo!

As with all of our videos, there is a higher res version available to download HERE.

These look quite neat and they do an in-ear set too (SHB7102 according to Philips website) BUT where the hell do you buy a set?

I've looked everywhere!
27/04/07 @ 13:49
The price for these are going to be around £100, and you can buy them at Argos, John Lewis, Dixons, Currys.

this headset looks interesting , but the main disadvantage is that when you go wireless you will probably want to take them to greater distances and will find yourself somehow limited to the Bluetooth range . Radio headphones are good at this but aren't as slim unfortunately .
05/05/07 @ 23:16
You're quite right, the range on these is actually quite limited and just a few steps away from the PC and they lose the connection.

It doesn't seem like any of the above mentioned shops actually sell these headphones. I only found one seller on amazon. And that seller trades from Germany. Is there any reason these aren't available in UK yet? I left an enquiry through the form on the Philips website, however, two days later there is still no reply.

Dmitry,

I have submitted your comment to my contact at Philips. I'll let you know what they come back with!

Got my shb6102 headphones. They are awesome. The feeling of no cables attached does give a wonderful sense of freedom. Sound quality is good (as far as mp3 music goes).

Though music playback from the phone (n95) sometimes has "cd skipping" effect for reasons a I am not aware of. Music playback through the 3.5-jack-bluetooth transmitter is perfect.

Despite arguments concerning ears being tired if headphones were worn for a long time the experience proves otherwise (due to a rather clever ear-fitting mechanism) - I was running for 1 hour in them and my ears didn't feel tired (not as tired as when wearing any other behind the neck headphones).

Others mentioned that volume isn't high enough. If volume is maximised on both devices (headphones and phone/player) it seems a little more than enough (I didn't test them in an airplane or underground).

The headphones do switch to the phone call seamlessly whenever receiving or making one. However, when I attempted to play music from the phone and player simultaneously, phone froze (restart was needed).

Just want to emphasise that I tested the headphones with N95 and experiences on other phones may differ.

Has there been any response from your Philips contact yet? I am keen to find out where to buy the SHB7102 Bluetooth in-ear version.
I am desperate to buy this item, but can't find anywhere apart from Amazon either!

I made an enquiry from Philips, the gave me the number for a mail order company which specialise in Philips products. They did not know of the SHB7102 and said it could be because its new.

I have seen that there are currently two versions available. There is the SHB7102/00 and SHB7102/05. The only difference I can see, is that overall net weight is slightly larger for the SHB7102/00. I e-mailed Philips regarding the difference, and where to purchase the item, but 4 days later and still no reply!

The only one I can currently find for sale, is the SHB7102/00 at Amazon and a Belgian company that charges £45 for delivery to UK, or you could pick it up from their store in Belgium yourself!!!

I'll be checking this site dayly for more info.

How do you charge the headset? Can it be charged with a USB cable like the PS3 controllers?
07/06/07 @ 08:30
No USB, there is a charger that comes with it and you can charge both the Headphones and the Bluetooth Dongle at the same time.

I've been talking to Philips' PR people and they are 'Frustrated that the headphones are not more widely available' I've still been unable to locate a UK supplier for you.

I glad there is some feedback coming from Philips. I am still trying to get some communication from Philips myself regarding the products, so I'll post anything out I find.

Thanks for the help so far...

This is the reply I got from Philips:

"Thank you for your recent e-mail.

With regards to your query we can advise that, unfortunately, we no longer
have the facility to supply products directly from these premises. We can
however suggest that the following company specialises in the supply of
Philips accessories and operates a mail order service:

Dutchwest Distribution Tel: 01434 323232.
Internet orders available at www.dutchwest.com

We would also advise that you do a search on http://www.google.co.uk and
http://www.pricerunner.co.uk/ for the stockiest of the unit."

I checked Dutchwest and it seems they don't have the item.

mmmmmmmmmm... I might be interested!!!

Matt, perhaps you should try and get/request the SHB7102 from Philips to test/demo and then I'd definitely be interested!

