HTC Touch Pro Review

The long awaited HTC flagship is here; I have pestered, hounded and harassed Matt for a play on this device since we all heard about it last year. Now I have it, can it live up to the hype? Is it the ultimate device?

Introduction

Following on from the release of the HTC Diamond, the HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) is as much high end as you are going to find at the moment. The price tag does match its status and to prove itself as value for money it has to be near perfect......

What's in the Box?

  • The HTC Touch Pro handset
  • 1350mAh battery
  • USB Sync/charge cable
  • Mains charger (USB style)
  • Application CD and user guide CD
  • Spare stylus
  • Leather slip case
  • Wired headset
  • Printed user guide and warranty information

Have a look at Matt's HTC Touch Pro unboxing video for a more detailed analysis.

HTC Touch Pro specification:

  • Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
  • Qualcomm MSM 7201A @ 528MHz
  • 512MB ROM / 256MB RAM
  • 7.2MB HSDPA / HSUPA
  • 2.8" VGA screen
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth 2.0 with EDR
  • eGPS
  • 3.1MP Camera with flash
  • Forward facing VGA camera
  • G-sensor (same as the Diamond)
  • FM Radio
  • TV-Out feature
  • microSD card slot (thank goodness!)
  • 1350mAh battery
  • 51x99x17mm
  • 165 grams

General

The Touch Pro has obviously been designed to keep it as uncluttered as possible, it has minimal buttons and relies on the keyboard and touchscreen to access the usual functions. For example there is no dedicated camera button and no soft keys. The Unit does feel on the heavy side but not in an unpleasant way, as it is so small, it fools you in to thinking that is not heavy at all, it is most definitely pocket friendly.

The top of the Touch Pro has the more sensitive and easier to press Power up button.

The Right hand side has only the non – telescopic stylus, being magnetised it is drawn into its housing as you insert it.

The bottom of the device is the mini USB connector, the mic and a small reset button.

The left of the unit has the volume up and down button.

The back of the phone has the 3.2 megapixel camera, flash light, tiny speaker grill and also a semi hidden strap holder.

The flat 2.8” VGA is found the front of the device, along with a tiny forward facing camera for self portrait photos and video calls found next to the earpiece.

There is only 4 buttons at the bottom, these being the obligatory talk and end keys, which also have a long press function as well, covered shortly. There is a ‘Home’ key and a ‘back’ key featured as well. In the middle of these is the Navigation control, which is both press sensitive and touch sensitive. This acts as a 5 way directional pad and enter button, but also as a touch sensitive dial pad, for zooming in and out, on top of that it can be used to control some camera functions as well.

Hidden behind this is the slide out hardware keyboard.

The device itself appears well made, it is solid and comfortable to use. The screen is, of course, a fingerprint hoarder and wiping it clean wasn’t that easy, personally I think a screen protector is much needed in this respect, but not on the review model. It is definitely quick and responsive, both in Windows and other applications.

One point here is that for some reason, probably form HTC have decided to hide the microSD slot underneath the back casing, so you do have to remove the back to swap or remove the card, but no biggy really.

Review

First off it has to be said this IS a very nice device, the screen is a pleasure at 480x640 the VGA is sharp and clear and a vast improvement to the usual 240x320. It is touch sensitive and is very responsive, I found that I had to resort to the stylus very little which is a great plus for me. Remember to tap and then drag, it works much better than drag alone.

The HTC user interface is also easy to use and covers all the practical applications that are used regularly. With quick access to menus such as People, Messages, Email, Internet etc. tap the bottom scroll bar and drag your finger sideways to access all the other application such as Photos, Music, Weather, Settings and finally a customisable Programs. For me it would be nice to be able to customise the scroll bar itself for a more personal touch.

clip_image002clip_image004clip_image006

The animated weather screen adds a nice touch, and there is also a dedicated You Tube icon as well.

The Touch Pro is Windows 6.1 professional as standard, and as such is fairly standard, programs wise there is not a great deal out of the ordinary, there is Google maps preloaded, but I could not resist downloading a Tomtom trial which worked brilliantly as was really responsive, and the screen was easier to see being clear, even in bright sunlight. Google maps of course worked equally well. By the way I am not an expert but I think it is the new pin dropping animation version, an arrow drops down anyway, maybe the clever of you can confirm this?

There is a Jetcet Print program allowing you to send and print documents, images, files etc. direct to a wireless network or Bluetooth enabled printer.

An MP3 trimmer application, which allows you to shorten songs and then save your work, as a new file or assign as a ringtone.

Opera 9.5 also installed as standard is a joy on the screen as well with added ability to automatically rotate screen from landscape to portrait, a quick double tap on the screen zooms in to the selected area in a clear and precise way.

touch_pro_bottom_shot_open

World card mobile is also include which allows a picture to be taken of a business card and then save the information contained on the card as a contact.

