Disappointed supporters send 16 million texts during and after Algeria game

ENG-V-ALG-02

England fans bemoaned the poor outcome of the World Cup match with Algeria in a blaze of text messages. Mobile has once again teamed up with Billmonitor.com, to bring you the mobile text action throughout the game.
A dismal display of inept football from England in the team¹s second game of the World Cup saw fans express their anger and dismay by sending millions of angst-filled texts during the match.
According to billmonitor.com, the new service that helps UK consumers to find the right mobile phone contract, England fans bombarded one another with 1.3 million texts at the moment Capello brought on Shaun Wright-Phillips ahead of fan’s favourite Joe Cole.

Wayne Rooney’s inflammatory remarks at the final whistle towards England’s travelling supporters also coincided with an avalanche of SMS activity, as more than 1.8 million texts were sent.
The total figure of 16 million texts is comparable to England’s opening match, after a game bereft of incident wound itself towards a depressingly familiar conclusion. Disappointed fans sent the most texts as the England players trudged off the pitch.
Hannah Meredith, 28, who works for a large charity in London, said: ‘I was in a pub with really bad reception, but I just had to go outside at half time and tell friends just how annoyed I was. I think I got nearly a dozen texts during the match ¬ and everybody was saying the same thing: England are terrible.’
Stelios Koundouros, founder and director of billmonitor.com, said: ‘As billmonitor.com continues to track Britain’s real-time mobile phone use, I remain excited to see the nation connecting over the match which, despite the 0-0 score, evoked reactions toward the end as strong as the goals in the first match. We look forward to England’s next match with anticipation for a significant spike should England win.’
The sharp spike in SMS use during the game was still not as steep as in the first hours of a New Year. Billmonitor.com estimates that 250 million text messages were sent as UK mobile users welcomed in 2010.