I have had some response from Philips just now:

"We are able to inform two model numbers you have provided SHB7102/00 & SHB7102/05 are identical, the '/05' signifies the country of manufacture.

After performing a search for retailers of this product we have only been able to identify Amazon.co.uk as having this product in stock, as this is a niche product availability is unfortunately limited."
07/06/07 @ 11:21
I tried to get a 7102 but unfortunately they 'do not have any more review models at this time'

Matt question for you,
You now how the shb6102 model comes with a minijack dongle. And there is also an shb6101 model which is identical headphones but instead of a minijack dongle it comes with a usb bluetooth dongle (apparently for VoIP on a PC). I have the shb6102 model but no bluetooth on my laptop. Do you think i will be able to use the headphones for VoIP like Skype if I buy a third party bluetooth usb dongle (which obviously would have the a2dp and other profile capabilities)?
08/06/07 @ 14:40
Yeah they should work with a 3rd Party BT dongle - I really cant see why they wouldnt!

So is the Philips SHB6100 Stereo Bluetooth Headset any better, than the Nokia BH-501 headset? Regarding:

-range
-battery
-radio
-track skip

Just to let you know, I have purchased the SHB7102/00 from Amazon through a German company.
It arrived with a European 2-pin power adapter, so if anyone wants any products from this Philips range then be assured that you get the correct charger. I believe the SHB7102/05 will be the UK version. However, the German supplier is sending me a UK adapter (hopefully!), so when ordering make sure you ask for the UK power adapter.

I will post my comments about it, when I can charge the thing!

Hi,
I've been reading through your review of the philips bluetooth headphones and am pretty interested in the SHB7102 model, but I was wondering if you, or any of your viewers could tell me where the mic is on the headphones and if it's on the bluetooth dongle, is it too far away from your mouth for when you are making calls? I prefer in ear headphones, but the mic on the SHB6102 looks like it is much better positioned. Thanks for any help!

I now have my SHB7102/00 working with a simple Euro to UK plug adapter. I would recommend this to anyone who is fed up with wired headphones getting caught under chairs and ripped out of the PC. No more problems for me!
The battery is high quality and can be recharged any time.
The only thing to point out is that, the volume control on the headphones gives a hissing noise at full volume, so to eliminate this, just turn the volume down a couple of settings and turn up the other media device (PC, etc.).
A bit pricey at £75 including delivery, but for me, well worth it. I can also plug in my own headphones into the bluetooth device if I want!

Is it waiting for the SHB7102, I've been waiting for it, but in that time my hands free has died on me. Should I go for the Sony DR-BT20NX instead? I've seen it for £25 and dont think the SHB7102 will be near that price.

Hi, nice site. I am planning to buy bluetooth headphones (for laptop and cellphone/mp3 use), but I am very new to this so I have a couple of questions.
1. On some reviews I have read that this bluetooth devices cause interference with wifi conenctions. Is this true for all headsets or only for particular brands/models?

2. The obvious...which are the best ones. I am concerned with sound quality (not really an audiophile but..), size(I have seen some which look like snow ear covers! I don't want them :)), compatibility and of course battery life (7+ hours).

Thanks for your help!

Comment from: Mike [Visitor]
I found out that the 6101, 6102, 6103 are all the same over-the ear headset, packaged with a Bluetooth USB dongle (6101),
a 3.5mm audio jack Bluetooth dongle (6102) or an iPod Bluetooth connector (6103).

The USB dongle lets you use Skype etc. on your PC, though according to the manual it's only mono sound. Switching to sereo requires a manual process on the PC. Presumably you could skip all of this if your PC offers A2DP and AVRCP bluetooth profiles (unlikely).

Yeah, my PC wont automatically switch probiles which means that if I get a skype call while
listening to music I have to manually switch! :S

I am interesting in buying the Philips shb6102 headset however I have the following concerns.
(i) Can I use it with skype and how (I own a HP TC1100 Tablet PC with inbuilt bluetooth). Do I need a usb dongle.
(ii) What is the sound quality like for listening to music been streamed from a mobile( I own a SE w850i)
(iii) If current owner are satisfied and will recommend.