Settings included as extras are G-sensor which once calibrated detects when the device is tilted and turned automatically, doing away with the need to rotate the screen manually. One small down point here is that while driving I prefer to have the screen in landscape to be able to use Tomtom and also my car holder fits better that way! Unfortunately the function to rotate the screen manually has been removed so, the only way to achieve this is to have the keyboard open, as soon as you close the keyboard it flicks back to portrait. Annoying.

Also you can assign the end key on a long key press to achieve different functions such as a quick menu, device lock, vibrate or Airplane mode at the press of a button.

I do miss a dedicated camera button, I can understand that this is done for form but maybe function would be a little better. The camera itself I found unremarkable, at 3.2 megapixel it is OK, I found the autofocus to be a bit sensitive, the idea is to touch it not press it until the autofocus has done its thing and turned green, pressing the enter button (middle d-pad button) then takes the picture. This took a bit of practice to get used to. Unlike the Diamond, the Touch Pro has a LED mobile light to illuminate subjects in the dark.

touch_pro_angled_left_closed

Another nice feature of the Touch pro that I haven’t seen before is, when a call comes in you can place the phone face down on a surface to mute the ring. Handy if you have forgotten to turn it off in a meeting etc.

The external speaker on the device I found not to be the best, whether it’s the fact that there is only a tiny slot or whether the quality is not as good as it could be, it does sound a little muffled and not all that loud, this could be off the back of reviewing the Zinc II which as really loud. Maybe this is something for HTC to look at in the future. But overall the earpiece sound quality was fine and worked well, I agree with Matt that the signal strength seems better than usual, I generally get a good signal wherever I am locally, but two known poor areas for me worked with 2 bars.

Battery life for me I found to be 2 days max, heavy use means charging daily, especially with Sat nav use.

Now the issues I have seen and heard about the TouchFLO 3D, for me it works fine, it is snappy and responsive, I have not tried the tweaks that claim to make it faster, as I did not find the need to. Scrolling and swiping the screen produced the appropriate responses to a more than satisfactory standard. I suppose it would be good to hear from anyone who has dabbled with the tweaks?

The Phone function on the HTC Touch Pro, is also an improvement on previous models, it is simple to use and very clear and professional looking. There is an issue with the fact that the screen dims during a call, supposedly to conserve power, also annoying I know Matt mentioned that a registry hack can stop this; a bit of a simpler answer would be to have it in settings, as an option?

The keyboard, as you may already know is not my strong point, I have used it and found it one of the best that I have used, the keys even though small as well defined and well laid out, the extra rows for dedicated numbers etc are much better and user friendly. This device has the same problem of the backlight as well as the previous units I have tested, why can’t they have an option to extend the light time? I did find that even a novice like me soon got some speed up and even hitting the wrong keys on purpose didn’t phase the applications either, as it is intuitive enough to correct even subtle errors. Overall I am very impressed with the design and the functionality. If I were being really picky I would have liked it to be a tad slimmer?

Conclusion

Can HTC Touch Pro live up to the hype? I think it can, it is by far the best phone I have tested; I think it is a great size, not too big or too small. It has all the functionality and speed that I need day to day.

The price tag? Well, anything worth buying is invariably not cheap, and this is no exception, it is relatively expensive in the PDA world, but it is probably the best on the market at this time.

Is it the Ultimate device? It is very close, I am sure they could get it a little thinner in time, the camera and rear speaker could do with an upgrade, in my opinion, that apart it is very impressive.

You can probably tell I like it and I don’t think there will be many people who won’t. Would I buy one? Here’s the rub, I am still not convinced that I need the keyboard that bad, can I justify paying another £200 odd for this addition over the HTC Diamond? Or would the smaller form of the Diamond prove to be more functional for me? Decisions, decisions.....perhaps I should wait and see what the Samsung and the Sony turn out like? Will it ever end?

Conclusion again - I have agreed with Matt to have a play with his Diamond, before he sells it to buy one of these Pro’s, to see which is better for me. So watch out for a Diamond and Tytn II going for sale shortly! The search continues.

Thanks Jonathan, I am really sorry that I am unable to return your test unit, unfortunately I... eerrmm... seem to have mislaid it somewhere.

Hopefully, I will find it in a month or 2?

Any chance you could send me another one?

"Well, anything worth buying is invariably not cheap"

Actually fruit pastilles are buy one get one free at tescos - cheap, and worth buying.

If I was still in the WM world, this would have to be my device - the keypad/board-less diamond just didn't cut it for me. This is fantastic though.

Good review though Steve, and keep checking the site for my N96 review soon ;)

Nice review. I took a look at the User Guide available on the HTC site and noticed that the Remote Desktop application is not listed. However, I believe it is available on the Diamond. If so, this seems like a strange omission for a "pro" device.

