Orange Samsung i600 problems? |
|
A while ago we unboxed the Samsung SGH-i600 and published this video of the device. Since then the i600 has been released on the Orange network and a number of our regular visitors have been asking if there is any difference between the straight Samsung and the Orange branded version of the i600.
Both devices have exactly the same hardware but there are some software differences as, once again, Orange removed MSN messenger from their version and branded the homescreen and icons. However there seems to be a more worrying problem with the Orange version. As you'll see in the video below, there are some stablility issues. One of the first things I tried on the i600 is to change the ringtone but simply doing this is enough to crash the device and all one can do is remove the battery as it wont even respond to the power button.
Now I'm not sure if this is a general problem or if I have just been unlucky with the device I have but I shall be asking Orange to exchange this one!
Other than the above there really isn't any difference between the two versions but you do get an extended as well as a standard battery with the one from Orange.
You can download a higher-res version of the video HERE.

- T-Mobile: Web 'n Walk 35 plus (12 months) for £47.50pm plus £300 odd for a sim-free handset (plus an unwanted handset); or
- Orange: Orange Solo 800 (18 months) for £23.50pm for 9 months and £47pm for 9 months and the handset for free (on 3g.co.uk).
Clearly, the latter is a cheaper (even if I sell the spare T-mobile handset). However, some questions:
1. What functionality (other than the MSN Messenger) has been removed from the Orange version? In particular, has the ability to be a modem survived unscathed?
2. Aside from the generally irritating orange-ness of the interface and the lack of the roller-deck, are the any other drawbacks with the Orange conversion? In particular, can you chose the default page for the internet, or do Orange direct to the joys of Orange world?
3. How easy if it to:
(i) reflash or
(ii) hack
the handset, so that it looks normal once again?
4. Any update on Orange's HSDPA coverage. They stated that they were intending to roll out to London and 5 other cities in 2007. Has London already been done?
5. Any update of stability or vanilla Samsung vs Orange? If there is instability with Orange, how can it be fixed?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Paul
6. The Orange version includes the extended battery. How easy is it to buy this separately/how much does it cost?
7. Samsung apparently have said that they will provide a WM6 update for the i600. Any news on whether this will apply to the Orange version (clearly Orange, not Samsung will have to decide this)?
Thanks again,
Paul
2) I have used the vanilla version and the Samsung version side-by-side for a while and there isnt a lot of difference but the Orange device is a little slower and less stable in general. I suspect this is to do with the Orange implementation of the ROM.
3) I suspect that the handset is pretty standard in this respect. I've not tried hacking or reflashing yet but suspect that I might be looking at this soon with WM6.
4) I can only tell you that most of London seems to have HSDPA coverage and it's pretty darn good!
5) Orange version defo. less stable.
6) I think that the Vanilla version now includes an extended battery, if not there are a few suppliers. I think eXpansys stock them.
7) Orange are generally quite (actually very) slow to release ROM updates, even to resolve critical problems so I wouldn't hold your breath for an Orange release of the WM6 rom!

Thank you very much for your reply. Very helpful. In the end I went for the sim-free/T-mobile option (N95 shortly to be appearing on ebay). You are right that the Expansys sim-free comes with the extended battery (whereas a vanilla one I was offered on Tottenham Court Road only had two standard batteries - maybe older stock?).
I am happy with the Samsung. It is a lovely phone.
Thanks once again,
Paul
When I try to change the settings to make a video call the phone asks me for a code ??? What code is this?? The phone is new and I have not added any barring codes at all.
Thanks for the help
Bubba
No idea, that's the first time I've heard of such a thing. I think you'll have to have a word with Orange on that!
Matt
The only issue I have is when I use the alarm the snooze fuction does not work (i.e. you can press the snooze but it dosent ring the alarm again) if the phone has been sitting idle for more than 30 minutes.
If you test the alarm and snooze function within the 30 minute period it will snooze and repeat indefinately.
Anyone else experienced this issue?
Graham
Apart from this it sounds like the handset for me.
Also what is the Vanilla handset ?
Thanks
Tim.
As far as I know, Orange are the only UK operator to be offering this phone at the moment. Don't let the above comments put you off, it's a great phone and not everyone seems to suffer from the problems mentioned.
Vanilla refers to a handset direct from the manufacturer rather than from a Network. In this case a Vanilla Handset is an i600 that's direct from Samsung. It's not network locked and nor is there any operator customisation installed.

I have also emailed Samsung and they came back to me with this
"We are currently unaware with any problems of this nature with the
orange firmware and it is not a problem with the network free versions
of the handset. The orange version of the handset hasonly been out for
two weeks however, there will most likely be updatesfor this problem in
the future, but not as of yet"
Well theres a suprise !
I think i will just take the plunge and see what happens and let you know Matt.

Good news - I have the option "Join network on i600" in my Bluetooth preferences on my MacBook. Bad news - it is greyed out and I can not access it.
I suspect this is an Orange limitation, but Matt mentions that internet sharing works on his Orange i600? Is anyone else successfully using an Orange i600 as a Bluetooth Modem? Thanks
PS So far, I am preferring this phone over a treo 650 & SE M600i.
When I lose the connection the i600 network is greyed out and the ony solution seems to be a restart of the MacBook. But I will only use the i600 as a modem rarely so I can live with that.
Has anybody managed to 'flash' the Orange version and install the Samsung OEM software on it yet?
otherwise great device...
Thanks
However I am disappointed that I can't implement the Samsung card wheel screen saver. I only have two options, list and icons!
Anyone know how to sort this?
Thanks
Matt
text messages at all....
how do i fix this.
thanks.
Phil.
Tried on/off, and a hard reboot (removing battery while on), but nothing works.
Orange firmware is the worst I have ever come across.
I love the futures
Only problem I have is that when I get an sms or Text message and use a song or long tune as the ring tone the phone won’t stop the song and the vibrating even though I have read the whole message. No matter what I do it won’t stop until it has played the whole song.
Is this just the way it is or is there a setting I missed somewhere?
Otherwise brilliant phone
Ive recently upgraded from an SPV m3100 to samsung i600
and found that the i600 has no MS Word or Excel which
means I cannot transfer any of my previous documents from
my old phone to my new phone - any ideas? NB.The samsung
has Piscel which allows you to view the document but not
edit
Thanks for your help

I've just got me i600 and I love it to bits, I've just got one small question, douse anyone know how you can tell what data connection you are using when using the internet? I have wifi in my house, so I obviously don't want to be using GPRS or HSDPA. The wifi symbol is there, but then so are the other symbols.
Any help would be great!
Thanks, Tristan
I had similar stability probs on my i600, so I reflashed it with a unbranded firmware pack.
Works like a dream now.

When are samsung upgrading it?
I have the device code. From where i can get the ACCESS CODE ?
My device has another problem, I go to bed with the phone switched on, wake up the next morning to a phone with the display off and it won't react to anything, not even the power key... I have to remove the battery to get it going again, nothing's happened, it just crashes mysteriously through the night.
I have the device code. From where i can get the ACCESS CODE ?
