HTC TyTN II first retail unbox! |
|
We strive to bring you the most up to date information about devices and have managed to get our hands on a retail boxed version of the new HTC TyTN II. This could very well be the first unboxing video of the final retail unit!

Overall the final version looks and feels a lot more sturdy and refined than some of the early demo units we've seen and I'm pleased to say that TomTom 6 is included, although this is a 'Taster' version whereby you can only download one city map for free. Naturally we'll have more on the TyTN II as we use it.
Enjoy the video!
Note that in the video I mention the memory card as being miniSD. It is in fact microSD, sorry for the goof!
EDIT: You can see our TyTN II review HERE.

When you do the review can you check the video performance of against the tytn and also the support for stereo bluetooth headsets.
I have a tytn and if both of the above are better then I will def. be getting a tytn II :D
Keep up the good work!!!
we can't get it yet althought it's made right here in Taiwan..
I expect for more details and testing from you. ^^
philip from Taiwan
Can you tell us about user-accessible memory? Is the RAM flash or does it require power to hold its contents?
I will not have been so excited when I get mine as I was when I unboxed my last Psion Series 5 MX. I love the picture on the box sleeve top...I think that the Kaiser might just be the machine Psion needed to have built.
It will be interesting to see how ATT boxes it over here.
Sorry, I'll stop making funny noises soon. Oh MAN, if there was ever a classic case of lust after inanimate hardware, my desire for this handset is IT.
My Vario 2's currently looking at me with some disgust and a little jealousy, because it knows soon it will be usurped in the role of my mobile technology companion. Although thinking about it, I'd rather go without the T-Mobile branded version if I can't afford the HTC version (because shiny and black beats the horribly-styled T-Mobile version any day). Unfortunately, I can't afford £450, neither can I afford to not have the V3 in some shape or form, so here's hoping Expansys starts retailing aftermarket case swapping kits! :D
Thanks VERY much for the unboxing video :D
@Tariq Bamadhaj - No stablility issues with the device so far - not had to reset or anything.
@dickr - The RAM is flash so done are the days where you lose everything when you run the battery down!
@Andrew - Thanks for pointing that out, I must have goofed there! The memory slot is definitely microSD

Looks really nice, but will it cut the mustard???
spoke to Orange on Friday and they finally admitted the existence of the Tytn II and said it was on their coming soon list (although still not on their website) However, the c/s person - very helpful - suggested that it would be available in around a fortnight.
(Unless of course anyone has a further update???)
Thanks for the video, do you know anything about what the UK phone networks are doing? I seem to get different answers every time I call and was hoping you might have a bit more info!
Matt
Many thanks

Handset Cost: FREE :-)
Cant wait for it to arrive,
Google maps is slow without HSDPA. First WM device - migrated from PalmOS. I have to say WM6 is just too complicated, and I'm annoyed to find that with WM apps, you appear to have to have a version that is compatible with your device CPU. In the case of the Tytn, there is lots of cool stuff that doesn't seem to be supported. Nice toys, but without the software, how much use are they? Can't browse my mobile network via wi-fi, not that many apps, and no satnav... Also, the screen is too small for web browsing IMO.
Cool hardware, and not much bigger than an N95, but it's not good enough to replace my Palm TX yet...
Its looks like an amazing phone! Can you play videos on it
like through Windows Media Player? Thanks
I can confirm that Vodafone can supply this handset. Just threatend to leave them and go to O2 because they couldn't supply what I wanted. The nice chap in the cancellation department informed me that not all the phones are listed on the website?! If you dont ask you dont get.... and i'm getting one on monday, £25.00 per month, 125mins anytime/stop the clock and 1000 texts plus a month free browsing. I've been with them 15years so they are trying thier hardest to keep me, phone was free :-)
Will post back when i've got it and let you know what it's like.
I just got mine today (Orange gave it to me free, with 1300 minutes any time/any network, 300 txts, and inclusive care for £45 per month).
Having a play through the phone, I'm REALLY liking it over my old TyTN. However, I keep seeing people talk about the inbuilt GPS yet I can't seem to get it to work. I've read your review along with others and they all seem to mention a 'taster' version of TomTom yet the only software that came with it was one cd with Blackberry software and another with the Outlook trial.
I've installed another copy of Tomtom I have for another pda and it installed fine and the map worked a treat, however it would not acquire a satellite. I went through the different receivers (tomtom/bluetooth etc) and not one aquired a signal.
Am I missing something or am I'm just dumb? The manual that came with the phone only mentions how to update the quickgps, nothing else is mentioned about the GPS.
Oh well, off to have another play but it is a nice phone! I don't want to get finger prints on it!
keep up the good work
Anyway...having the same problem getting TOMTOM 6 to work?
I wonder if Orange messed with the ROM to the point it won't work and that's why it's not bundled as a taster?
It worked perfectly on my M3100...
Any ideas anyone?
Have tried adjusting the NMEA vs Bluetooth GPS.. board rate etc. TOMTOM appears to see the GPS but no satellites?
Re HTC TyTN II
I have had this phone for a while now, and whilst I find it a super phone/pda, it is has one major let down - the video performance very poor. This unit is equipped MSM7200 chipset from Qualcomm and as such should be super fast, however, HTC have omitted to package drivers to take advantage of the hardware acceleration within the Chipset.
As at 16/01/2008 HTC have not yet come up with any solution to this problem.
In an effort to get HTC to do something about this, a worldwide publicity drive is under way, for a start, look at:- http://www.htcclassaction.org/
Help support this drive to provide a better performing smartphone for all. ( This COULD be one of the best Smartphones on the market today! )
PS. To get the on board GPS working, for the first time, run "GPS Test", it can take up to 5 minutes to detect the satellites on the first occasion, once set up it will find satellite in about 30 seconds.
Select NMEA in TomTom, Comm 4 / 9600 baud.
Do NOT configure External GPS device!!
I've seen comments on installing the TouchFlo cube on the TyTN II. If so, how is this done?
I'm seriously getting this device, but would like the full TouchFlo experience. I could go with the Touch Cruise, but it doesn't have a hardware keyboard, and I can't wait for the Feb release date.
TIA!
I love mine and it's by far the best phone or pda I've ever owned.
Nice review too. Thank you.
On a different point I had the same watch but after six months or so noticed the finish around the bezel was begining to rub away leaving a yellowed layer underneath but apart from that it was a great watch.
found your site via a search on google. i have the T-mobile Vario version of the TYTN2. however a mate of mine has it on Voda and i am desperate to get my hands on the extra software he has especially the business card scanner!
Can anybody help?
Craig