Can you confirm if this application is on the Pro ?

It's a lovely machine and I would say the best on the market just now, the responsiveness is great but oh I miss a headphone socket, that nearly became a deal-breaker for me, now I have to buy an adapter to allow me to listen and charge at the same time, big mistake HTC.

Also I don't find the keyboard slide mechanism as solid as I expected, theres too much movement in it. Last gripe is the SD card, I didn't realise how much I swapped data cards around from computer, to camera, to PDA, it sucks having to remove the back.

Pecking this on my "regular" Diamond and darn that keyboard looks sweet.. Did I fall for the thin one too soon?

Anyway keyboard or no, some extra battery life and especially the sd slot are the difference.

It's a Diamond with a keyboard and an SD slot.

A great review, thanks!

Do you have any feedback yet on the Diamond in comparison? I've got to make a decision on the Diamond/Pro and this would be a big help.

(although, to behonest, the SD card might swing it)

Cheers!

i would be interested to know if it appears as a USB drive when plugged into a PC. if so, then the SD card access is not a problem, otherwise removing the back is trouble. note: previous model did not appear as usb drive (although some commercial sw exists for this).

the other thing is that i found the easy SIM card release of the previous model handy. looks like this is more tricky to remove it.

can the side buttons be used to scroll? like the old scroll wheel, because this was handy before.

good review, thanks.

Steve, you said in your review - "Unfortunately the function to rotate the screen manually has been removed so, the only way to achieve this is to have the keyboard open, as soon as you close the keyboard it flicks back to portrait. Annoying." - but it can be done....SKKV Software (they of the SKTools fame), have a freeware utility called G-Sen that auto-rotates the screen depending on the orientation of the device. See details at http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_util.html - there's a video of it too.

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks for this really useful review - esp the "form over function" comment. My hesitation in going for the Diamond is that the battery - which has been described as "weedy" - is presumably underpowered just to let the phone be so thin. I would rather have the few millimeters of thickness for a useable battery life!

Hi, I am new to the site and this question may have been asked, if so sorry...

I have looked at HTC website and it shows the phone to be Quad band and then when I look at GSM Arena it shows it as Tri band, even Expansys details the phone as Tri, sometimes I think if a matter of which site you look at as then Band they give is not that accurate.

So can someone how has the phone confirm if the phone is a Tri or a Quad, as I am desperately holding back to getting either the HTC Touch Pro or the Omnia i900.

Thank You

Oh... I like the reviews gives me lots to think about!

To : Paul, firstly, I didn't think these phones were available yet, and secondly, your comment 'worst phone ever' is worthless unless you explain why. Otherwise, people will just say you are likely an Apple Fanboy etc.

I too would be interested to hear more about a comparison with the Diamond. I do not even need a camera/ flash, and am only just getting into mobile browsing/ e-mail, so I don't suppose I'll be on it every 5 minutes... meaning I may not need that keyboard. Also, can anyone comment on the extra heft and depth of the Touch Pro? I guess it wouldn't be noticable in a briefcase or suit jacket pocket, but will the Touch Pro weigh my jeans down and annoy me, given that it will be replacing a 100 gram Nokia phone?
09/09/08 @ 19:58
JD, Thanks for your comments - you can get the Touch Pro SIM free at the moment.

You might want to have a look at our Diamond vs Pro post - not much to it but there are some photos there for you to see.

First of all, very nice review.
So, Diamond or Pro?? Well, 4Gb internal mem on the Diamond or MicroSD card on the PRO! No competition for someone like myself who has both a TyTn and TyTn II and absolutely requires the more memory and the more user friendly MicroSD option. The Diamond comes across to me as HTC's Direct response to the I-foney! And, in more ways than one it will beat the apple tosh into submission, however for those of us who use the WM Devices as work companions as well as play tools, then the Pro is a must. I don't really need a keyboard but I prefer to have one as it is now part of what I'd expect from a proffesional device, I do however need more storage than 4GB and that alone has convinced me that I will have the PRO.
For those that are wondering, someone I know at Orange has informed me that the Pro will be due to them shortly, however, that still could mean November!!
Not sure what prices to expect but for me an upgrade to a Diamond is Free, but my price plan is quite high.

I am very keen to get this phone for the additional ram it offers on the Diamond and my current WM 6.1 Trinity. This means I should be able to run tom tom 7 smoothly and Opera without the 'out of memory' messages. As far as I know it is tri band only. SD slot is definitely a clincher not to mention the G-sensor. Price is madness though as in 3 months there will be something else on the horizon and £350 touch pros on ebay! Hurry up Orange and start offering this bad boy.

