Olixar Qi-Tone Unboxing

vlcsnap-error358Mobilefun have sent  a Olixar Qi-Tone Alarm Clock Bluetooth Qi Charging Speaker with the dark wood finish.

Technical Specifications

  • Dimensions: 250 x 90 x 75 mm
  • Qi: Yes (WPC 1.1)
  • Bluetooth: V2.1 + EDR
  • Input: 5V, 1.5A
  • Power: 5W
  • Speaker Frequency: 60HZ – 20KHZ
  • Speaker Driver: Stereo, 1.5inch, 4Ohm, 3W

Perhaps in the unboxing I come across as not terribly impressed by the Plixir clock, however over the last week of using it I have actually grown somewhat fond of the retro-esq time piece.

This is a device that requires very little attention yet subliminally you are using it a awful lot. I have never had a desire to know the temperature at any time, living in Northern Ireland we are either “baltic” or just warm enough to be a little uncomfortable. There is no inbetween. However, having it there I have begun to observe just when the temperature changes to Baltic from warm. That’s started to take my interest. I see it sitting at 21℃ and take note. I will look again when it is baltic and we see 19℃, 20℃ is indistinguishable from 21℃.

Then again there is the the large, friendly time placement, basic alarm function and uncomplicated, old fashioned interface. This is genuinely refreshing to just set things manually and not have to rely on sporadic bluetooth connections, fiddling with NFC or internet radio. I now realise I am just pointing niceties that clock radios have had for the last 40 years and it’s welcome here. A device not trying to be more than it needs to be.

The addition of Qi wireless charging is the modern age being injected in just the right amount. A practical use of Qi charging combined with the old. The charge rate does not matter and it’s entirely unobtrusive implementation. The same with Bluetooth, it just works and doesn’t try to be clever with it.

Speaker quality is perfectly acceptable for what this is. You are not going to be hosting parties with it, in saying that it might actually surprise you, yet it will easily handle calls and a little background music as you get ready for said party.

Two USBs on the back assist in the charging of peripherals without Qi, a smartwatch and tablet. You won’t have to dig down the back of the night stand for charge cables anymore. I was not able to playback an MP3 off a memory stick however that sort of method is probably long dead. Just to cover other bits and pieces that stream there is a 3.5mm AUX thrown in for the completest.

From afar the clock looks quite elegant however up close the finish does look like the vinyl wrap is stuck on, which it is and takes away from the over all appeal. I will also say that the price does seem a little steep at £100.00 and that is the a major downfall of the Qi-Tone.

If this is your thing then drop over to Mobilefun from more information

One slight problem with the Chromecast Audio

CQFeXYQWgAQggBt-350x200Google launched its colourful new update to the Chromecast yesterday, not one but two different devices. One of the new additions a lot of folks were getting excited about was that music streaming giant Spotify is finally supporting Chromecast. However, after explaining a more about the service today, Spotify say owners users the new Chromecast will be able to ‘cast music directly’ from a phone or tablet right away. The cloud this silver lining is wrapped around is only Spotify Premium subscribers will be able to send content to Chromecast Audio. I’m sure this will only effect a smaller percentage of Spotify users, and perhaps will help Google keep their Play Music as via option of Chromecast users in the future. However there are a fair few out there that will be a little glum about this stipulation.

First-gen Chromecast will need to wait for a firmware update enabling Spotify support first from Google. This is expected in the coming weeks.

EasyAcc Selfie Stick QuickSnap Pro Unboxing

vlcsnap-error118Here is another option for the Selfie craze that still grips our society. The EasyAcc Selfie Stick Quicksnap is a modestly priced monopole with Bluetooth build in. Designed to cater to phones such as the iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, Samsung Galaxy S6 and S5 the 9.7 cm maximum length of the clasp will accommodate most phones. The Quicksnap brags a 270-degree adjustable head to help find a better angle when taking a selfie. Despite it’s 80cm reach when extended the stick is only around 20 cm when folded making it easy to store.

However, as this is Bluetooth the stick requires a charge to continue to operate. The 60 mA battery will probably only take a short time to charge however the charge will only stay for 3 days, so you must think ahead or have a portable charger in the event you need to use it on the fly.

  • Material
    – The smart phone ABS holder is stable and durable. The clip on the holder can fix the phone very well so that you can enjoy your selfie photos.
    – Stainless steel stick can be 7 times extended, which offers you long enough selfie distance and a stable position for various situation of photos.
    – The ABS handle is comfortable to hold.
  • Design
    – The smart phone ABS holder can be folded, when you don’t need to use it.
    – Via Bluetooth the selfie stick can be connected to the camera from smart phone directly, and you don’t need to set up wireless Bluetooth remote.
    – It’s only 20 cm once it’s folded. Considering our travelers, we made it so easy to carry.

