HTC Hermes USB connector pin config

September 10th, 2006

I've been asked over and over again "what is the pin configuration of the USB connector on the SPV M3100" and what are the "TyTN connector pinout specs".

Rather than saying "I don't know" I decided to work it out!

Hermes USB Connector pins

The above diagram is of the EMU plug viewed end-on.

Enhanced Mini USB (EMU) connectors are double sided. One side carry's the USB signal data while the other carries audio signals. The pin config is as follows.

Data

  • A = GND
  • B = NC
  • C = +DATA
  • D = -DATA
  • E = +5v
  • Audio

  • 1 = +Mic
  • 2 = +Right
  • 3 = Switch
  • 4 = Gnd
  • 5 = Gnd
  • 6 = +Left
  • You can find Enhanced Mini USB connectors on a variety of devices. The above config covers the USB configuration of the Orange SPV M3100, HTC TyTN, Vodafone v1605, HTC Oxygen devices and HTC Meteor devices and probably many more.

Use at your own risk though, play safe!

    Matt

I have been trying to find out where I can buy a blank connector and make my own adaptor and so far I have yet to get anywhere with this. Is there a different name for this type of connector other then "Enhanced Mini USB (EMU)"?

    Thanks for the info.

Good work, this may be the only pinout for this device on the net. Thank you! One thing you might want to mention though is that "pin B" in the usb spec has N/C (ignoring usb2go) the hermes seems to use it to detect charging source.

Current theory is that it works like this:

If power is detected and a usb connection is negotiated on the data lines, charge.

If power is detected and a usb connection is not detected, don't charge . (Theres a bug where it will accept some charge at least the first time only you connect power, then you have to reset).

If power is detected and usb connection is not detected BUT pin's A and B are bridged then allow 'dumb' charging.

No idea why they've done this but the behavior fits the theory.

One question though. How does the unit detect headphones are inserted? Obviously it's not anything in the mic/vol box as you cut it off.. does the 'EMU' connector on the headphones bridge any pins on the USB side you're aware of?

It might hellp if you also adress the question direct to HTC Support

Hello, Im not a technology expert just a simple user. Ive tried to connect my HTC TYTN to a MP3 player USB stick; It doesnt work! Ive been told that this is because the PDA is a USB slave; Is this true? Can I reverse this to make the PDA a host; Any help much appreciated but in laymans terms.

Comment from: Matt [Member] Email · www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs
The very simple answer is no. You cannot connect any USB 'slave' device to the M3100, the M3100 simply doesn't have the necessary hardware to achieve this. All PDA's have this limitation at the moment, the one exception will be the XDA Flame. When that is released it will have'USB on the Go' which is a new technology that will enable external devices to be connected.

I also tried to find a blank connector for this device for a custom wired hands free set and audio connection to my car amplifier. In the end I decided to use the connector of the headset. It is not easy to disassemble the connector (had to use a knife, small screwdriver, a lighter and a soldering iron), but eventually I managed to get to the terminals. There's a small PCB in the connector with some SMD's; probably for EMC purposes.

GJ: Did you manage to connect the audio to your car amplifier AND have the device charged ? So, can you use the power/usb connection simultanious with the audio connection ?????

This would be great for in-car use, having the sound over your car amp and have the device charged at the same time !

    THANK YOU

Thats all I really wanted to say, the information you have here is very useful and has saved me sitting around with a scope working it out.

As for plugs, I didn't want to mutilate any of the original accesories, but if we can't buy them anywhere I guess this is the only choice.

As for the power pins question this is simple a case of juice.

If I plug the USB cable into a HTC device, then plug that usb cable into a usb port and just wire that up to a bench power supply... the device draws a few hundred milliamps. (As much as USB spec allows).
This device, much like other mobile devices I have used which USB charge, can barely draw enough power of the USB to run itself let alone charge the battery.

However, if you close the A/B pins you are telling the phone "This is not a USB port, its a 1A power brick" so the phone charges the battery at its maximum safe rate.

This behaviour is stop the phone frying your usb ports.

    P.S.

I notice there was also a question asked about the headset.

As its obviously not a physical switch in the connector and there doesn't seem to be any spare pins to signal an official headset is inserted, it must simply go on the current drawn through the speaker.

