Book apps for BlackBerry

Tomorrow is World Book Day, a worldwide celebration of books and reading. As lovely as it is to break the spine on a new book, technology now lets us enjoy a good story or two while on the go without having to lug around a heavy tome. Chick-lit, mystery or classics – no matter what you enjoy, there are a wealth of apps related to the literary world for your BlackBerry smartphone. Why not use it as an eReader to read on the train? Or order the latest bestseller from wherever you are and have it delivered to your house?

Check out a few book related apps after the break. You may find one that comes in handy?

Kobo:

Ever sat on the train and spotted somebody reading a book that you have been meaning to buy? Or do you find carrying bulky books around in your handbag a pain in the shoulder? The Kobo application for BlackBerry smartphones brings a virtual library of over 2 million e-books to your device meaning that reading couldn’t be easier. Previews allow you to read a chapter of a book before committing to purchase, while offline reading lets you download and read books on-the-go. Handy for long journeys, work breaks or even just for leisure, Kobo for BlackBerry means that your library travels with you.

If you are interested in new literary works, or want to share your own masterpiece, then the app from Wattpad, the world’s most popular ebook community, is perfect for you. Wattpad, hailed as the ‘YouTube for eBooks’, lets you access hundreds of thousands of original novels, short stories and poems. Some are brilliant, some are good and some would benefit from a sub-editor’s input, but they are all free and you can read them either on the go or download them for offline reading. Support your favourites by voting for them and share on Twitter. Wattpad’s auto-scroll feature is very handy and can be set to the speed you prefer.
The application is available to download for FREE from BlackBerry App World.

Sccope:

Sccope is the perfect shopping assistant app, it checks 10 million prices daily and provides BlackBerry smartphone users with an easy way to shop and compare prices on everything from books to garden equipment and make savings of up to 75 per cent. Shoppers can scan a barcode while in a shop with the built-in reader (using the device’s camera), search for an item by product code, name, brand or browse the wide range of product categories.

The application is available to download for FREE from BlackBerry App World.

My Books:

Ever loaned your favourite book to a friend and then promptly forgotten all about it? Or have you ever been recommended a book and then forgotten the name of it when staring blankly at the shelves in Waterstones? Thought so. This clever little app is a perfect companion for you, the well-meaning but forgetful book lover! It allows you to track all of the books in your list, as well as all of the books you intend to read in the future. You can also add any of the books in your inventory into the ‘books I’ve lent’ list with a note of who you’ve lent it to and when – so you never lose track of your favourite books again. It comes equipped with social media buttons so you can share the books you’ve read/are reading on Facebook or Twitter. BlackBerry Torch users can scan the EAN 13 code of any book and add it to their directory with no need for typing!

The application is available to download for £3.35 from BlackBerry App World.