I've successfuly used with them with a third party bluetooth dongle. My dongle came with software that let me connect to it in either AV or headset mode. AV allowing for stereo with no mic, and headset mode allowing for mono + mic.

Finally got this headphone from Ebay. It was a hard find since almost all sellers only ship to the US, but it was my lucky day :-) and found one that shipped worldwide.

I bought it instantly! In my personal use, the headphone is great and has nice features. Paired instantly on my mobile phone, switching between music and calls was easy, no dropouts, battery life is 3 days - I use it excessively, charging time almost 4 hours.

I really like this headphone and will be using it for a long time!

I purchased shb6102 before summer and form day one i was realy happy with this gadget! Phones are light and have thight rubber grip around ear so they wont drop even in sport activity . The housing and neck piece has a bit plastic feel but it is solid and firm. If you wear phones for long time, you will forget that you are wearing them :)) Maximum listening time is 5 huours (volume is on 1/3). On standby, it can endure more than 20 hours. Recharge is kinda slow: 4-5 hours. Dongle is O.K but problem is in range. Unfortunalty, it is very short: 2m max. Sometimes, when you turn your head realy quick, phones intend to lose connection with dongle. Annoying thing is that you have to pair phones and dongle every time. Other than that, dongle works just fine.
Sound is perfect, it can be loud, strong bass, rich middle tones and clear high tones. My SonyEricson paired with SHB6100 like a charm. Switching between music and talking is extremly easy: when phone rings, mic kicks in, MP3 is on pause, and you have to press answer bottun or if you set your phone right, you can autoanswer. After conversation ends, mp3 player resumes music. You can use all of the additional controls (play, pause, stop, nex track, prev.track, vlume up/down). As for other usage (like extra headphones for my laptop or pc), it is realy useful, again, sound is perfect, range is also good (it realy depends on bluetooth radio device in your laptop or pc, for me, it has 15m radius). You can use it for VOIP (like Skype, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, Googletalk ... ) but it has one bad side: you cant use it for music at the same time! This is not a problem for me because my main soundcard reproduces most of the sounds. I use SHB like secondary soundcard posing as quality wireless headset. I guess that problem is in audio profiles on pc or laptop(so, no automatic answering, pausing and switching between music/conversation). You shouldn't have anny problems seting it up on XP or Vista. Actualy, you don't need additional driver if you use Vista. Xp requires Toshiba bluetooth stack or other software package from your bluetooth dongle manufacturer.
I have MIO a710 (it is a pda, phone and GPS) and SBH6102 works with that device just fine (like with regular phone). It can reproduce sound form MP3 or AVI. It depends on application.

In general, i would highly recomed this device to everybody. It is kinda pricy but it worths every penny

Help with pairing!!

I just purchased the SHB6102 after checking out all the specs etc and went to pair it with my Nokia N95 and it wont pair.

I have checked the instructions, I have my mobile bluetooth settings to 'on' and 'visible'. i have turned each item on then off and retried. I have the headphones on flashing red/green but phone does not recognise it. I have paired other items to phone before so not a novice....can you help or is there something I'm missing here. if not i'll take it back to shop.

Help with skype
I bought the SHB6100, can pair it with laptop but cant use it on skype. It keeps on coming up as an audio setting error! does anyone know how i can solve this problem???
thx

RC, if it's the same as my Mr. handsfree headset, you need to select the connection profile on your laptop.

when you pair the headset with your computer, don't choose "express/automatic mode" but custom pairing. Then, start pairing. When the PC finds the headset, it will ask you to choose the profile. Select headset, it should be available.

Drawback with Mr Handsfree Blue Music on my PC is that the sound quality is not as good when paired as headset. When connected as Quality Heasdet I can change the sound quality to High Quality, no such option in headset mode.
Can anybody tell me if this is the same with the Philips headset?