Can be purchased from Amazon for £12.59

Spigen Stealth Universal Cradle Unboxing

vlcsnap-error001The name Spigen is fast becoming one of the favorites when it comes to mobile accessories. Ever reliable cases and peripherals that might cost a little more but the quality is easily impressive. There has been a bit of a wait for their Steatlh cradle and now it has arrived I am far from disappointed.

Combining quality with a simple approach is the way to most people hearts. The Stealth is essentially a clam shell that holds you phone in place, in landscape orientation. There are two notches to pitch your phone depending on the height of your dashboard and this is about all of the functionality. When the phone is not in the holder it folds down to be almost out of sight. No rubber suction cups, not long necks or arms pushing the device out from the windscreen and a significantly smaller footprint to see past, even when in use.

The styling of the Stealth is much like that of a Stealth bomber. The rubberised exterior has facets allowing for a more stylish look and appeal. The interior is a little more plain however there is a small groove behind the phone large enough to take a coin… for your trolley perhaps?

The cradle is attached to the dashboard by a large, super sticky pad on the underside. Packaged are two alcohol wipes, one for the first time you attach it to you dashboard, the second for an hour later when you decide to move it a little as it’s in the way.

The only problem I have encountered with the Stealth is the limitation to landscape. Invariably this will mean the buttons on the side of the phone are more likely to be pressed, therefore the phone has to sit at a point whereby the buttons are not being touched by either part of the Cradle clamp mechanism. No buttons on the sides of your phone? This is the one for you. Another small problem is the landscape orientation, this isn’t ideal for some. Quite a few phones on the market lack the ability to rotate their home screen. It really isn’t designed to take a device in portrait mode.

The Spigen Stealth is a great cradle for your car, simple in design and simple to use. You can purchase the Spigen Stealth Universal Cradle from Mobilefun for £24.99

Strike Hands Free car cradle

vlcsnap-error122There are are couple of things that will become obvious about the Strike Alpha Cradle when you consider it for your in car docking solution. Some good, some bad. There is still no perfect solution and there likely never will.

The Strike Alpha Cradle is a well constructed and sturdy phone holder. This is evident as soon as you touch it. If you are dedicated to your phone and want the most serious solution then this is the one to be looking at. The combination of features and design is second to none.

This brings us to the crossroads of how far do you take something. Back in the late 90’s cars were being fitted with holders that latched onto the dashboard and specifically designed for particular phones. If you had a work/business phone then this was the norm. A nokia phone mount was in nearly all fleet cars in the UK. Eventually this was done away with as mobile phones became more popular and everyone had one. Apple and Blackberry become more popular in the business world and the phone cradle had to be more flexible. People changed their phone yearly or even 6 monthly and an expensive install of a phone holder gave way to a suction cup and a cheaper universal holder from Ebay.

Strike cater to all desires. Offering suction mounts, dash mounts, hard wiring solutions, NFC or Bluetooth integration. It is hard to measure the fast charge capabilities of the mount and some might be a little confused between fast charge compatibility and the super fast charging terminology used here. There will even be a wireless charger compatible version available in the future.

Are a mount there are a lot of options and out of the box this performs well. There are a few liberties that work out for the best. The USB connector is a welcome one, whilst it might not suit everyone it suits me as I would be plugging this into an already existing USB cable and there was a little extra cable to play with. The signal booster cable wasn’t terribly useful as I am unable to find a use for it or even a fitment to install in the car to accommodate it.

Strike are treading a line between specific build and universal fitting. It’s a dangerous one but for someone picking up a particular phone, a Samsung Galaxy for example and knowing that they will be keeping it for the 24 months of a contract then this a good choice as it is a well build and a very convenient design. If you are likely to be looking for a new phone after 6 months and are not the type to stay loyal to a manufacturer then there is little to recommend here unless you have money to burn.

Strike Alpha Cradle for Samsung Galaxy Xcover is available RRP GBP is £84.99.

GeForce Car Dashboard Camera Unboxing

vlcsnap-error288A dashcam is a sensible move for most on the road today as there are many terrible drivers out there. Recording how an accident occurred could be vital evidence for an insurance claim. Set it and forget, you plug this in and it will happily record your daily commute over and over until the horrible day you might need to use the footage.
