EE 4G LTE – Are you going to upgrade? We’re going speed testing.

ee-logo2

With the roll out of EE’s 4G network to 11 major cities in the UK many mobile customers will be wondering if it is worth upgrading to a 4G plan, or even a switch from their current carrier to EE just to benefit from the super fast data connection.

The EE price plans and data allowances are not quite as good as I thought they would be but depending on what you use your smartphone for may well dictate if 4G is for you or not.

So to help you make up your mind I am going on a mission. Next week I will be in possession of the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from EE and I shall be travelling around the London area and outskirts where they say they have LTE coverage performing speed tests.

We clearly know from already testing the service at a recent event in London that the speeds are really impressive but what I want to establish is if they are consistent or if now that the service has rolled out to the public if speeds are being affected by the number of users now on 4G.

So watch out next week for our 4G speed test results. It should be pretty interesting.

EE goes live with 4G LTE and superfast fibre in 11 UK cities

ee-logo

Superfast services are available for consumers and businesses for the first time ever today as EE, the UK’s most advanced digital communications company, launches its new 4G service in 11 cities. The launch is set to offer a timely boost to the UK economy offering firms the opportunity to increase innovation, boost productivity and cut costs, as has been the experience of companies in countries such as the US, Sweden, Japan and Germanysince the technology was first introduced. Today also marks the arrival of over 700 EE stores on high streets across the country in one of the biggest and fastest transformations in UK retail history.

Olaf Swantee, CEO at EE, said: “Today is a landmark day for our company, the UK mobile industry and, most importantly, the country’s businesses and consumers.

“But this is just the start as our 4G network will continue to grow stronger and wider by the day. We’re investing £1.5 billion in our network to be the first company to offer mobile 4G in the UK, alongside the biggest 3G network. Combined with our Fibre Broadband and revolutionary service model we have a pioneering and unique offer to customers across the UK – superfast speeds in the home, superfast speeds on the move and expert service on nearly every high street in Britain.”

The delivery of 4G and the company’s retail transformation has been underpinned by an intensive employee training programme as well as a comprehensive national IT infrastructure upgrade to ensure that EE customers receive expert service.

In its first phase, the 4G service is going live in Bristol, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Sheffield and Southampton. This will allow users to:

. Access the web on the go in an instant

. Download large email attachments quicker than ever

. Watch live TV on the move without buffering

. Download high-definition movies in minutes

. Play live multiplayer games on the go

. Make high quality video calls on the move

EE customers will still rely on 3G for voice calls

EE logo

According to mobilenewscwp, EE has not yet added VoLTE (voice over LTE) to its new 4G service meaning customers will still be reliant on a 3G connection and it will only be data that utilizes the new 4G technology.
While technically speaking I can’t see why this would make a difference to voice calls anyway, where it may have an affect is with the smartphone switching from 3G to 4G as this will deplete your battery life to a certain extent. Although I use a BlackBerry as my main device I always have it connected to 3G only instead of 2G & 3G for this very reason. I’m sure the difference isn’t huge but with smartphones getting bigger and more juice hungry each year every little battery saving tip helps in my opinion.

EE chief sales officer Marc Allera told Mobile News: “I can tell you we are not carrying voice over 4G to start with, it’s data only.”
“We are not talking about time scales on that yet. At the moment we are focusing on delivering this brand launch and getting as many people as possible using data over 4G.
“Then we will look at the voice aspects when we are ready,” Allera said.

Will Everything Everywhere announce a date for the LTE roll out tomorrow?

Everything_Everywhere_logo

I’m off to a meeting tomorrow morning to hook up with some of the Everything Everywhere team. The question is what will they tell us. Chances are it will be regarding the 4G LTE roll out but with the iPhone 5 launching very soon could the network be up and running in time for the new iPhone. If so I suspect it would give iPhone sales a little boost not to mention the fact that Orange and T-Mobile will pick up a load of new customers.

So tune back in tomorrow when hopefully we will be allowed to let you know the latest news.

Samsung to use NFC wristbands at Red Hot Chilli Peppers gig

Samsung-Mobile-Logo

Gone are the days of a normal wristband. Samsung are to use NFC enabled ones for the first time next month when the Red Hot Chilli Peppers play Knebworth in Hertfordshire.

Fans will be able to use their wristbands to enter competitions at the event as well as check in on Facebook at the Samsung stand: groovy.

Samsung UK and Ireland vice president of telecommunications and networks Simon Stanford said: “We’re delighted to announce our involvement in the first rollout of ticketless technology this country has seen.

“In future, everyone will be able to use their mobile phone as their ticket, whether they are music fans going to a gig, or a commuters travelling to work. So we’re excited to be aligning ourselves with that technology and to be bringing a new experience to both our customers and to music fans across the country.”

Nice to see NFC being used for something useful at last. It is one of those features that many of us now have on our smartphones but don’t really get the opportunity to utilize.
