HTC Touch Diamond review (Part 3) - "Touch-flo 3D"
One thing that sets the HTC Touch Diamond apart from other Windows Mobile devices is the unique Touch-Flo 3D user interface. This builds upon the success HTC had with the original Touch and later the Touch Dual and Touch Cruise and integrates further into the Windows Mobile OS.
Lets take a closer look at the Touch-Flo 3D interface by examining each screen in turn. Note that I've reduced the size of the screen shots by 50%.
Home Screen
This screen effectively replaces the Today screen and shows you the date, time and Operator name. You'll also see that it tells you when your alarm is set for, has a link to call history and shows you the next event in your diary. Unlike the today screen this page wont show you whether or not you have unread email or SMS on the main page but if you look to the bottom the number of unread emails is shown in a green circle over the email button.

People
This tab allows you to add your favourite people or contacts to a roladex style system that lets you thumb through your contacts if your contact has a photograph associated with it then it will be displayed here, otherwise you get to choose what image to display instead.

Messages
This tab provides you with a preview of your text messages and gives you quick access to compose a new text message.

The mail page is where you access your email accounts. As you can see in the image below you get a preview of the last message in your inbox on the screen. The icons down the side denote the three email accounts I have configured and the icon at the top starts a new email message. Buttons at the bottom of the screen allow you go to the inbox for the choosen account or, from the menu button, send/receive, switch accounts or start a new message.

Internet
The internet page is pretty self explanatory with a link to the web browser (Opera 9.5) and the excellent YouTube client.

Photos and Videos
The photos and videos page lets you browse through any photos you have stored on your device providing they are in the My Documents/My Pictures folder. You can scroll though your photos by swiping your finget up and down on the page then you can tap on the image to bring it up full screen. Once you have the image fullscreen you can zoom in and out by spinning your finger around the dpad and you can move the picture around the screen by dragging it.
On this page you also have an icon to start the camera in either still or video mode. At the bottom of the screen you have buttons to open the album, which gives you a typical preview of images or you can start a slideshow of the currently displayed images.

Music
The music page give you direct access to the music files saved on your phone so there is no need to go into media player, you can select songs or whole albums to listen to from this page and you even get to see the album art for your files if they have them.
You navigate through stored music on this page in much the same way as you would an iPod or iTunes, by swiping your finger across the screen. Buttons at the bottom get you in to your media library or the menu allows you to access controls for repeat, shuffle, track properties, playlist and audio booster.

Weather
Once again this page it pretty self explanatory. The main image tells you what the weather is like today (there are some nice animations to be seen here) with other buttons offering 5 day forecast and the menu allows you to add/remove locations, change the temperature units and change how the information is updated.

Settings
The settings page does what it says on the tin. From here you can sync with ActiveSync, edit the sound settings, alter the background image or wallpaper, open up Comm Manager or download updated weather information. Each of the pages accessed from here are also HTC customised pages that are very easy to use and navigate.

Programs
The last of the main touch-flo 3D pages is the Programs tab. Here you can add shortcuts to the programs that you most commonly use. You can add up to 18 shortcuts to this list and you can easily add or remove them as you see fit.

Comm Manager
Finally I'm going to briefly mention Comm Manager. This is yet another example of how HTC have done away with the standard Windows Mobile interface and replaced it with their own customised version. This is a welcome change and shows you at a glance whether the phone is on or off, if your data conection is active or if you have WiFi on. I think that new WM users are going to find these pages a lot easier to use.

I think that's enough on the Touch-Flo 3D interface for now. This review unit has to go back in just a few more days but fortunately I'm told that my retail unit is on its way. I'll tell you more about the retail version as soon as it arrives and I'll let you know what the differences are, if indeed there are any!

The Diamond and Pro sound fabulous, I am hoping the Pro will be the long awaited upgrade for my 2.5 yr old T-Mobile Vario 1.
Do these devices have USB host capabilites, so I can plug in a USB memory card reader or camera or mouse device etc.
Also...
Can you have charger and headphones or VGA out plugged in at the same time, e.g. does it have a USB splitter or hub?
Thanks.
This is an issue when you want to select numbers to action voicemail commands from the keypad.
Let me know if you find a fix - there's nothing in the power or background light settings to describe this 'feature'.

