A new HTC device, the Census, has just appeared on the FCC site.

HTC Census

The unusual thing about this device is that it lacks voice capability and is a data only handset. Naturally not a great deal is known about the Census at this stage but you'll notice from the image above that a fingerprint reader is included. With the lack of keyboard or keypad it obviously includes a touch screen.

HTC Census Specification:

  • 416Mhz Intel Bulverde
  • 128Mb ROM, 64Mb RAM
  • Windows Mobile 5.0 for Pocket PC Phone Edition AKU 3.5
  • 3.5" QVGA (240 x 320) TFT display
  • GSM9850, GSM1900
  • ED-VO, GPRS
  • Built in GPS
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • WiFi: 802.11b, 802.11g
  • 1.9MP Camera
  • 3000 mAh battery
  • SD Card slot
  • RJ11 Connector for phone(?)
  • 153 x 79 x 29mm
  • 350 grams
  • Don't let the images above deceive you in to thinking that this is a small smartphone device - the screen alone is 3.5" which puts the HTC Census in the same league as the older (circa HTC Blue Angel) handsets. Also look at the weight - 350g!?

No idea when (or IF) the device will see release but another thing you'll notice, if you take the time to look at the manually on the FCC site, is that the screen shots all show Windows Mobile 5!

Remember that contract that HTC got to do the next USA Census. Apparantly, it was to be a data only handset so that it could upload reports back to whoever.

They said that the census hanset was going to be a HTC Hermes minus the voice capabilities.