Think about it, if I'm playing sound into a headphone socket with nothing plugged into it, no electricity will flow anywhere, but plug in an 8ohm speaker and suddenly you've completed the circuit, current flows through it.

The way to test this would be a variable resistance with a large range, perhaps a resistance box.

Start with lots of resistance and slowly slide your way down to a few ohms, then back up again. You should be able to locate thresholds at which the device considers the headset connected/disconnected.

    UPDATE:

Since looking up the pinouts for this device yesterday, and discovering the plugs are impossible to find, I found a headset and had the plug of it.

Firstly your pinout is great and useful.

Secondly now I've dismantled the plug on the headset I can see that pin4 is linked internally to pinA (gnd) in the plug assembly and this is how the device detects a headset connection, by grounding pin4.

I discovered this completely by accident, after using the plug from the headset to make a new charger I discovered I couldn't get sound from the device if this new charger is plugged in.

Cutting the pin4 connection solved the problem.

Just wanted to let all you HTC users know that to charge and sync your phone you can use a standard MINI usb cable - the EMU dongle it not required. The wide part of a MINI usb plug fits right into the wide part of the EMU port and properly aligns the data connections. For you headphone hackers out there - that means you can then modify the supplied EMU dongle to be used to connect to your headphones!

I have been provided a VOIP softphone from Nortel for working from home. At present I can only to answer the phone by clicking the mouse on the screen. This is a bit of a nuisance. There is one USB headset by Nortel that will allow me to answer the phone by pressing a button on the headset itself, but the only problem is that it is wired.

Is there a device that will allow me to insert a 'dongle' into the PC USB port (instead of the headset), and then connect the headset to another dongle 'dongle1'. The purpose would be to create a wireless connection between 'dongle' and 'dongle1'.

    Apologies for the terminology.

There was a comment/question of Dennis wether or not Gj managed to get sound to the car amp and get the PDA charged at the same time. Well, I managed, thanks to the comments stated here. I have a car cradle from Carcom. This cradle has a cable wich is split half way to make it possible the suply power to external GPS antenna. I changed the wiring inside the cradle, soldering the wires directly to the connector inside the cradle according to the pin config above. Then I made an extra connection between pin A and 4. The 5 pin connector which is orginaly used for the connection of the GPS anatenne is used as a audio out port and cennected the the car amp.

Mike, the pin-out for the HTC Touch is exactly the same as the Hermes above. The headphones can be modified to provide both audio and charging as they only have the pins on one side. Best bet is the splitter thing that HTC make, you should be able to get one from eXpansys.

Matt, Thanks for the reply. I found the 'splitter' you were talking about. You obviously charge via the 5 pin USB and Audio via the other 6 pin. As regards the 6 pin audio I am try to 'modify' my current car kit which has the following outputs
    1 - Vin - Charger input
    2- GND - Charger output
    3 - ACI - Auto-connect Ignition
    4 - Vout
    5 - USB Vbus
    6 - Fbus Rx/USB D+
    8 - GND - Data GND (Logic)
9 - VMic- - Audio IN - Ext. Mic input negative
    10 - VMic+ - Audio IN - Ext. Mic input positive
    11 - Hs Ear L- - Audio Out - Ext. left-negative
    12 - Hs Ear L+ - Audio Out - Ext. left-positive
    13 - Hs Ear R- - Audio Out - Ext. right-negative
    14 - Hs Ear R+ - Audio Out - Ext. right-positive

Have you any thoughts on which of these I sould connect to the 6 pin Audio USB? (I have got the 5 pin sorted)
    Thanks

I’m also trying to solve a problem with my car kit. It is an Arkon CM799 and it has an input for 3.5 headphone jack and a regular mini USB connector for the phone charging.
I am trying to find a best way of connecting both these inputs to a HTC TyTN Enhanced Mini USB, so I would have both charging and sound.
I had an idea just to open the car kit and solder an external cable with an Enhanced Mini USB, so it could be just plugged directly into the phone.
My question is, have somebody find a place where to buy the ExtUSB blank connector or may be a cable that would include all 11 leads (both for power and sound)?

    Thanks,
    Michael

I have been studying this and it appears that Motorola's USB charger required a slightly different configuration, B requires a 145K resistor linked to A and not simply shorted. I wish to use just one charger for both (with the right adaptor as described in here of course) as I travel and try to minimise the number of charger and main adaptor one needs to carry
