Canon announce EOS 450D |
|
In a press release this morning Canon announced the launch of their latest digital SLR camera, the 12 megapixel EOS 450D.
The 450D includes many new features borrowed from its bigger brothers; twelve megapixel CMOS sensor, 3.0" LCD monitor, Live View, 14-bit processing and RAW, spot metering, improved AF, 3.5 fps continuous shooting, a larger viewfinder, SD/SDHC storage and a new higher capacity battery.

The Press Release:
Canon today launches its latest D-SLR, the EOS 450D. Featuring a 12.2 Megapixel CMOS sensor, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, 3.0” LCD with Live View mode and a new 9-point AF system, the model presents consumers with an unprecedented level of image quality and versatility at this end of the market.
The EOS 450D employs features already proven in Canon’s professional EOS-1 series cameras, including the DIGIC III image processor and a redesigned menu system that enables features such as direct control of Speedlite flash units from the camera LCD. A choice of 13 custom functions allows the photographer to customise the camera to their shooting style.
“The EOS 450D bears the fruits of more than 20 years of ongoing investment into EOS,” said Mogens Jensen, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “This camera continues Canon’s policy of taking technologies proven in the professional arena and putting them within reach of a wider market of amateur photographers.”
The EOS 450D features:
With all key components developed and manufactured in-house, EOS offers photographers a unique quality advantage. The EOS 450D’s specially designed 12.2 Megapixel sensor employs Canon’s high-sensitivity, low-noise CMOS technology to produce richly detailed images with minimal grain. The DIGIC III processor ensures superior image rendering and rapid response times, with an almost instant 0.1 start up. Image data is processed at 14 bits for Delivering a burst rate of 3.5 frames per second, the DIGIC III processor works with the image buffer to handle up to 53 JPEGs (6 in RAW) without interruption.
Built for better photos
The EOS 450D is designed to make photography a fluid experience for photographers of all levels and experience. Housed in a compact body that weighs less than 475 grams, the camera features an improved grip design that provides a natural, ergonomic fit with the user’s hands. A large, bright viewfinder makes image composition clearer and more comfortable. The menu system inherited from professional EOS cameras uses a simplified tab structure that does away with scrolling. It includes a user-defined My Menu tab for instant access to frequently used settings.
Several custom functions are available to optimise the quality of photos captured in a range of situations. Highlight Tone Priority boosts the dynamic range at the highlight end, providing better tonal detail from wedding dresses, cloudy skies and other bright objects. The new Auto Lighting Optimiser corrects brightness and contrast during image processing, while improving skin tones in portraits by ensuring correct exposure for faces. Photographers can also enable additional noise reduction for shots captured at high ISO speeds.
Live View
Available for the first time on a Canon consumer D-SLR, Live View mode makes it easier to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or when shooting from a tripod. The image from the Live View mode is displayed as a smooth, 30fps video feed on the 3.0” LCD, which is 50% brighter than the screen of the EOS 400D. A grid line display and live histogram can be selected to help with shot composition and exposure. While focusing, the photographer can zoom in on specific details with up to 10x magnification of the image displayed on the LCD screen. Two types of auto focus are available: Quick AF flips the camera mirror momentarily to engage the AF sensor; Live AF uses the image contrast data to focus - a method familiar to anyone upgrading from a compact digital camera.
For studio environments, remote Live View lets the photographer compose, adjust settings and capture the shot from a PC using the supplied EOS utility software.
Other improvements
The EOS 450D complements its headline features with a host of smaller improvements that enhance the photographic experience. The viewfinder now displays all key exposure information including ISO speed. The addition of spot metering (4% of viewfinder) allows for greater control over exposure in tricky lighting conditions. PictBridge functionality has been expanded so that photographers can correct horizons and add picture effects before printing. A new high capacity battery extends shooting time on a single charge to a maximum of 500 shots.