If you get time could you do another video of the on screen keyboard for sending text messages please?
Wondering how it compares to the iPhone's on screen qwerty.

How is data entry on the new screen? I was not too keen on the keyboard with the TyTn II and felt the whole device was too big so opted for the Touch Dual with a 20 key Suretype pad. I think I could be won over to a screen only device, if data input was good enough: I also have an iGo Bluetooth Keyboard for serious entry. How does the onscreen keyboard compare with the iPhone? Does it try and guess which letters have been mistyped?
My main WM application is Pocket Informant, which was wonderful on the VGA screen of my old PDA. I'm sure v8 will be great on the Touch Diamond. Any experience so far?
Without the extra memory sort, figured they may be a problem only using the 4gb internal memory....

Actually, this question may be redundant for many, as it is for me, because (or so I assume) although the Diamond will be SIM-free and thus will work with existing cards, whereas the iPhone won't. Is that correct, does anyone know? If it is, I won't be looking at an iPhone until my current contract runs out, in about a year's time (which, of course, is a strong argument against taking out long contracts, but that's another question...).
Richard
is fantastic. But when it came to transfering all my
contacts, music and pictures across it seems to save on
the phone memory and not the 4gb. Any help on how to
change this?
To delete an email account simple go in to the inbox for the account then to Menu > Tools > Options. You'll then see a list of accounts on the screen. Tap and hold on the account you want to remove and then tap delete.