One question, I use my voice dialing button ALL the time on my Trinity as Microsoft Voice Command is brilliant. Can you assign voice dialing to the end key long press?

To be honest, the keypad isn't all that essential for me, but having MicroSD and video out makes all the difference. Plus, the Sprint version in the States is only $50 more than the diamond... :)

I wish I could get a Diamond with SD and video out, or a pro without the keypad just to save on space.... :-P

I recently had the chance to upgrade my old phone... I was left with 2 choices, the 3G IPhone and the HTC Touch Pro. I am using HTC phones for 1 year now and the latest Touch Pro (Raphael) made me stay loyal with HTC. I weighed down the features and functionality of the IPhone and the Touch Pro and the Touch Pro surely has the 3G IPhone's capabilities but with an added plus. 3rd party apps like Skype and Java runs on this phone. Expandable memory (microSD slot). The extremely useful Remote Desktop option. Has a TVOut feature and a JETCET printing software. Highly responsive touch screen. You can also SMS or browse the net with just one hand (Phone Keypad feature on the touch screen) which is quite difficult on IPhone's QWERTY keyboard. The hefty price definitely matches the Touch Pro's capability as a high end phone and pocket pc. The downside for this phone is its backlight if you are using the phone under 3D TouchFLO mode. The backlight turns off by itself after you leave the phone hanging even just for 10 sec. This is to conserve battery. It is quite annoying if you are dialing a very long number. Everything else is just perfect.

Anyone know how it does during calls??

Hey Matt and all!! Great review.
I recently bought a Touch Pro off ebay (I'm in Australia).
Your review made me choose the Pro over the diamond, mainly for the microSD and the larger battery.

So far, the battery seems to last around 2 days with 3-4hrs of net use, a few sms's and calls and playing around with the settings and games.

The only gripe I have with it so far is that the speaker is quite quiet when people ring you, although I haven't tried speakerphone yet. The other thing I need to get used to is using the camera (especially in landscape) because I always seem to be changing camera modes instead of actually taking the photo. Oh well, more practice required.

Anybody could advice is this bug had been fixed already?

No idea when Orange are making this available, some reports suggested the end of September but as that's now gone by who knows!

During a call the screen is blanked and touchscreen disabled. This can be changed through the registry though.

Unsure about the voice dialing as I don't have a Pro here at the moment - I'll see if I can find out though!

Does anyone know when the HTC Touch Pro will be available for sprint customers? I know the diamond is out but you have to purchase over the phone or online. Anyone know when it will be available to check out in sprint stores?

Been reading all these reviews. From what I take from it, the diamond and the pro look exactly alike but the major differences is that the pro has a sliding keyboard and an SD slot. Am I correct?

Just an extra question. How do either of these phones compare to the Palm Treo Pro?

I got this phone in September from Vodafone, having waiting between the end of my previous contract (18 months with
a superb Nokia E61) I absolutely hated this LULU of a machine. It is effectively a geeky mobile computing
brick; sorry device with pathetic staying/battery capability, and a clunky Windows Mobile device with a phone as
an afterthought.

Thankfully Vodafone kindly replaced the phone with a Nokia E71 - superb machine that actually lasts a day at the
office.

Never touch this "thing" with a barge pole. I hated it.

Thank you for a useful review. I currently have a TyTN II (SIM free) which I purchased from Clove. I think the TyTN is a great machine and had high hopes of the Touch Pro given its technical specs and your review.

I was very disappointed when I started up a contract with Vodaphone and received the Touch Pro. Out of the box it was extremely sluggish in comparison with the TyTN II which seemed a lot quicker. Basic stuff like the response of the screen to the stylus touch or how long it took to load a program up, e.g. messaging was really surprising. I also found the virtual key board in portrait mode a bit stupid - one key has two + letters on it so you have to repeatedly press that key to get the letter you want. I preferred the old keyboard with the TyTN II which had a key for each letter or you pressed shift or the number key to go to the numbers. This keyboard is still available...in landscape mode which is the mode that I am normally in when I slide out the keyboard! Which makes it a bit pointless really.

I also wonder how much the Vodafone customisations slow the device down and whether anyone knows how to reflash the ROM with the base HTC image so I can clear out the Vodafone layer. I did the same thing with an SPV from Orange and found that it ran a lot quicker.

thanks in advance for any assistance

Hello,

I've never had a pda/touch device before because it just didn't had all the functionality I wanted. I've read many reviews and comments today and this device seems to have everything.

Just a few more questions about it:
1. If I answer a call - is there still a possibility to lookup a phone number in the phone book (in case someone's asking for it)?
2. It's nice when things work. What if my windows mobile software crashes and needs to be reinstalled.. is there any image available for download to install a fresh copy of windows and all the additional software (somekind of "go to factory state")?
3. Is there a speed dial option?
