Review Optoma Pico Pocket Projector

image Having reviewed lots of mobile phones last year it is nice to start this year with a review of an accessory that has left me speechless, well nearly anyway. When I was offered the chance to review this pocket sized projector it really interested me as I had heard so much about it and couldn’t wait to receive it and now after a few weeks use its time to share my thoughts on this amazing piece of tech.

What’s in the box of the Optoma Pico Pocket Projector

  • Optoma Pico Pocket Projector
  • 2 x Batteries
  • AV Cable
  • Tripod Adapter
  • MiniUSB to USB Cable
  • Power Adapter
  • Case

On the outside

The Pico Pocket Projector is made of black plastic and is very light in your hand, looking from above all we can see is the LED charging indicator and nothing else, the silver strip is a logo and only adds to the device ascetics.

On this side of the unit we have the AV input socket which is a 2.5mm 4 pole jack carrying both audio and video signals in the box is a short cable that plugs into this socket and gives you composite female connections (left and right audio and a single video connector), to the right of that we have a small single speaker and a simple focus dial. Depending on which source you intend to use with the projector additional cables will be required, for the video below and testing I had to buy the Apple composite video out cable to work this with my iPhone 3G

On the other side we have a three way switch where you can select off, half brightness and full brightness of the projector lamp and a mini USB connector for charging only.

The front of the projector is where all the magic appears from, the lens \ lamp which projects the source image onto the screen or wall.

Review

Plug in your device and switch it on and you have a 60″ image projected onto your wall or screen. This bit of kit is totally amazing. The hard part is getting the correct cable as the projector comes with composite inputs, stereo audio and single video input in one cable. The TV Out cable for your phone must have composite male connections to connect to the projector. For the test I had to buy the Apple composite TV Out cable kit and this worked perfectly with the projector although it did deter from the portability of the set up due to the mass of cables, but this is more down to Apples kit being long and including a USB charger within the package than a fault of the projector set up.

I am not a cinema or HD expert by any stretch of imagination so I will not even attempt to talk about contrast ratios or anything like that, all I can say is to me the picture was fantastic. Bearing in mind this device is a tiny pocketable projector its is astonishing what this device can produce.

If you are a traveler and spend a lot of time in hotel rooms this device is simply a must buy, now you can take your own video content with you on your phone and then watch it on a 1.5metre screen in minutes it really is that simple to set up. Below I have a short video look round the device and also tried to show what it looks like running however it is very hard to show and not sure how much you can gain from that part of the video but it is below anyway.

Conclusion

The Optoma Pico Pocket Projector is a fantastic tiny projector. As I said earlier if you travel a lot and enjoy watching your own media content then this device is perfect to slip in your briefcase and take along for the ride, no need for pay TV in your hotel room anymore. Not sure if I would rely on this for a business presentation but for personal use I would give this a massive thumbs up.

The Optimo Projector is available now from Clove who were kind enough to loan us a review unit.
