Google will sort your home WiFi with the Onhub

CaptureRestarting you router is a given these days, with the amount of conflicts an traffic the router is contractually having to deal with it is no wonder it just gives up after a while. It will then take the flack from the owner as they stomp across and hit a button to get things going again. It’s happened to us all and those Router Gremlins are a real pain in the backside. Thankfully it looks like companies that know what they are doing are promising to tackle this head on and produce better results than the currently generation of WiFi access points and routers.

Google is presenting the Onhub, a $200 router that promises the world and we can only cross our fingers and hope it delivers.

Specced out like so:

  • IPQ8064 Dual Core 1.4GHz (same SoC as the R7500 Nighthawk from Netgear)
  • 1GB DDR3L RAM
  • 4GB internal storage, 8MB “NOR flash”
  • one USB3.0 port

  • gigabit WAN port, and only one gigabit LAN port

Stay tuned for an ASUS take on things. Their RT-AC87 model looks to be doing something similar.

Will there be a 5 inch iPhone 6C?

iphone-6s-5-inchA refresh is on the way for the iPhone and as usual there js little in the way of official details. Expected are two variants with 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays. However there are reports of an iPhone 6c being in the works, and more recently a suggested rumour emerged that the 6c will be built by Foxconn with a 4-inch display.

However, a more recent rumours of a 5-inch model being manufactured by Foxconn are making the rounds. According to the Foxconn insider the 5-incher will apparently rock an 8 MP camera, a dual-LED flash and powered by an A9 processor. A sketch depicting the alleged 5-inch iPhone 6s model has popped up from the Foxconn insider who was not able to provide a photo of the device due to Apples security measures.

Could Apple be planning four devices?

Might the UK have an Electric Highway?

55d2850e04d0aElectric Motorways that allow electric cars to charge whilst on the move are to be tested in the UK this year. The 18-month scheme, announced by Highways England, will “test how the technology would work safely and effectively on the country’s motorways and major A roads. The concept of wirelessly charging technology under the road is used to power buses in Korea. However, these tests in Britain are said to be the first of their kind. 

The potential to recharge low emission vehicles on the move offers exciting possibilities. The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology, which will help boost jobs and growth in the sector. As this study shows, we continue to explore options on how to improve journeys and make low-emission vehicles accessible to families and businesses.

If successful, the new roads will mean that electric cars could be driven for long distances without the need to stop and charge their batteries. Although, it’ll require Highways England to install plug-in charging points every 20 miles on the motorway network, something which they’ve committed to doing. The days of autonomous electric cars could be here sooner rather than later.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow

CaptureDroidlife have successfully captured, what is now know as, Android 6.0 Marshmallow’s boot screen in the Youtube video below. A lovely animated intro sequence is either an impressive fake or a lucky early leak. The animation does manage to capture Google’s colourful and smooth nature and helps this writer lean toward the authentic option.

The name Android 6.0 Marshmallow was revealed yesterday outside Google HQ and Tweeted by @davey_burke after a few days of teasing.

We have around two months to go before the new hardware and software are launched so check back for most up to date information.

I wold imagine the listing will probably disappear quite quickly so I have persevered the images from the listing in this post, you know, for science. Case manufacturers get the dimensions from Google a little early so they can design and manufacture their cases and be ready for the phone launch. This is how we knew the dimensions and the position of each component a few weeks ago.

Rumoured specs of the Surface Phone

surface-wp2-11-e1438158350548It seems that the oft rumoured Microsoft Surface Phone is known by the codename of project Project Juggernaut Alpha, which matches the previous leaks we heard a couple of years ago. If true we’re seeing a device that one day might be capable of  running Win32 apps, especially as the spec sheet described a rather powerful device housing a beautiful a 5.5-inch AMOLED display of 1440×2560 16:9 resolution and protected by Gorilla Glass 4. When it comes to its internals:

Some EE Power bars recalled

power-bar_recall_16.9-1280x720Recently EE very kindy handed out free Power Bar chargers to their customers. EE has unfortunately identified a very small number of incidents where Power Bars have overheated, all of which relate to batch E1-06 (written as Model:E1-06 on the side of the device), and could pose a fire safety risk. They are therefore recalling batch E1-06 and request that customers stop using them and return their device to a local EE store at their earliest convenience. Power Bars from any other batch aren’t affected by this recall. EE intend to replace these chargers once we’ve completed our investigations.

