No 16GB Samsung Omnia for the UK?

Lots of you out there seem to be waiting for the launch of the Samsung i900 Omnia before making up your minds between buying that or the HTC Touch Diamond.

Today I heard some news though, that comes as something of a disappointment. Apparently Samsung are not going to release the 16GB version of the Omnia in the UK, only the 8GB version.

We now have official pricing for the 8GB unit. It will be £399 + VAT, with first stock arriving 18th August. Because Samsung are not releasing the 16GB version Clove Technology thought they would come to the rescue with a special offer to help boost the memory available by offering a package with a FREE 4GB microSD card.

This offer is valid on all purchases of the 8GB Omnia, but you need the voucher code: SAM8GB0708

Simply use the code about when buying the 8GB Omnia and Clove shall send the machine with a free 4GB card!

I was looking forward to buying the Samsung i900 Omnia but have now (reading your blog that UK will only receive 8 GB version) decided to purchase the 16GB iphone as Samsung are only releasing the 8GB i900 into the UK (stupid).
I'm rather surprised that this is the case as you only have to try and buy a 16GB iphone-they are all sold (loads of 8gb on shelves)out so why try and shift 8GB Samsung's when people are demanding 16GB is rather sillier than not offering the punter a choice of 8 or 16 GB options in te first place!

Never mind we have an iphone that wont do a lot with 16GB offered by O2 and Samsung i900 that has it/can do it all all with only 8GB. Great marketing!!

No-one knows what version, and when, of the Omnia will be released in the UK. Try contacting Samsung to get it cleared up - it's impossible to find out! Why so inefficient?

Iv heard all sorts about when its getting released and Samsung are telling poeple different stories, i spoke to one person one day and then the next day i was told something else, if they only bring the 8gb out in the uk il be really dissapointed but il still get it, the phone takes the 16gb SDHC cards so it'll have 8gb built in and 16gb card which is 24gb which still kick's iphones butt!

Yeah is it really that big an issue, it is a great phone and has a SDHC slot so you can add more memory.

Does anybody know what Network Providers will supply the Omnia in the UK?

I have spoken to samsung about what networks they will have it on and they say they will have it available to all uk networks so i guess its down to the networks now. Hopefuly they get there finger out pretty quick, im going to the first network that offers it so first come first serve. i still think that samsung should reconsider the 8gb only in uk brain fart they have had and make both available.

Do you think the interested uk parties hsould bombard there networks and samsung themselves with requests to have the 16gb version in the uk? Do you think they would listen?

Orange UK now has the 16GB version of the Omnia in stock (ordered mine today and can't wait!). Apparently the 16GB version is exclusive to Orange.
18/08/08 @ 09:51
Actually I think the 16GB is for UK notworks and the 8GB for SIM free but we're seeking confirmation!

I have had a Samsung Omnia for 2 weeks and it is the 16gb model from Samsung UK themselves (long story). Awesome phone and you wont be dissapointed. I understand O2 and vodafone launch the phone next week.

Cool your jets fan boys this phone is seriously flawed. Just to clear up the memory issue. The 16GB version is simply acheived by chucking a memory card in the box which as we all know actually costs probably less than £15.

I have it on o2 and I wish I had got the iphone. Loads of pc compatibility issues and minor glitches. Worst of all is the Samsung manual, it is an adobe version. Alsoin typical windows fashion, find out for yourself if you can. I wish I had waited for the N96 I have just given my N95 to my daughter and regret it.

It might great phone for new contract holder but beware if you r upgrading from Orange they dont have one in stock for there old customers but they do have one for new one's.
I have recently upgraded my contract and still waiting for Omnia from orange. I have called couple of time only they can say is , I WILL RECEIVE TEXT WHEN ITS IN STOCK BUT IF I NEED ONE URGENTLY I HAVE TO ORDER ONLINE PAYING MORE. SEEMS THEY DONT CARE ABOUT OLD CUSTOMERS.

No-one is offering the 16gb phone. Orange website is a mess. It's not in their deals, but if you click on i-phone alternatives, you can see it but you can't buy it. I found another way in where it said that the omnia 16gb is no longer offered by Orange. I can't find a genuine 16gb contract anywhere, on any network.

SIM-free and choose your contract makes it massively more expensive (£350 extra) than an 8gb offered on a contract. I'm a mobile phone novice and a low user of calls and texts, but want an all-in-one to include music, pictures, sat-nav and mobile email and web. The Omnia seems to be far ahead of the game .

If I go SIM-free I can save money by staying PAYG. My current calling and texting usage is £10 per month. So the phone and PAYG would cost £620 over 18 months (about £100 more than an 8gb on the best contract I have been offered). I'm not sure if I can get full use of the data side. I would use wi-fi for email and web where possible, but there will always be times when I need to use the phone to download. I travel a lot in the UK and abroad.

Here's my q. Given all the above, am I better off settling for an 8gb and extra external storage that needs managing, or going 16gb SIM-free on a PAYG?.
How well will the data download side work on PAYG, especially abroad, and who would be the best provider for this?

What's the big downer with offering the 16gb on contract anyway? OK so O2 and T-Mobile are excluding it because of anti-competitive contracts with iphone and Google, but surely Orange can see the gap in the market?
