Palm Pre, Sim Free, £450

Here is an article from Mypre.com that’ll get some excited. Seems you’ll be able to pre-order a Palm Pre for £450, sim-free. That’s an attractive price I must say. However, I’m wondering were these sim free phones are fitting into the limited stock levels Palm are talking about.

Our friends across the pond have been waiting patiently to get their hands on the new Palm Pre. They know the Pre will be exclusively available on O2 in the UK, Ireland and Germany, and Movistar in Spain. Unfortunately, the GSM version of this great smartphone from Palm is elusive in price and an exact release date, although the rumors are saying October 30th.

UK-based mobile phone specialist Handtec and London e-tailer m-Phone both have the Palm Pre smartphone up for pre-order SIM free. Handtec is asking £517.49 while lesser known e-tailer m-Phone requires £450. And if you check carefully the Palm Pre features listed at m-Phone, you’ll notice the following remarks; “Camera: 3.2 Megapixels” and “Expansion: Expandable with miniSD memory cards”. So, either they are not aware the Pre does not have those two features, or they know something we don’t. More established e-commerce sites; Expansys and Play.com will offer the SIM-free versions of the Palm Pre soon, although these sites are not quoting a price or taking orders yet.

This might give us an idea of how much the Palm Pre will retail for with an O2 contract, it would have to be considerably cheaper than £450. Otherwise people will just buy the unlocked Sim free version. For many that’s still a lot of money, but for others – in the maket of SIM-free mobiles – that’s a great deal when compared to a SIM-free iPhone 3GS, which goes for something in the region of £600 and up.