EE has identified a very small number of incidents where Power Bars have overheated, all of which relate to batch E1-06 (written as Model:E1-06 on the side of the device), and could pose a fire safety risk.

We’re therefore recalling batch E1-06 and request that customers stop using them and return their device to a local EE store at their earliest convenience.

Power Bars from any other batch aren’t affected by this recall.

It’s our intention to replace these chargers once we’ve completed our investigations; we’ll be in touch once these have been concluded. We’re really sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
What’s the issue with batch E1-06, and how do I identify my device?

We’ve identified a very small number of incidents where Power Bars have overheated, all of which relate to batch E1-06, and could pose a fire safety risk. EE Power Bars can be identified by a code found on the side of the device. For the recalled models this code will read ‘E1-06′ (see image below).

What should I do?

We’re requesting that customers stop using Power Bars from batch E1-06, and unplug them from handsets and the mains. They should return the Power Bar to a local EE store at their earliest convenience.

How do I get a replacement?

Customers returning batch E1-06 will be issued with a replacement once our investigations are concluded. The swap program has been temporarily suspended while we complete this recall process and restock.

How do I know the other batches are safe?

We’ve not seen any issues of overheating with other batches and they meet all safety standards. Here is some general advice on use of portable chargers.

The Next Nexus in pictures

34X2EwFThe internet is rife with rumours about what is happening with the next Nexus incarnation. The most solid news is that there will be two Google-branded smartphones which will be made by LG and Huawei. These should be here in October or early November will ship with a new version of Android. @evleaks aka Evan Blass, one of the most reliable tipsters and all round good sod stated “Huawei Nexus sounds impressive so far: 5.7″ QHD w/ metal body, SD820 SoC, fingerprint reader. Ships Q4.” Similarly @onleaks touched on LG’s offering having a metal body, measuring approximately 147x73x8-9.8mm with a 5.2in screen, Front Facing Speakers,Fingerprint Sensor on the Back and USB Type-C.

An image slipped out this morning of the back of a phone carrying the Nexus branding. With the circular ring of Motorola and an interesting Nokia Lumia style camera housing. In addition this looks to be a plastic back with a dual LED flash. Some friendly folks on Reddit decided to do a little photo-shopping to clean up the image for a more handsome viewing experience below.

Olixar Pocketsize Selfie Stick with mirror Unboxing

Recently we have seen manufacturers increase the optics on the front facing camera to help create more tolerable pictures. Olixar have taken a very simple step to reverse the camera utilising an age old trick of a simple convex mirror mounted to the selfie stick. If you have been using mobile phones for a few years you might remember back in the day a phone had a small silver nubbin that would help the user take a self portrait instead of using the rubbishy VGA camera on the front, if you were lucky enough to have one. 

Taking this a step further is the true genius behind the Olixar Pocketsize Selfie Stick, as a small mirror about the same size as a larger postage stamp, gives the user a better illustration of what is happening as the screen would normally do if you were using a traditional selfie stick. The mirror is a piece of reflective plastic that, whilst being being subject to fingerprints, manages the job very well. Running the line of being a little on the small side once fully extended, the mirror is actually just right as any larger would increase the overall size of the stick and therefore the footprint required to store it.

The quality of this stick is not as high as that of the Olixar Selfie Smart Pole or the Olixar Ninja Katana Selfie Stick however the price is notably cheaper and thus the quality cannot remain. As illustrated in the video above, there is a notable bend in when the stick is fully extended and a phone is in place. This isn’t a deal breaker by any stretch, merely a consideration as the other sticks we have look at recently will endure much more day to day abuse than this, the little brother. In saying that, this is when the stick is fully extended, when in compact mode and being tossed around in a bag the Pocketsize will take a licking. Everything fits away and it becomes a sturdy lump.

This is yet another handy stick to have and maybe more of a consideration for those on the fence of selfie sticks.