The alarm: yeah, I am still not sure how to turn off when it is ringing!!!!
Matt
My only gripe is that the reception is a bit poor, I've moved from Vodafone to Orange so I'm not sure if thats the problem or not, but I don't make many calls anyway, just wanted this phone!!!!
Great stuff!!!
Has anyone got a fix for this yet - a mate has suggested its tilt sensor dependant AND sort of sensible - stops your ears operating the touch screen - but its annoying!
that they had replaced the black background with a nasty red one. Any ideas on how
I can get it to the style\background shown on the screenshots above.
Like the phone up to now.
Change the background under settings > today and there should be a series of themes under appearance. HTC Black is the standard theme.
Matt
Thanks,
Suraj
That said, you can have mine - its a bag of sh1t!
Battery life is about 5 mins, the prob with the back light going off is really annoying, there is a lag between button touch and action, so you end up pressing twice and navigating to the wrong fucnction, there's no memory slot (and whats 4gb these days!)
To uninstall Telmap if you click on start, then settings, then at the bottom of the page click on the system tab, then click on remove programs, click on telmap navigator and make sure it is highlited and them click on remove.
I hope this helps.
oh and I too am annoyed beyond belief with the screen off problem...answer phone use is totally frustrating
Is there anyway to allocate ringtones/music tracks to callers like with the Ericsson? Save bothering to get the phone out.
How do you call a number from a received text?
Struggling with alarm clock. Seems to ring once then go off. Not sure cos it has yet to wake me up!! Still having to carry K800 to make sure I wake up - it rings forever unless you cancel it.
How can I get a new screen protector? And how do you get old one off without damage? Made a right mess putting the first one on, unless you like the bubble effect.
Really informative site thanks. Found it via you tube.
For the people above who need to press a number while in a call, simply press the back arrow (above the hang-up key) and it will bring the screen back for you to press "keypad".
Also, if you take the stylus out while in a call it will open a notepad screen for you to jot down a number or an address - saves having to rush to find a pen! It will put your call on loudspeaker while they read it out. When putting the stylus back, the phone returns to regular speaker and saves the note under the name of the caller - handy!
Alarm is a pain in the butt, though Matt is quite right in that you can go to Settings>Sounds>Advanced>Notifications and then change "Event" to "reminders" and you have the option to tick "Display message on screen". Frick knows why this isn't enabled as default....
Wifi is great, you can switch it on and it will turn off your 3g connection and use the free wifi connection instead to save the pennies.
TomTom works great with the built in GPS receiver, good signal all the time.
Easy to text using the on-screen keyboard and very responsive. Only the iPhone beats it by guessing what you meant if you mistype a letter, currently you have to delete the letter and try again.
Calendar was a big point for me as I rely a lot on this for work appointments and it works a treat. Reminders of your next appointment show on the homescreen, and you can set the reminder time easily.
All in all - a great phone for which I'm only paid £80 and then a £22 a month contract with unlimited texts, phone insurance, 300 minutes and unlimited browsing evenings and weekends (though had to take a 24 month contract for that to not cost extra) all on Orange.
BAD points - poor battery life (though there is a bigger battery available at the cost of phone width). Also, Orange are crap at releasing firmware updates, and you can't use the HTC official ones without first running a (unofficial) little program on your phone to kind of "unblock" it.
thks for your email - very helpful - could you elaborate on this
"you can't use the HTC official ones without first running a (unofficial) little program on your phone to kind of "unblock" it."
cheers
Thanks a lot
By the way can anyone tell me if and where I can download any new program for my diamond, such as new games, tom tom satnav etc.???
thanx Alan
Try looking under settings and 'today' and on the 'items' tab have a look at what items you have selected. You should select ONLY TouchFlo 3D from this list.
Matt
and i got my diamond from phones4u
I have now had three new devises and cannot get my music to maintain a good quality sound. starts off ok, but then sounds very tinny.
can you help?
I can't set the alarm on my Diamond I input all the details Time and day and notification type, even my notification settings for reminder are all ticked. Also for my appointments' or tasks if the reminder is set it doesn't ring or notify me in anyway.
Please someone...
Can't get the today screen to change. I've gone through the process of settings/today/items and clicking the ones i want, but everytime i hit 'ok' in the top left, and go to TODAY it hasn't registered. Then when i go back they've all reverted back to their unclicked state. ?
Can't seem to delete email. I set up an 'outlook email' by mistake and it won't go away.
The 'gmail' account i set up will no longer send and receive. i9've checked the settings but can't seem to figure out why. It either saaaysy error synchronizing or connection failed. ?
Do I need to buy a special add-on to hook it up to my PC to sync it up? BEcause nothing in the box has a usb end. ?
Also, my alarm won't stop ringing. It finally shuts off on it's own. I followed the advice from above only to find that my phone doesn't have the option the way it was described. I can't toggle anything to 'reminder'. Don't have that option. ?
This forum is amazing. Hope someone can help me out.
I have set "repeat the alarm" and can only stop the ringing by switching off the unit!!
Must be a better way or..not????
Matt
I have had loads of problems with my HTC diamond and my gmail account. First it was set up as imap and ran up a £600 bill with orange (1150 mb in 5 weeks), it was only downloading email headers and was taking 3-4 days to bring the rest of the message down. It seems it was doing something in the background 24/7.
Orange advised setting it up as pop3 which worked ok for a month then it just stopped downloading email one day and when you send/receive now all you get it either "check settings" errors or it connects checks then disconnects like there are no email there but I know there are loads there to download as I can see them on my outlook that's set to imap.
Orange are no help at all they just go through the settings each time I ring, all the settings are correct. I'm running out of ideas and any help that anyone can give would be very much appreciated.
Please help
Thanks
Steve
I have just received my HTC Diamond and have tried loading my music, via the sync process outlined in the manual. I cant seem to access my music through the touchflo 3d music menu, I can only see the default tunes. I can access my tues one at a time by going through the library, but cant seem to be able to flick through my music files using the finger swipe method. I am required to access the next album by going back into the library.
Can somebody help please.
Thanks
Heath
It's absolutely useless at waking me up and i too have had to carry another phone or an old fashioned alarm clock around to wake me up!
Mine is orange and have had three handsets and they all have done it, the last one also did something weird where it would only show a notification in the top bar making it very difficult to snooze it, especially bleary eyed.
I can't find any tweaks anywhere, and i don't really want a separate alarm program. The only way around it is to use one of the longer alarm tones and that lasts for a grand total of 40 seconds!
Love the phone, hate the alarm, it's going to get me fired one day ;)
I do not want the phone to keep downloading my entire inbox everytime i log on, just the new mails.....Help!
I have tried deleting through "inbox-menu-tools-options-then hold onto account" It says the word delete but when i tap it, the phone just beeps at me.
I want to get the Touch Diamond or the Touch 3G.
What should I consider in choosing between these 2?
How do they compare to each other?
Also, I'm going to get it from T-mobile, so it'll be their MDA version.. any downsides there? I've heard some different stories about the MDA versions being worse than the "normal" HTC versions.
Sorry for all the questions, appreciate the help!
Thanks
Thanks
connecting to the internet. Any advice you can give me would be helpful. Thanks krys.
