Samsung Galaxy S III delays

Galaxy S III

Set to be one of the best selling smartphones yet, the Samsung Galaxy S III is not off to a great start. Numerous sources are reporting that the pebble blue variant of the device which officially goes on sale tomorrow is now delayed along with the white 32GB version.

Clove have stated that they are expecting stock of the pebble blue GSIII to arrive on June 5th although at present this date is still to be confirmed. They are also reporting a one day delay with the white 16GB version so if you did pre order it looks like you may not receive it until June 1st.

The reason for the delay is not clear but I would imagine there are a lot of very unhappy Android fans out there today.

LG sell three million LTE smartphones

LG_Optimus_LTE_500

Here in the UK we are still waiting for some LTE goodness, however in other parts of the world LG seem to be doing rather well in terms of LTE supported devices. The South Korean company has announced they have topped the three million mark in terms of sales which puts them up there with the other big players.

LG’s offering of LTE smartphones to date include:

  • Revolution by LG — LG’s first LTE model released in May 2011.
  • LG Optimus LTE — The world’s first HD LTE smartphone was launched in October 2011 and exceeded sales of one million units within the first 100 days, making it the most popular LTE-capable phone in a highly competitive market at the start of the year.
  • LG Optimus Vu: — Launched in Korea in February 2012, the Optimus Vu: with its 5-inch IPS display and 4:3 aspect ratio offers a unique viewing experience. At 8.5mm, the Optimus Vu: is the slimmest LTE phone currently on the market.
  • LG Optimus LTE Tag — This smartphone offers Tag+, a unique feature which uses Near Field Communication (NFC) to interact with special stickers that change the phone’s settings automatically.
  • LG Optimus LTE II — The latest in the series and the world’s first LTE smartphone with 2 GB RAM.

“Reaching the three million milestone this early in LTE’s global roll-out is a strong sign that customers are on board with our LTE strategy,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company. “Improving the user experience is at the core of LG’s vision and we’ll continue to take leadership in the LTE market by offering features that offer clear customer benefits.”

According to a report by Jefferies & Company, LG is the global leader in LTE patents with ownership of 23 percent of approximately 1,400 LTE patents filed worldwide worth almost USD 8 billion. LG demonstrated the world’s first LTE technology in 2007, developed the world’s first LTE modem chipset in 2008, introduced the world’s fastest LTE technology in 2010 and conducted the world’s first video phone call on a LTE network in 2011.

Now we just need Ofcom to give the go-ahead here for a LTE roll out.

Finally. A 22” tablet!

22tabWe all feel that the 7″ and 10″ have been covered over and over again. Well,  Viewsonic is planning on introducing a 22" Android ICS tablet at the upcoming Computex conference in June. These tablets will be a new breed of “smart business tablet monitors” and they are expected to be running both Android and Windows 8 when introduced. We think a more apt name is Moblet (Monitor Tablet) since these dimensions are reaching monitor size and Viewsonic is well known in that market. No other specs or details are available at this time but from the looks of the picture it appears that the models will have some sort of kick-stand or base to allow them to be propped up when in use.

Sony Xperia U unboxing video

sony-xperia-u Sony have been releasing Xperia handsets with regularity recently and the latest to be made available is there Xperia U that we are looking at here.

The ‘U’ is the smallest of the new Xperia range with ‘only’ a 3.5″ screen. Having said that Sony have still crammed 480×854 pixels in to that relatively small space which gives it a sharp and clear appearance. Colours are strong and even thanks to the LED backlight technology.

The Sony Xperia U is touted as the budget Xperia but it doesn’t really have a bargain price-tag, there’s quite a lot inside that keeps the price fairly high so the ‘budget’ label is rather relative here.

There are perhaps two main bugbears with this handset. The first being that there’s no memory card slot. Whist there is 8GB of internal storage that’s a fixed amount that cannot be expanded and let’s face it, 8GB isn’t huge these days.

Secondly, Sony have chosen to ship the Xperia U, and indeed all of the current Xperia range, with Android 2.3 Gingerbread. This feels a bit ‘old hat’ now and whilst Sony have promised Ice Cream Sandwich soon I suspect that many will be wary of such claims and will remember a similar situation with the X10 and X10 mini being left as 1.6.

Anyway, you can check out my unboxing and demo video below.

Xperia Play loses the support

Bought the Xperia Play? It’s going to stay just as you have it. Unfortunately Sony have announced that achieving a consistent and stable experience with Android 4.0 on the Xperia Play wasn’t something that they could successfully make happen after all their in-house testing. Whilst most of the other phones launched around the same time frame will be receiving an update the Play is is being cast aside into a dark and murky corner beside many of the other devices Sony have discarded. Say ‘Hi’ to the Mylo from us!

"In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY."

"This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones."

"Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY."

The Sony Xperia U is the ideal smartphone if you like your sound crisp and powerful. Orange preparing for the launch of the Intel powered Santa-Clara (Codename)

orange santa

We have known about the Intel powered Santa-Clara for quite a while now but it seems its launch in now imminent. Orange are holding a press event next week for the media to go hands on with the new Android smartphone. Santa-Clara is its codename and the Orange website states that its real name will be revealed at launch.

Pricing is not yet available but if Orange can follow suit with the likes of the San Francisco and Mote Carlo they may be at a real advantage as they were great value for money. The only downside I can see is that it is running Android 2.3 but I expect we will have confirmation on its upgrade to 4.0 at launch.

Specs wise the Santa-Clara is impressive. As well at the Intel processor it sports an 8mp camera that can take ten shots a second, HD video recording, 16gb of onboard storage and all presented on a bright 4.03″ display.

Sounds pretty impressive. Roll on next week.
