The HP iPAQ 614 has been subject to a number of delays over the past few weeks but thanks to our friends at Clove Technology we finally have one to review.

I haven't had much time to use the 614 as yet but my initial thoughts are that this is a well designed and built device which looks attractive and seems to perform well. I have to say, however, that it is a lot bigger than I expected it to be, I thought it would similar to the HTC S730 but in terms of size it's slightly larger than the TyTN II!
We'll be working on the review over the next week or so but until then, here is our unbox video:
HP iPAQ 614 Specification:
EDIT: As per comments below, I'm sorry I didn't power the device up in this video but the 614 arrived only a few hours before I left for Paris and the battery was totally flat when I unboxed. I wanted to get the video live before I left rather than no video at all so I'll record another video when I get back to show you the OS and GUI.
EDIT (again): The review is now LIVE.

May well record another video showing the GUI etc. when I get back.
Sorry for the disapointment but wanted to give you something before I left!

Because I always transfor the large file to the phone by the
card reader.
I have been searching the net for a few weeks now about this phone.
This will be my first attempt to go into the PDA/SmartPhone world, and I must say I am little bit confused.
Right now, I am seriously considering the HP IPAQ 614c.
I am a "keyboard person" so I wouldn't go with a touch only phone (i.e. iPhone, HTC Touch etc).
The 614c specs look awesome, but the only thing that is not clear to me is the issue with the GPS.
How does this work on the 614c? Does it need some kind of third-party software to give you point-to-point directions, like a GPS navigation device? Does it have a GPS receiver built-in? Like the SIRFStar III ?
Could someone please explain the difference between the GPS and the A-GPS in regard to this specific phone?
In other words, can this phone work as a GPS navigation device out-of-the-box, without relying on being connected on a WiFi network?
Let's say you travel to a country in Europe, you don't have access to WiFi; how GPS will function on 614c?
I would appreciate any help, especially from people who already have this phone.
Thank you so much.
Christos R.
A-GPS will work as a GPS navigation device "almost" out of the box. Almost as you will need to buy something like TomTom or the forthcoming HP badged nav software.
It will work without being connected to a wifi network.
The assisted part means every 48 hours or so it will download a file (if you let it) that assists the GPS by downloading the co-ordinates of the satellites.
I hope to get my 614 Monday and will be putting both TomTom and the HP software onto it.
regards,
Greg
What do you know about HP branded navigation ? Do you know who's software it will be ?
TIA
Terry
Does it use the internal or external speaker?
Does it integrate to contacts etc.
And some of smart peoples will make it work with VGA=)
I will be waiting for further comments and first-hand experience from you and other users before I make my move on the 614c.
Also, since I live in Cyprus, could you recommend any reliable (european) websites that can ship across Europe and have competitive prices as well as good support?
Thanks
Christos in CY
Try http://www.expansys.com.cy/ for delivery to Cyprus. I have just ordered my 614c from them in the UK using the MoDaCo voucher which may also work for you in Cyprus on that specific Cyprus expansys site.
Hope this helps, I'll let you know how I find the device when I've had a chance to play with it over the weekend.
Thanks,
Darren
I have a question
does it support video phone call?
I expect you will include about that at your next review
see ya
The device has got 3G technology but since it doesn't have a VGA camera in front of its panel, you can't make any video call. On the other hand, you can receive video calls from other users as well if their devices are supporting 3G. I hope this would be help to you.
