The more observant of you will have already noticed and know of this cool device, but with the recent press highlights of it we thought we ought to see just what all the fuss is about!

Well it seems it is a revolutionary bit of kit.

In short the Sony Reader eBook PRS-505 is an electronic book with a very clever screen that is not backlight, and is really thin so it feels a bit like a book and you need light to read from it.  Its internal memory will allow up to 160 ebooks to be stored whilst memory card slots allow for even more expansion.  With an impressive battery life, the Reader will allow for 6,800 page turns.

Our friends at Clove Technology expect to have the Sony Reader eBook PRS-505  in stock this coming week.

      Great article but I'll be amazed if e-books take off. It may suit the purpose better than a laptop - but who wants to lug yet another piece of technology around with them?

      I bought one of these only yesterday 10/10/08, and I was very impressed with the design and the ease of use, so much so that it is going to be a Christmas gift for my mother-in-law who is aged 86, she reads 100's of books and storage is becoming a big problem. my only concern is the cost and the availability of new ebooks. Why in the UK do we have to charge so much for items that cost so little in the USA? and why is it only outdated 'classics' that can be obtained?

      Good to see you guys finally have a look at the Reader.

      There are a lot of others available, with WH Smith offering the Cybook Gen3 for an excellent price.

      As for buying books, I and many other users have been purchasing ebooks from US Based sellers, and the price difference is huge.

      The main problem is that the Sony only supports Sony's own format or ePub which requires Adobe DE. A Better option is to buy books in another format and format shift them.

      @Glenn

      I would suggest you consider getting the Cybook Gen3 instead of the Sony as you can buy books easily from US stores like Fictionwise and bookonboard without having to convert them.

      WH Smith has a excellent deal on it, and is worth checking out.

      What really interests me is the fact this has been around in the US for over a year and a new version is being laucnhed there on 14th November. This version has a touch screen for turnign the page and a light for reading in the plus capacity for 350 books and even longer battery life. I called Sony in the UK to find out when we could expect it here and the answer was they don't know. I was also informed that if I bought the new US version it wouldn't work here due to software issues that they are loking at, nor would I be able to buy the e-books from the US Sony store which has a great selection at far cheaper prices to Waterstones.
      Is anyone able to advise on whether I was being spun a line to stop me buying from the US website?
