Orange unlimited data packages confirmed

There has been a lot of talk about unlimited data tariffs recently especially those rumoured to be coming to Orange. I've been trying to get Orange to confirm their position on unlimited data for a few days and in the end found the information I needed in the July catalog.

As you can see in the scan above, unlimited mobile browsing seems to be available on all packages that are over £35 per month but it would appear that you have to sign up for a 18 month contract in order to qualify.

I'm still waiting to hear from Orange to establish what, if anything, they are going to do for business customers on talk share tariffs but I'll report back when I find out!

This comes a bit late - a month ago I switched from Orange to T-Mobile because Orange couldn't come anywhere near Web'n'Walk Plus. The Orange retentions person said that they were losing a lot of customers because of their data plans.

One other point, they're careful to stipulate 'mobile' internet browsing - anyone smell a ridiculous 'fair usage' policy coming?

"seems to be available on all packages that are over £35 per month"

unless you go with the dolphin package where you can pay exactly £35 a month and get unlimited data

But what do they mean by 'unlimited mobile internet browsing'? Is it exactly what it sounds like, so it doesn't include data transfer for email, weather, live messenger and other mobile apps? Or is it really 'unlimited data'?

Thanks for sharing this, btw. I'm planning on getting an HTC Touch Pro when it's out and want a decent contract to go with it.

Just got off the phone with one of Orange's data people (after a LOT of faffing around)

Wanted to confirm what the Ts&Cs were on this new unlimited package, and whether there were restrictions like not being able to use your phone as a 3G/HSDPA modem etc..

Turns out, in order to help drive sales of their "Mobile Broadband" products, this unlimited ONLY applies to usage on your phone. Using various packet inspection techniques etc, apparently they can tell if you're using the device as a modem for your laptop/UMPC etc..

*Allegedly* this detection can be circumvented by making use of the WMWifiRouter app or by some complicated Proxy configuration (on phone and PC) but I've not read anything conclusive one way or t'other..

If they are using packet inspection and the likes, no application, proxy, etc will help you circumvent it (aside from some encryption, possibly).

There IS a fair useage policy, and it's 250MB a month. whihc seems a bit low to me. I've just got an HTC diamond and it chews throught it all quite fast if you'v got the weather app set to update automatically, and if you're viewing the fancy full web on the opera browser.

Could do better, Orange! (as usual)