Let's see what reviews say when it actually goes on sale though!
Matt
It doesn't suddenly make my cam a lesser camera - and I'm sticking to that ;)
Matt
I wont be getting one.....ever.
Manufacturers won't and can't stand still just so they don't upset the my dads bigger than your dad people.
The 450D is aimed at owners of the 350D who rightly would not upgrade to the slightly improved 400D. I don't think it is worth upgrading until at least a 50% increase in performance which is based on higher resolution, better noise reduction etc, even at this 50% increase an A4 print will probably only be 10% better than the previous model camera. For owners of the 400D don't get upset until the next model comes out. For owners of the 40D don't worry as your camera is a far more rugged player and the lack of a couple of million pixels won't make much difference. I think owners of the 30D would have to decide between build quality of the 30D and better images of the 450D, do you need that ruggedness?
Now Canon say there are more pixels (though same sensor size) than the 400D, and that the picture quality has not dropped compared.
If it compared to the 350D, I would say that it is probably worth buying if you NEED a new camera, but if yours is still working, I would stay with what you got right now until Canon 'has the penny drop' that Nikon has VERY MUCH LESS noise in it's new 12 megapixel D3 than any other camera at all, as far as I have seen the results on-line.
It also has 900,000 pixels in it's 3inch in-line screen, and I think it's a 300,000 shot kevlar shutter, so unless Canon can get it's act sorted, I won't be buying another Canon AT ALL, but saving up for the D3.
I'd rather be able to use 6400 iso and get wonderful amazingly low noise results, MUCH better than the 450d or the 40D, or the 30D, and fine for even a full centre-fold two page magazine spread, with 3D colour sensitive continual focus, even if it does cost over 4000 with lens.
If you haven't seen this, do a search on the net. Some Sports guy was hired by Nikon to do test shots, and his are on the net. The camera goes up to I think 9400 iso in an emergency. I wish Canon and Nikon would get their heads together, and work on what each is best at, and use the new Kodak pixel array to get the 2 stop advantage that it gives, so that the best of both worlds would happen. They could use the new oled screens, with a brightness range of one Million to one, which are made of polymer and so use very little power to produce very bright screens. Kodak have already used one in a cheap camera, so why not Canon or Nikon?
The best Canon can do is the dim things we now get on the 400D or 450D, which is only one and a half times brighter than the 400D. My old Olympus C8080w was brighter than the 400D is now. I wish I could talk to the twits at the top!....
I will go away now, and calm down, and look at some good old pix I took a calm summer's day about 2 years ago on my old fashioned 350D - blistering bright light on lovely rich blue seaside sky and sea, white buildings clustered down the sides of a perfect little harbour, palm trees and vivid colourful flowers and ferns. Ah, Cleveland, Cleveland, how lovely it is (Northeast England if anyone wonders)."

Nikon D300 or whether a EOS 5D, now that it is a similar price to the Nikon
is the best buy of all given that it has a full frame sensor.
i use to own the 350d which i have now given to my dad which he is very pleased with and i have also win competetions with the photos i have taken . so if you want a camera with everything in my case its great for holiday not heavy to walk around with and the live view is great big step forward in my case. i am happy yes the 40d was voted brilliant camera but now looking old to me alittle like me lol joke
would u guys recommend 450D then?
Without doubt and the best price by far around is with the 7dayshop. I am a semi retired pro who started with the 300D which I have been well pleased with. But now I have my pre order with 7dayshop for the 450D and I cant wait to get it. I paid close on £1000 for my 300D a few years ago and now for almost half that price I get double the resolution with the 450D. What a bargain.
Go for it.
Cheers
Harry
I will take a look now!!!!
many thanks
Regards
Suzanne
I have just ordered my eos 450 from 7dayshop.com, I am a complete beginner (hope I have made the right choice) I can`t wait to get it and start learning.
Albert.
Anyone else got one on order with them?
hope you get yours soon, probably 7dayshop only got a limited supply from canon.
MINE IN THE NEXT 16 DAYS I WILL HAVE TO CANCEL MY ORDER AND GO ELSEWHERE. REGARDS RON
Sorry you have not received your camera yet, as i said earlier perhaps 7DAYSHOP only had limited supplies of it, if you are getting worried try this site..... FIRSTCALL PHOTOGRAPHIC..... WHO ARE A UK COMPANY they are selling the 450D for £479.99 body only, might be worth contacting them and see if its in stock Ron.
Cheers Albert.
GOING TO BUY IT. REGARDS RON. TS (I WILL LET YOU KNOW HOW I GET ON )
Still waiting, sent 7dayshop another message asking for any news, got a more polite reply this time saying, "sincere apologies for the delay", and saying that "they have contacted Canon with regards the delivery and Canon cannot give them a delivery date". Sounds very fishy to me. I have now sent a new message saying I don't wish to cancel my order just yet but unless I can be given an expected delivery date soon I will be forced to cancel and take my business elsewhere. Bristol Cameras have the EOS 450D with IS lens Kit in stock at only £20 more than 7dayshop. Good luck everyone still waiting. (PS I found on another camera shop site that they were expecting new deliveries at the end of the first week in May)
Albert.
Good news, just had an e-mail saying 7dayshop have stock and mine is on it's way.
REGARDS RON
Albert.

I received the Canon BG-E5 battery grip for the EOS 450D from 7DAYSHOP today, seemingly they have plenty stock of the item, if you are interested, they are selling it around £50 cheaper than elsewhere, an absolute bargain, grab one while u can folks.
make sure that your lens is the IS version. I think Argos are selling the non - IS version as a kit lens !
Yvonne
My new 450D just arrived from 7dayshop.com last week and it's a huge improvement on both the 350D and the 400D - the results are really impressive!
Albert.
There is a difference between 2GB SD and 4GB upwards. These SDHC cards are not compatible with many devices but furtunately the 450D is. You may need a special card reader for SDHC (High Capacity) cards.
I bought 2x 4GB cards from Picstop.com and the Sandisk one's come supplied with a MicroMate reader for just this reason.
There is more information on their blog at :

What a piece of kit though. I am dead chuffed with mine.
I did a lot of suring to get the best price and so decided to put all the retailers together in a website so everyone could benefit from my hard work.
