Best Buy goes green

BestBuy

With Best Buy opening its first store at Thurrock on Monday they are also launching the green tech selection.

New and exclusive green technology area in Best Buy stores will showcase energy saving products as well as electric cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles

Best Buy is re-defining consumer electronics retailing in the UK by today revealing its new area in-store dedicated to energy saving and green, energy efficient technology. This “GreenTech” area will showcase everything from energy management products to solar chargers and even electric vehicles – a first for any UK consumer electronics retailer.

For the first time, consumers will be able to find electric cars, motorcycles, scooters and bicycles (as well as the helmets, lights and a comprehensive accessory range to go with them) all under one roof.  Hand in hand with this exciting green and energy smart technology, Best Buy Blueshirts will provide expert and impartial advice on how to save energy and money both in the home and on the go. Best Buy is the only electronics retailer bringing together all this amazing new technology to help customers be more energy efficient and help the world one gadget at a time. Customers will be able to see and test out the latest in green technology at Best Buy’s first UK store which is set to open its doors to these and all its other great products in Thurrock, Essex on 30 April 2010.

Leading the charge in electric transportation, Best Buy will have exclusive as well as other popular vehicles on sale. In store will be one of the largest selections of top-of-the-range electric bicycles like the Gocycle, the cool urban performance commuter tool, and brands like Ultramotor with its Urban, Hybrid and Metro bikes and Moore & Large’s Izip range.  Prices start at £399.99 and Best Buy’s Geek Squad – the 24 hour technology support and advice service – will be on hand to provide set up assembly free in-store to ride straight away, or arrange delivery of any brand new electric bicycle fully set up for as little as £49.99[1].

Only available at Best Buy in the UK, the Brammo Enertia electric motorcycle – a blend of old school purist motorcycling elements and new school technology to make the future of motorcycles – will be on-show in all Best Buy stores and available to buy from August[2]. Sticking to two wheels, the “GreenTech” area will be home to top electric scooters from Xero Tech; the Urban Citi, Urban Tourer and the Classic, with prices starting at £1,499.99.

From two wheels to four, on show at Best Buy’s first store in Thurrock will be the awesomely quick £86,950 Tesla Roadster with a 244 mile range – officially the fastest electric vehicle in production with a storming 0-60mph time of only 3.7 seconds! For the urban family, the Citroën C1 ev’ie four-seater city car – made by British-based Electric Car Corporation (ECC) with a top speed of 60mph and around 75 mile range – will be available in all Best Buy stores for customers to test drive and order.

Being exempt from congestion charges, road tax and even the cars being as cheap as 1pence-per-mile to run, electric vehicles are a real and economical alternative way to travel. As with all its products, Best Buy will continuously review the latest and greatest electric vehicles on the market and update its offerings with products on sale available to test before you buy.

The choice of products doesn’t just include the vehicles though. The “GreenTech” zone is a place where customers can learn how to get the most out of their technology efficiently and functionally and a showcase of the latest and greatest energy efficient products on the market.

Specially trained Blueshirts will be able to offer expert advice to help customers begin to live more energy-efficient lives. Electricity monitors from Owl and Wattson, solar chargers for mobile phones and laptops from Power Traveller, energy saving plugs and adaptors as well as a selection of some of the best green products from across the store are just a few other examples of the technology on offer in Best Buy’s stores.  With these products, customers will be able to make their house a home of tomorrow and will have the freedom to try the products in-store to see how they work and how they can help to save money and energy.

Paul Antoniadis, CEO of Best Buy Branded Operations said: “We want our customers to know that Best Buy is different and this innovative and inspiring range is just one example. Never before has a consumer electronics retailer in the UK had an entire area devoted to green technology nor had such a comprehensive choice of electric vehicles. Our customers can pop in to browse for a movie and could end up riding home on a super-cool bicycle or something else!  As with all our products we want our customers to try before they buy and we’ll have test drives available on a wide selection of our vehicles – licence dependent of course!  And all of our car parks will have electric charging points so customers can power-up for free while they browse.

“Whether it’s the latest and greatest in entertainment, making your technology that bit more efficient and so helping you to save money and energy, making your commute a bit more exciting and economical or replacing your fridge-freezer, Best Buy really does have everything under one roof in consumer technology.”

Best Buy will open its first store in Thurrock, Essex on 30 April 2010, followed by stores in Hedge End (Southampton) and Merry Hill (West Midlands) that will both open in June and then followed by Aintree near Liverpool in the following weeks.  Best Buy has also confirmed that it will be opening a store in Croydon, Surrey in Autumn 2010.
